1995 E420 Smog Air Pump Replacement

It looks like the pulley bearing on my smog pump finally failed right at 260,000 miles. It makes a grinding noise even when unplugged. The EPC shows the six-rib part number 119 140 17 85 (from model year 1993 and up). Looking on eBay for a used pump (not rebuilt) under this part number, all I'm seeing is a Canadian seller (below). The price is right, but I've never purchased a part from Canada and I'm not sure whether it will get held up in customs for weeks. Anyone know if a pump from another M119 will work or whether there are better places to source the pump? I don't really care to buy a rebuilt from C & M at this point, unless I have to.

Jon, assuming you don't want C&M due to the high cost, why not just replace the bearing? Threads linked below.

I've not had any issues buying from Canada. Transit time may be a day or two longer due to customs, but it would be unusual to have something stuck in customs.

The same 6-rib pump is used on all M119's with M119.97x engines, from 1993-95 USA model years (124, 129, 140 chassis).

Thanks Dave. I don’t really want to have the car down for the time it would take to work on replacing the pulley bearing. My other car which is not driven daily also needs pulley bearings so after replacing the pump on my daily-driver I might order the bearing kit and do that when I’m not rushed.

Do you know if part 000 140 34 85 will work?

Jon, that number doesn't exist in the EPC, but if the listing is accurate that it came off a 94-95 SL500 then yes it will fit.

However, $200 for a used pump seems like a big gamble - could have a bearing on the way out, worn internals, etc in addition to the frayed wire insulation. Plan on replacing the rubber hoses, btw - if they are old/original they will be fossilzed.

You can get a C&M reman pump for $365 with warranty:

The Kurth kit is tempting but €500 is painful.

You’re right Dave. I ordered the C&M rebuilt from RM European. Is the supplier for the pulley bearing the German company?
