If anyone with a 92 model is interested in this I have just found a "how to" I copied from the 500Ecstasy days courtesy of "Talbir" complete with part no.s that outlines converting the manual drivers mirror to power which would be necessary here. 93 and 94 models would be a bolt on.

I'd like to replace the rubbers on both of mine. They show some signs of weather.

I will post the material. I need some time as it's copied with a printer and I have no scanner. I just added mirror rubbers to an order from the Classic Center simply because I know the price is going up. I didn't ask the cost since i'm confident Tom will give us a good price and I like dealing with him. I'll post the price when they arrive.

edit: It looks like I paid $102. & $110. in 2010 for a set that went on my 93. I believe those came from Peachparts.

They have become a major BOHICA item, as nearly every late 124 needs to have them replaced. I really wonder if MB is trying to avoid another production run, and they keep jacking up the price in an attempt to control inventory, and simultaneously piss off every customer who needs to buy them.

About 4 years ago, they were significantly cheaper in Europe compared to the USA, and I picked up a couple sets with some other Euro parts from speed-autoteile. At the time they were ~$60/ea USD including shipping (with s/h costs spread across the larger order). Raw price was $42/$44 EUR before shipping and the exchange rate was ~1.25 back then. Now I wish I had bought ten sets, d'oh!

Current USA MSRP = $159 & $165 USD
Current Euro MSRP = $76 & $80 EUR, excluding VAT (est $101 & $108 USD at current 1.35 exchange rate)

http://newsroom.mercedes-benz-classic.com/en/spareparts/?lang=en

That's still a big difference. Wonder why MBNA is hosing us so badly on them. Current USA dealer COST is $95 and $99 USD, btw!!

:scratchchin:

It not unlike the $9 tiny aluminum washer I came across recently at the dealer...some/many MB parts are like wow, that's not bad at all; then there are some parts you go like 'WTF ??! '

Jeez, those pieces are prolly only a buck or 2 (if that) in rubber before the old Slavic lady on the machine squished them out.

OMG !!! I can't stop laughing !!!
On that subject... I have an old Slavic lady staying with me for 49, now 48, days.... Joanna's mother is here. She doesn't speak English, I don't speak Polish and Joanna's at work.

I think I have spent more time on eBay looking up ANYTHING that I remotely have an interest in just to kill time if not myself.
House smells like a damn Polish Deli and she's been here for less than 18 hours.
I've been Googleing "Seppuku" to find the perfect anti-depressant....

A friend in Romania just sent me these photos of those things being made. Man, you were right !!

That guy in the background looks like he wants to squeeze out something besides mirror rubbers.

So the Classic Center just aims to beat parts.com by a buck or two on each price?

What was your shipping cost from the Classic Center? Did they charge you sales tax? if so, how much?

I posted the costs for a general reference to escalating parts prices for the future. I appreciate that many here shop by price and therefore help keep costs down for all of us. There was $20.41 sales tax on the total order of $283.12 plus an additional $8.50 charge for shipping/handling. I don't mind paying a little more for the personal service. You may remember on my previous order the warehouse in Germany shipped mislabeled rotors. Tom quickly rectified the problem and had the correct parts here within a few days along with return shipping tags.

drew

OK so they did charge you sales tax, but the shipping was probably 60-70% of what parts.com would have charged. I think you still would have come out ahead (given that parts.com doesn't charge sales tax) with parts.com, but I understand your point about personal service.

My only beef with that, is that I can (and often do) make my parts orders very late at night after I come in from the shop, as I know what I need and it's on my mind. I can do this 24-7 with parts.com, but would have to wait for business hours with the Classic Center.

Parts.com is very convenient, but if you need a com part you'll need to go a different route. I usually email classic center to check availability and price before I order.

If you thought the 124 door mirror boots were silly priced before, they're downright ludicrous now.

MRSP, Left / Right:

2009 = $104 / $114
2010 = $119 / $130
2011 = $129 / $140
2012 = $158 / $174
2013 = $159 / $165
2014 = $308 / $324 (up 94%)

:blink:

I hear some cursing happening around the US from individuals who have put this purchase off.....

