All old-style (pre-facelift) MB logos going back many years were underlined. My 560SEC is underlined, as were my 300SEL 6.3 and 450SEL 6.9.
The earlier style underlines were just metal logos. In the early 1970s as various models changed over, the underlines changed to a black underline (as on the 560SEC and 500E), which was maintained until the model designator changeover for the 1994 model year, when they went to the current "letter before the number" nomenclature.
