BTW, how are these affixed to the underside of the hood? Are these fasteners (I assume some kind of plastic fastener) brittle and known to need replacing with the seal?

Those bulges (7x) on the backside is pressed into matching holes in the bonnet.

The same foam piece is used on all years from start to end of 124 production, and is used on all cars with A/C.

Edit: Although cars without A/C did not have this foam piece from the factory, it can be installed if desired.
