FOR SALE FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 85kmi, eBay (Southport, CT)

Re: Anyone know this 1992 500E ?

I think the price is too high ($24k) unless it is absolutely showroom perfect, which it was not as of Mark's inspection in April 2009 (no maintenance records, lower oil pan gasket leak; trans cooler lines leaks; power steering pump line leak; exhaust heat shield needed to be removed; needs new front rotors, front spoiler has scrapes and the wheels have plenty of curb rash.)

The color doesn't help either. While a rare color can command a price premium (i.e., Garnet Red or Pearl Blue)... pearl black (code 199) is the most common color (and most abundant!), and IMO, has no positive effect on the price.

1992 MERCEDES BENZ 500E “EXCELLENT INSIDE AND OUT!!!”

The Classic Car Gallery is proud to offer this iconic 1992 MERCEDES BENZ 500E. In 1992, MERCEDES and PORSCHE briefly entered into a love affair that would produce one very special offspring: the Mercedes-Benz 500E. The car was to become the first of a new generation of cars, the super sedans. Packing a 5.0-liter V8 with an amazing (for the time) 322 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Bolted to a four-speed automatic gearbox, the engine propelles the big four-door to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. PORSCHE was responsible for working the sheet metal of the 500E into the shape you see above. Those healthy fender arches were all massaged into place by the gurus at Porsche before the body was shipped off to Mercedes-Benz for paint and final assembly. Once done, the car was shipped back to Porsche for final inspection. Needless to say, this was an incredibly limited production vehicle, with the two companies only creating around 500 examples per year.

With 84,500 miles, this BLACK PEARL (code# 199) example is in wonderful condition both mechanically and cosmetically. All of her panels are original. The paint is excellent, with deep shine and great luster. The only paintwork (as noted on the Carfax) is the front of the hood, to repair paint chips. She has been enthusiast owned, maintained, and driven. All mechanical systems work as they should. The wheels and tires are in excellent condition, as is the BLACK leather interior. She has all of her original books and some maintenance records. Bid with confidence, as this car is excellent in all ways, and is ready for an enthusiastic new owner!!!

I saw it last week actually for the first time...it's not perfect (as already said) but it is in VERY nice shape IMO for the miles.

I didn't open up the hood or look under the car...but I can if someone not local is interested in more up to date detail. I will be down in that area again in a few weeks; maybe even next week. PM me if I can help out.

Not sure how many records there would be for an 85K mile car...if it was ever serviced at a dealer tho (prolly was early on) ...then those records 'should' show up in a VMI; if it matters to anyone at this point. I personally wouldn't care if there are records. I would do ALL the service right after I got it; so the records would start with me I guess ! The car looks to be obviously pretty well taken care of and it shows in its present condition.

I bought my '02 SL500 from this dealership and had a good experience. The dealer told me that they use Ebay as an advertising tool and that the vast majority of their cars don't hit the reserve but it's a good way to gain exposure. Many independent Porsche dealers do the same thing, so it's not out of the ordinary.

Always good to hear of a positive experience with any selling indy...

I 'might' make it down tomororrow afternoon to see this car again for Eric. Will be early next week if not.

Car must have been nice, granted the color was a git bland and the lack of records worried me but i had planned to drive there yesterday to buy this car but it got sold Friday.

I'm here now , yeah sold BUT another one with 68k is coming in 1
owner, stock.
I wouldn't worry with this place, I trust them.

Price check: Jimbo, any intel on what that car went for? That black on black is one of the sweet "monochromatic" color combos, in my opinion -- just like the silver over ash (or whatever it was back then) and desert silver over tan -- one big, fast vintage Merc blur.

BTW, it's good to see allroaders still out there. Figures it would be CT, as mine stays resident in MI.

Cheers, Gents.

Hey MAW, where are you in MI? I am in Southeast MI (Auburn Hills area)

Hmmm...I'm going to be in Lansing for work in a few months guys.

I spoke to Alan the president at Classic Cars here in CT when I was there, yeah, that 500E sold for close to 20 he said. Same exact car color combo car coming in with less miles but not as good as shape he said. I would check with him thru the website on its ETA; he'd be happy not to have to list any car anywhere. He laughed when I asked if it sold on ebay. 'Our cars are only on there for expsosure' he said.

Their inventory is great, high quality stuff....seems like a honest, genuine car guy too.

Jebus, YES, we've been rockin' this allroad for 8+ years...the darn thing has 193K miles on it now. I love that car !! It actually has it's own garage now attached to the house. What a great car for snow country.
