The old M+S rating is nearly meaningless today. This only tells you there are at least 25% void space/notches in the tread.

3PMSF (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake) is the more useful rating for severe winter ice or snow. These generally are made from a softer rubber compound that works well in sub-freezing temps, and may wear quickly in summer temps. Confusingly... all winter tires have the 3PMSF snowflake symbol, but not all tires with the 3PMSF symbol are winter tires.

There's also a shiny new "Ice Grip" symbol indicating better ice traction:
