• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

My ECM got burnt up.. Are they universal fit or 500E specific? Any coding needed? I see a few on ebay but want to know what’s possible.

That is a Base Module (BM). It's not a computer that controls the fuel injection or ignition. No coding needed.

Essentially, it replaces the "OVP" (over-voltage protection) relay of earlier/other (KE injection and HFM injection) models, and incorporates some other functions, including:
  1. Fuse that controls voltage for the stop lamp switch and ABS/ASR control computer
  2. Fuse that controls voltage supply for the CHECK ENGINE light, as well as the EZL and fuel injectors
  3. Fuse that controls voltage supply to air injection relay, fuel pump relay, upshift delay, EGR switchover valve, and cam timing solenoid
It is not universal, but any BM for any V-8 W124 400E/500E/E500/E420 will work. They are cheap to buy either here or on eBay. Just search the FOR SALE ads for a Base Module. They can come with either three or four fuses. If you REALLY need one, I have a few and would be willing to let one go.

Cheers,
Gerry

BM (Base/Basic Module) and GM (General Module) are different names for the same power supply unit, which has other functions as Gerry describes above, plus more.

Anyway, you can use a module from a 400E/E420 and those are very common, and inexpensive since they are rare failures. There are a couple different part numbers for the W124 modules and they are interchangeable. The newer number is 011-545-97-32.

Weird to see one fried like that... wonder what happened?

If you have one that would work, I would definitely like to grab one as long as you don’t ask for an arm or a leg 😬

Previous owner ran the car too long with a bad engine harness... Somewhere along the line, it fried the transistor inside of the box and also melted the diagnostic port...
