Interested in what other folks have done for Sound Deadening?

Firstly, the 500E is a very quiet car. One of the reasons I love it. However, I was thinking of adding some sound deadening, especially in the trunk.

I have used all sorts of things on different cars (Dynamat, and other generic versions of it), but I am curious what others have done.

I tend to not love spray stuff, and have had good luck with the adhesive "panels" that are cut to fit.

Anyone have any pictures?

I've used Dynamat Xtreme... but it's expensive, kinda heavy, and a PITA to install. Works pretty well though.

I've heard of really insane people using three layers (!), and they claimed the third layer really made a difference (!!!!). I only used a single layer.

Chicks really dig Dyna......yadda yadda....

It can add weight, so if you are drag racing your car, it may take 1-2/10s of a second off your 1/4 mile time.

I have done nothing until now but sometimes the road noise annoyes me a bit, especially in the rain. I have a jaguar XJ serie 3 that is quieter than the E500. Sometimes, I'd like a mix of both....

Dave when you put dynomat on your roof, did you put it between the sunroof casette and the roof or over the casette? Since I have everything apart I may as well do something about it, but I am concerned about running into space issues

I did not have the headliner removed, so I only put it on the sunroof panel itself. I also stuffed some further back where I could get my hands in there, but with Dynamat, you only need ~10% coverage to get a decent reduction in noise, so I didn't go crazy. See photos in post #2, that shows exactly what I did (on my 1987 300D, not the 036's).

Singer employed a technician with private plane sound-deadening experience (aka, Hawker, Gulfstream, Lear).

He used a combo of dynomat, foam, rubber, and batting to get the noise floor just right.

Dave, what would you estimate the overall weight of the dynamat in your car to be? I've flirted with the idea for years but I don't think I could live with myself adding more than, say, 50lbs of dead(ening) weight since I've put so much effort into making my car faster.

Dave I am wondering how much space was there between the roof and the headliner. 1 inch? Less? I'm trying to estimate how much insulation I can place. Thinsulate is kind of thick and may not work if space is very small

Justin, I checked my notes... I used Dynamat Xtreme from the bulk pack, and I used 9 sheets total (4.5 in trunk, 4.5 under rear seat). Total weight for 9 sheets is 20 pounds. I may have also put some inside the doors, I can't remember.

Not nearly as bad as I'd thought. Hell, I'm more than 20lbs overweight myself. Maybe a diet is in order.
