Big Toyota recall

Not sure if this has been mentioned on the Forum already, but oof, this is a duzi...But I have to give Toyota props here. When we had a similar issue with our Hyundai with the Theta II engine (metal filings left behind in engine block due to manufacturing error (BTW, WTF!?)), it was gnashing of teeth and tearing of sack cloth to get that "corrected"...

Yep, plenty of 2022 and 2023 Tundra and Lexus LX600 owners are facing long block replacements (warranty). Toyota is doing the right thing. Only around 2,300 LX600s were recalled, but the rest are Tundras.

Fortunately our LX600 is a 2024 model, built in April of this year, and well after the affected engines. The LX600 is the every-where-but-the-US "Land Cruiser" (J300) chassis. For the US market only, for 2024 Toyota downsized and de-contented the Land Cruiser to a mid-range platform, also dropping the price about $30K from the "real" previous Land Cruiser. So the LX600 is an exclusive chassis for the US and the "real" Land Cruiser that the rest of the world gets.

Toyota uses this same 3.4 twin-turbo engine in the new-for-2024 Lexus GX550, as well, but given it was just introduced there are no recalls for that model. The GX550 (which is the Lexus version of the current US Toyota "Land Cruiser") is a joke compared to the LX in terms of quality, fit and finish, and overall chassis competence for off-road.

I'm not a huge fan of the twint 3.4 engine, but it's slowly growing on me. It's not a V-8, but it's actually more powerful than their outgoing V-8. The LX600 is slightly faster 0-60 and quarter mile than the E500E......in a vehicle that is way over 5,000 lbs. Our LX600 is the "F-Sport Handling" version, and is the only LX that has a Torsen differential....

Check these oilpan shots of a failed LX600 engine, at 38,600 miles. Lotta slag.....

FYI - @ace10

This was a major (and very un-Toyota-like) QC fugg-up.

Still, owning it with completely new engine installed as a remedy is really awesome response. Getting it implemented is another matter. Sure wish it applied to 6cyl Taco....

...considering that the Grand Highlander is also prepping for a DS airbag recall as well. Not nearly the numbers as the Tundra alone, but an all-round nightmare - not to mention the terrible PR stain on a respected brand.

My wife bought a 2024 GH and it's been anything but smooth sailing. It started off with only 1 key due to the chip shortage (which battery died within 3 months). Then we found out that they charged us for the roof rack but never installed it (after we purchased a Thule system). I had to reach out to Toyota NA to get them to refund me the cost of the OEM rack after the dealer told me to pound sand (and wanted to install the OEM rack instead). Now the recall. We love the "new" platform as our family grows but this being my first new car experience in 30+ years it's left a lot to be desired.

Just to pile onto Hyundai a bit more...when this happened to us as I said it was a huge fight to begin with, and they flat out refused to replace the whole engine. Only the short block was swapped out. They said they pressure tested the head and it was fine. Ugh...still sticks in my craw...
