Good morning to all fellow W124 owners

I have a very simple question to ask about my W124 E420, as to what possible engine oil I can use and what would be best for the climate I live in. I live in Arizona and the summers are very hot, as my W124 isnt operating at the moment due to me doing a major overhaul and the lower wiring harness being bad, but in the meantime have been doing side jobs on it so its in tip top form when its running again.

I've read a lot of posts on oil you guys recommend on other threads, but I want a specific answer to where im located and what would be best for the hot climates of Arizona, as temperatures reach over 105°. As of my last oil change when my W124 was operable I was using the 5W-40 Genuine motor oil from Mercedes.

Was wondering if there are better alternatives and maybe better options so i can keep the inside of my engine clean and we'll kept, ive seen some people using other oils even higher viscosity oils.

I’m running Castrol High Mileage 20W-50 in all cars for the summer. I change oil every 2000 miles because I like clean oil. There’s a thread here on the forum (pasted below) on engine oil recommendations that would take a week to read. Everyone has an opinion. I don’t think there is any “right” answer. I don’t think you can go wrong with the big-brand names like Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc. I’ll use 10W-40 in the winter.

[Moderators may wish to add this to the epic string on recommended motor oils.]

Been using liquid moly 10w40 in my m104 and 119. High zinc content. Quiet motors.
Semi synthetic but do cha

Liqui moly 10w40 mos2 I use in my 119 and 104. Mobil 5w50 would work great in that climate as well. Both high zinc content, etc

For a warm climate like Arizona, I'd lean towards 10W-40 as a minimum, with optional 15W-40, 15W-50, or 20W-50 (full synthetic preferred, in your favorite flavor).

If you rack up a lot of miles you could possibly change the oil at 7.5-10kmi, if not, maybe change every 5k or so (even if it takes a few years to get 5kmi). A good M119 will consume very little oil between changes.

Remember that the ideal oil level is halfway between Min and Max on the dipstick. Don't fill to MAX. After draining the oil (or suctioning via the dipstick tube), usually 8.0 quarts / 2 gallons will get the level right in the middle where you want it.

Welcome aboard!
