Does anybody know how many 1995 E420 limited Special Editions were produced?

Just curious. If you know, where did you glean that information?

If we could identify one or more option codes that would signify the "Special Edition" in USA... which is not the same as the "Limited" code 958... it should be possibly to figure this out for North American deliveries. Not sure if the same is true for Europe/ROW models, or if those market had the LE's. Someone with full access to the VIN database would need to analyse the datas.

Limited Special edition was codeword for last year make model, 'we gotta use up the spare parts bin'. I'd imagine it's just a shotgun arrangement of codes rather than one.

I can look up production numbers but this may not be as straight forward. I just did some quick research and the "Limited Special edition" is supposed to have 6 hole wheels (649), 10 speaker sound system (810?) and a few more items? I can look up 124.034 with a bundle of SA codes. That should give you a rough estimate.

To my knowledge, there weren't E420 Limited Special Editions available in Europe, AFAIK only in the USA and Canada (but without any SA Code)

From this link:

"The Special Edition models were introduced around April of 1995, so not all 1995 W124 models were Special Editions. The Special Edition package included special metallic paint, special 6 hole alloy wheels, integrated analog cell phone, trunk mounted six-disk CD player, high performance 10 speaker sound system, drivers seat memory, electrically adjustable steering column (no tilt), stainless steel door sills and burl walnut interior trim. On the E320 and E300 diesel the extra cost was $1,295 for the options that were worth about $4,300. The E420 package cost only $495 since it already had burl walnut trim, driver seat memory and the high performance 10 speaker sound system. Paint colors available were Moonstone Grey, Azure Blue, Sapphire Black (exclusive to the Special Edition) and a new color called Brilliant Emerald Green. I think these were the only colors used on the Special Editions.
The official Mercedes Benz of North America position was that the release of the 1995 E Class Special Edition was to celebrate the 10th year of production of the W124 series. I think it was more likely that back in 1995, Mercedes had a tough time moving the W124 E Class since the new W210 E Class was going to be released in the 1996 model year. Lexus had also been taking sales away from Mercedes Benz. I’m sure the real reason for creating the Special Edition model for the 300D, E320 and E420 was to spur sales."

Adam, that's what I thought as well, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for posting the additional information - this matches my understanding as well. Since the 034 already had SoundSystem and burled walnut wood, the primary identifier could be the paint codes, if those paint colors were only offered on the "Special Edition" 034's. I am 99% certain that 009 Sapphire Black was only available on USA 034's on the SE's. Not positive about the other Colors. There may not be a code on the 034 datacard for the S/S door sills. The only other difference would be the paint color and funky wheels.

Note: Previous posts edited to reflect the name as Special Edition, not Limited Edition.

FWIW, the limited edition W201's in 1993 were available in both the black (2.6l) and the green (2.3l). I believe the green was the same as the E420 Special Edition, but Sapphire Black is more of a dark blue than black and was not used on the 190E 2.6l limited edition.

I came up with this. If it's about color then this should give you some rough numbers.
This is specifically production numbers by color for 1995 MY USA E420.

Paint NameCount
Imperial Red (582)10
Garnet Red - Metallic (512)22
Midnight Blue (904)58
Azure Blue Metallic (366)101
Moonstone Grey - Metallic (721)115
Spruce Green - Metallic (249U)130
Sapphire Black (009)215
Brilliant Silver - Metallic (744)276
Brilliant Emerald - Metallic (269)287
Polar White (149)307
Black Pearl - Metallic (199)317
Smoke Silver - Metallic (702)361
Black (040)529

Moderator edit: If the 4 highlight colors were only available on SE's, the total would be 718 SE's out of 2,728 total for USA model year 1995.
