M119 valve cover torque sequence

I'm sorry for asking this obvious for most of you question, but I couldn't find any answers anywhere.
What is the correct torque sequence for valve cover to ensure leak free seal?

I think it should be very similar to the head bolt torquing sequence. OR Start in the middle working out to the ends in an X pattern.

Just my opinion but it’s what I’d do.

I'm leaning towards to "start at the corners" approach due to fact that gasket is not flat there. Hopefully I will get it right first time (after hours of cleaning ATV gunk left by previous "mechanic"

It's probably overkill, but I first torque to 5Nm, then go back over them at 9Nm, then go over a third time at 9Nm.

You will not be able to get a torque wrench on all the bolts if the engine is in the car, on a W124 chassis. Make sure to get the hard-to-access bolts tight enough.

Hello guys,

I'ver the same issue right now. I mounted new AJUSA gaskets under the valve covers and also new copper washers. I'm not pretty sure so I used a very thin film of Hylomar on the half moons on the backside, where the camshaft bearings are. As there is no specific sequence specified in WIS, I startet alternating from back to front. The former gaskets had no leakage at all but I don't have them anymore.
Now the right side seems to be tight but left side has several leakage on the exhaust side :pissed:

I'll try this side once again with oem gasket, no additional sealant and the kriss-kross pattern like the head gasket and report the result.
 
There is not really a sequence required with a valve cover, like there is with cylinder head bolts, or cam bolts. Starting and alternating from the outside inward, or the inside outward, is fine, but technically unnecessary.

What are "AJUSA" valve cover gaskets? Never heard of them. I highly recommend either MB OE gaskets, or Elring if you go aftermarket (which is a key gasket OEM for MB).

Sealant is not specified and should be unnecessary.
 
I've seen AJUSA brand rubber donuts for the junction between upper & lower intake manifold runners, Hecho in Taiwan (link). I haven't seen AJUSA valve cover gaskets for M119 yet, maybe it's a new addition to their catalog, or maybe they aren't offered in USA.

Elring didn't make M119 valve cover gaskets, AFAIK, but now FCP is showing Elrings... made in China. Victor-Reinz also makes M119 valve cover gaskets... in Viet Nam. Link.

Best to stick with OE/Dealer/Genuine, which last I saw were still made in Germany.

119-010-14-30 = Right


At $23/ea from Naperville, these OE gaskets are cheaper than any aftermarket gaskets, at least if you live in USA:

Dave, Didn’t you have an alternate supplier for the valve cover washers?

MB Lorado wants $1.23 ea X 18 = $22.14

UK based owners can get the M6 x 10mm OD x 1mm thick copper washers for a decent price here:

They also do an annual delivery charge of £30 for free delivery on all orders with no minimum spend and next day delivery if the parts are in stock.

I've also used them for oiler tube O rings and multiple cap head fixings plus the small screws that hold the ECU / 38 pin box lid in place.
