Aside from the cosmetic differences, does anyone know if a rear bumper from a 1990 300E will fit a facelifted 1995 E420? The dealer confirmed that a bumper for my 1995 E420 is NLA but gave me three numbers that "could fit" my car: 124 880 16 71, 124 880 2971 and 124 880 1740. As far as I can tell the bumper for the 1990 300E is 124 880 16 71. If it does fit, has anyone painted over that style of black bumper strip with any success?

I can't seem to find a usable rear bumper for my 95 E420 anywhere in the southwest, but this bumper from a 1990 300E is available. Thanks.

Jon, yes, it should be 100% bolt on. All the dimensions & mounting points are identical.

Not sure what prep is needed to smooth & paint over the early style impact strip.

I could solve the bumper quest if we were geographically closer. I would have any good shop handle the painting. The rear bumper doesn't take much abuse. A bumper strike will result in damage to any finish. The bumper strips on my car were painted with the car, and with no special product. They are holding up well. Personally, I favor the shorter early bumper strip.

Thank you @gsxr and @sheward ! That's great to know. At least it's something I can use until I can find a decent condition facelifted bumper. I'll definitely paint over the black strip, but IIRC from my old 400E, the bumper strip was made out of material that might be harder to get paint to adhere.
