Could you please post or email a few more pictures (lesliechow at cox dot net) showing wear on the outer edges of the wheel (especially top and 10 & 2)

Thank You

OK. That's a standard 400mm wheel then? If you don't purchase this the OP may have more luck listing it under 400E/E420 parts.

250 plus shipping is a bit optimistic in my opinion. I have the same wheel listed on ebay in nice condition for half of your ask based on many recent sales.

Also would help if the diameter was confirmed, either 400mm or 390mm.

:cheers2:

Picked up a mint wheel for a friend for $80 on fleabay. Just picked up another mint one a week ago for my wagon (with airbag) since the horn contact snapped, for $110.

I have a very nice 390mm Sportline wheel and airbag from a ‘92 car that could be had for $225 plus shipping.

To be sure let’s ask Dave.

Most 1992-93 wheels won't work on 94-up, without drilling/Dremeling an additional hole in the aluminum rear hub. Easy enough to tell though, remove the airbag and take a photo of the insides.

:detective:

yep, contact ring has to come off, too, then drilling. At that rate I rather just find the correct wheel. Going the other direction is cake tho (post to pre).

Sorry if off topic, but when the E500E's were still being manufactured, were Wood and Leather Sportline 390mm wheels an option? I have what appears to be an SL600 Wood/Leather 400mm wheel on Ms. Bornite, it came that way.

I love the look and feel of the wood, and always wondered if the Stock Sportline wheels were ever optioned in Wood/Leather as well. If I could find a good company to take a leather Sport wheel and convert it to Wood/Leather I'd Geet'r done...

For US 500E/E500 cars, only the black leather 390mm wheel was available -- early on in a regular-looking rectangular airbag design, and I believe in the mid-1992 time frame the "triangle airbag" 390mm leather wheel was phased in. This triangle airbag wheel was used until the end of production.

No combo wood/leather wheel was ever offered by MB for the 500E/E500 (or W124) either as stock or as an option. It was used I believe in R129 and W140 models, but in larger 400mm diameter, not the "Sportline" 390mm diameter.

Any 390mm Sportline wheel (whether rectangular or triangular airbag) with leather and wood combination would have been modified after the fact, by an aftermarket company.

There are a couple of companies in the US that do these conversions. The best one I know of, of which there is information on this forum if you search for it, is Craft Customs outside of Dallas. They do great work, but they are not cheap.

I assumed the '92 400E wheel wasn't unique. But... here's my '92 vs OP's '94. Rather than mod the '94, I'll wait and search for a direct replacement '92.

The 94 will work on the 92 easily without much modification, you need only to move to contact ring over from your wheel to the 94wheel (94-95 W124s do not use a contact ring). No drilling, nada. A quick search, there's a ton on here covering this. So you're good, if you're good with the OP's offer.

It's when you go from an older wheel, in terms of W124, a pre 94 wheel and attempt to install it on a 94 or 95. That gets trickier.

For what it's worth, I've dealt with steering wheel swaps on W140 model cars that have the same issues of fitment. I did find that there is a company that makes "Wheelskins", which are leather covers for steering wheels that lace on. They're not cheap, but if you take your time installing them they're nearly imperceptible from the original covering.

Leather Steering Wheel Covers Manufacturer and Distributor

The quality on some of the Wheelskins or wheel wraps I've seen is quite good but the added bulk bothers me. I personally like the feel of a smaller grip. I even find the wood and leather wheels to be too large.

drew

I used a Wheelskin about two decades ago on the very skinny wheel of my 300SEL 6.3. I loved it and it gave a welcomed fatter grip on that wheel. It's all in the installation.

Dan- installing one of those toupee's will get you banned from the 500E board!

This was on a 1995 S500 coupe that youngest son drove. The steering wheel was in such bad shape I was concerned about him driving the car. I tried finding a replacement with no success, so I went with a wheel skins. It took me probably two hours to do it, but it turned out quite nice and was almost imperceptible.

Sometimes you just have to make do.

Dan

As a side note to those buying a used wheel. Do yourself a solid and before you think about installing it, get your hands on whatever leather cleaner you have in the tool box and give it a good thrice over. Not once. Not twice. If there is anything in our cars that hold some of the worst trace of (insert your imagination here), it's the steering wheel.
