400E Facelift Bumper Cover

For facelift 034 owners, there's a pretty decently priced ($75!) bumper cover out there for you that is made in Taiwan. I figured I would roll the dice and see what this was like, since a large chunk of my right lower bumper cover is... gone. Not there. Missing. So I really have little to lose with this.

My initial impressions are good. It's solidly built, the foam impact strips are there as are the embedded studs and nuts for fastening purposes. Finish is uniform and smooth. I have no way of checking fitment until I replace my existing bumper cover, but it looks right and has all the correct pieces including the tow hook cover and retaining straps. When I get to the point of installing this I'll report back on fitment.

If you have any questions or would like pictures of a particular part of the cover, send me a PM and I'll oblige.

Dan

Dan,

With all of the NLA stuff we are seeing from Mercedes, that bumper cover looks pretty dam good to me. $75.00 is probably "Chump Change" to the cost of the same part from Mercedes. Can't wait for your report back on the installation issues and to see it on your car.

Would the be duplicating the impact strips?

Would they be making the E500E covers?

What else does this guy make for Mercedes?

It came from CarParts.com so I can't expound on what else they might or might not have because I'll be reusing my impact strip and license plate panel, so I didn't look for those.--------- Believe it or not, I've gotten bumper covers from them for other Mercedes, a W140 and a 300E (pre-facelift) and they've all been a great value for the price. Because of size the shipping is almost equal to the cost of the cover, but it's still a bargain.

The manufacturer is a company in Taiwan. I think the name is in the pictures, but if you can't make it out let me know and I'll look it up.

Dan

It will be interesting to see how the impact strip fits into the cover.

Why? Are there issues with them fitting properly? Worst case, I order a new one...I don't recall them being that expensive, like around $100 or so.

Dan

Facelift impact strip 124-885-14-21 appears to be still be available for standard 124 (NLA for 036, front or rear). And yep, ~$100 discounted. Facelift *rear* impact strip is NLA from MB.

I think Gerry was opining that the Taiwan bumper might be of poor fitment and not play nice with an OE impact strip.

:stickpoke:

I bought the same brand front and rear bumper covers a few months ago. They fit well. I didn't buy the front bumper but I do need a few.

Jon, did you buy the bumper assembly, or only the impact strips that snap into the bumper? I remember you bought the rear facelift impact strips (NLA from MB).

I would like to know as well in the event I decide to replace mine.

Thanks!

Understood.

I'm wondering what the deal is with the license plate filler panel. I've neve seen one that seems to fit correctly - they all seem to be a bit "long" in that they're wider than the gap in the bumper strip.

Or is it just me?

Dan

Yeah, all the front filler panels, either blank for US/Japan license plate holders, don't seem to fit well. I don't know why.

Good to know. I just thought it was weird that all of the W124s I've seen in recent years don't seem to have a good fitment with this piece. I didn't think that the ones I've seen were aftermarket...

I went out to the garage to inspect —- it seems to fit ok. 317CAEBA-B298-45E5-BEE9-CE779A67F5DF.jpeg

Darn. Timing is everything. I carefully removed two pristine front & rear bumper covers from that '92 400E I was stripping down 2 years ago. I took the embellishment trim & fasteners. I contemplated keeping the covers, but set them aside. I won't do that again now that everything's going NLA.

I need a storage warehouse like some of you whores have. :)

I just bought the front and rear bumper strips. Someone already scraped my front strip in a parking lot and didn't leave their info. It's good to hoard these strips when they become available.

Can you provide a source? I need the rear Face lift bumper cover. Mine cracked from age and minor parking lot bumps. Thank you!

Jon bought the facelift rear bumper cover for a standard 124, not an E500E.

If you are looking for one that fits an E500E, I don't know of any source, unless the same vendor offers reproductions for those also.

Ah, got it. Do you need the entire bumper, or only the impact strip?
My impact strip was replaced in the last 3-4 years after a minor bump in a parking lot. Just recently another such impact cracked the underlying bumper but the new impact strip seems intact.

Does anyone have experience with mbspecialist.com ? They seem to offer the E420 rear bumper part number
1248802971 minus the bar... not sure what that means.

MB Specialist is in Denmark. If they do have the bumper available, sit down before you read the email with cost of shipping to USA. It's too large to ship UPS/FedEx in USA, and has to ship via freight...

:run:

Are the bumpers and impact strips on the .034 the same as for pedestrian (facelift or pre-facelift) W124 models?