So Roma, tell us .... do the ladies dig new, soft rubber mirror boots?

Holy crap! Makes me feel very lucky for the Gerry-approved soft rubber boots that I just bought at the picknpull for $5 each. They went on my diesel as those were completely gone.

Yikes! I had put this off. It looks like I'll be putting it off again. So what it the new cost for the entire mirror assemblies?

Since you asked... prices below are MSRP:

Left/driver manual (1992) = 124-810-49-16 = $815
Left/driver electric (1993-up) = 124-810-77-16 = $1,040
Right / passenger = 124-810-52-16 = $1,120

In Jan-2010, the complete mirror assemblies were $300-$375 MSRP.

Today, you'll pay almost the same for just the Slavic-squished enviro-friendly "rubber".

:thumbsdown:

Two more years W124 will be truly collector car at least based on parts prices.

I start thinking to keep my 036 inside of house in my room/living room at temperature 75F so that no way these pieces will get hard due to sun or cold.

Looks like it is inventory control since some of the parts are no longer in production.

P.S. I m curious what is the price of 036 fender this year (went up by $300) .... or bumper (?) .... or head light (went up by $200)... euro blinker triple price ($48 to $150)

I checked. They all went up. The headlights are $$$$ now. Fenders too.

:(

On the bright side, 500E engine wiring harnesses all went down in price substantially! No joke.

1992 harness 124-543-95-26 was $950 list, now $605 list, a 37% reduction... $433 at parts.com.

1993-94 harness 124-440-20-06 was $870 list, now $496 list, a 43% reduction... $356 at parts.com.

So there's a tiny bit of good news in among the BOHICA'ing.

:jelmerian2:

Wow! That's good news for anyone needing a new harness. Doesn't make sense to get a used one anymore.

Especially since you can use the late harness on the early cars. Hard to beat ~$375 delivered for brand new. I'm tempted to stock up on a couple, lol. I wish I had done that with the tranny blankets and mirror boots - ugh.

ETA's went up another 10% or so, around $2k list... crazy.

-ETA went up by $150 or (from $1900)

-Bad news for me but good news for the rest, new tranny went down by $600 (from 3200 to 2600) :? However, torque converter went up by $200 or 300 ...

-Brake rotor front (300mm) is cheaper that any Japanese cars $50 a piece. I think I should stay with my 300 mm :cheers1: but rear rotors went up (glad replaced them in Dec 27).

- SA rotors went down a little bit by 5% or so

P.S. I figured out that most of the body parts on W124 , especially those that are popular like lights, blinkers, bumpers, fenders all went up by big % .

:pc1:

I'm thinking for that price I should buy a harness, because some day I'm going to need it. That 93-94 part number is correct for the upper engine harness? I'm on my Mac so I can't look at EPC.

Agree. Time to purchase. Dave, is there any reason I should spend the extra $50.00 for the early harness?

drew

that's a friggin STEAL on the harnesses. If you don't know that your car's has been replaced, you should be tapping out an order to Tom Hanson or parts.com RIGHT NOW.

I sent an email to Woody at Classic. I'm going to buy one for sure because I know for a fact that mine is original.

Since the price difference is not huge, I'd probably get the "correct" harness. On a tight budget, the cheaper one should still work fine on a 92 car.

:seesaw:

Just looked up price of the lower engine wiring harness, parts.com price is now $202.80, which I believe is significantly less than it was in 2013 (maybe Dave or Gerry can confirm old price?)

Just about all of our cars need this replaced (I know mine does), as the upper harness was much more likely to have been replaced because of the driveability issues associated with its deterioration.

Correct on both counts. The lower harness is often overlooked or ignored, as it doesn't often affect driveability. Most all my 500's came with replaced upper harnesses, but old/bad lower harnesses. The one exception is my 92, as omegabenz (the PO) had replaced it already.

Worse yet, the lower harness is 036-specific and no, the 034 (40E/E420) lower harness will not work. The connectors and routing are both different. The price did drop ~10% or so from last year. Guess I should try to pick up a spare...

:spend:

Just quoted $352.16 from Classic for the upper 1993 harness. I'm going to get one.
