chain stretch 3 degrees! Is this still acceptable?

Hello, today I took off the left valve cover on the engine because there was a loud ticking inside the engine. I discovered that one of the oil pipes was broken! At the same time, I checked the chain stretch and the stretch was 4 degrees relative to the left camshafts. Is this still acceptable or do I need to start preparing for a chain replacement? It seems that at least the left chain rails are intact, the right valve cover has not been removed yet! Is it possible to replace the upper chain rails that are inside the sylinder heads , without removing the camshaft? Thank you!

3-4° is acceptable. A new chain will probably not take it back to zero. Most likely you have one or more broken chain rail inside the engine. The M119 chains have very little, if any, "stretch".

The camshafts do not need to be removed to replace the rails, but you do need to disassemble the intake cam adjusters. Search the forum for details and photos, this has been discussed in the past.

The tool may still be available from the Mercedes dealer. The instructions for everything is either in the factory service manual, or on this forum...
