Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself as the new and now second owner of WDB1240361C086695, a 1994 E500 that was recently imported from Japan. (Moderator edit: The For Sale listing can be found here.)

I was extremely fortunate to receive every maintenance and inspection document for every year 1994 through 2021. I believe it largely sat after that until it was imported here into the US, as the km did not go up from that point until now. I've only translated a few of these inspection reports so far but they show regular oil changes, coolant changes, and so forth. I'm hopeful by the time I've translated all of them, the result will show a car that was well cared for during its first lengthy period of ownership.

The car is a humble black pearl 199 over anthracite and currently has just over 108,000 km. The interior is 8.5/10. There are two small hairline cracks in the center wood trim, and the glue appears to be coming off the driver door leather where it tucks down in to the cubby. Some of the leather on the back of the steering wheel is fading/delaminating at the stitching. These will all be repaired in time. Otherwise, all switches and devices and things that slide open and close appear to work as they should.

The exterior needs a little more love than the interior, I would probably rate it at 7/10. I'm hopeful a very lengthy paint correction will bring it in line with the interior. There are no dents or dings to speak of, but faded trim and plenty of scratches, mostly in the clear coat, to work out. Tires are Michelin Primacy from 2021 (must have been installed during that last inspection)- which I'll swap out along with refinishing the OE wheels this winter. I haven't figured out the entire mechanical history yet, but thus far all the smoke and fluids have remained in the car, everything is quiet and smooth, and as far as I can tell there is nothing that needs immediate repair. However, we will see what the shop says next week during its first maintenance visit with me. I'm not an auto mechanic, but I am a mechanical contractor, and when things don't work right it will bother me until corrected.

This one is joining a small collection of other cars I own including a 2004 E46 M3 vert, 2002 911 turbo coupe, and a NC Miata track car. Given that I have two kids that will have a more difficult time getting in the back of the M3 and the 911 soon, I think this car slots right into that stable nicely.

I've already learned a ton about the platforms weak spots lurking around the board while researching the purchase, so I figured it was time to introduce myself and the car. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I get to know it in the coming months and years!

:welcome: Welcome from an ex - Michigander. There is a good shop in the 15 mile and Haggerty Road (I think that's West Bloomfield) area with loads of W124 experience by the name of Moterwerks should you need. If this is your first experience with W124 cars be aware there are very few shops that have the experience to work on them properly. The records are a nice bonus as Japan imports generally don't carry them.

When you need parts, refer to this forum for acceptable choices.

@doost.
Welcome! Black is my favorite color. Mine is 040Blk/Blk I’ve owned it since 2004 and plan on keeping it forever.

I wish you the best with your new ride. We look forward to more posts from you. Please start an Owner’s Thread when you can.

Take Csre

"No matter where you go, there you are" applies here. Thank you!

I was able to get into the Japanese maintenance history this weekend with a lot of assistance from Google Lens and ChatGPT. The most recent example of the Shaken Vehicle inspections I was decoding:

If it's got an "X" next to it, that means the part was exchanged or repaired. Unfortunately, there was additional documentation from each of these visits to the Yanase Mercedes dealer that contains more detail on those parts and labor that I do not have, but the compilation of these Shaken reports paints a
picture of a car that was well maintained during its first 30 years of ownership, and driven 2k to 3k miles each year:

I found the upper wiring harness has a 2011 date code, but have not looked into the others yet. This item was not on the Shaken inspection reports, so I imagine other updates have been made along the way, and will confirm soon.

I've put about 50 miles on it so far and found the following:
  • Rear driver window does not go up or down. It was working until it was used a few times this weekend.
  • Interior lights do not come on beyond dome, ash tray, and dashboard. HVAC controls, window switches, etc., are all dark.
  • Headlight wipers do not activate with windshield wiper.
  • There is some air leakage through passenger window or door at highway speeds.
This is a grocery list of repairs I'd expect from a 32-year-old car getting used again after sitting for a few years. Now it's at the shop now getting a full reset on fluids and filters, a more detailed inspection, and a quote on the items in the above list. I suspect there will be a few expensive quotes and invoices coming my way shortly.

HVAC controls, window switches, etc., are all dark: Twiddle the interior light dimmer knob on the instrument cluster, see if there is any change. All the interior lights should dim with the same control. If the cluster lights work but the HVAC / window switches are all dark, something else is amiss.

Headlights wipers only work when headlights are ON, and you activate the headlight WASHERS, then they will cycle breilfy and turn off. They do not run at any other time.

Air leakage: Visually inspect the door gasket from the outside with the door shut. There should be no visible air gaps, the seal should fill the gap between the metal panels. Also check with the door open. If the gasket looks good and is seating properly, it could be the felt channel for the glass. You can test this by applying painter's tape from glass to metal frame all around and test driving. If the noise vanishes, the felt channel needs replacement.

Paying a shop to do this work will add up quickly....

Thanks!

There's definitely something else amiss. I had to rotate that same control several times just to get the dash lights to come on. That now works well, but the rest of the lights remain dark.

Agreed this will get expensive quickly if a shop does 100% of the work. I came up with my list and I'm sure the shop will have their list. Once I have both reconciled with a quote for everything, I'll start picking and choosing which jobs to sub out vs. which to do myself this winter.
