Location of the above headlights: Tirana, Albania.
Sold as pair only.

It’s your stuff and you do of course offer it at what you think is appropriate, but in my opinion it will take one VERY dedicated enthusiast to spend 5k Euro on a set of lights, NLA or not. Anyway, good luck with the sale.

This is an option for someone who really needs them and to have a possibility and option here in the 500eboard.
I don’t understand all the comments about the price and not the items itself.
I can put whatever price I want. And actually this is a “I don’t want to sell them price IMHO”
In Germany no one questions someone’s price, period. I have purchased items in Germany and never bargained, I liked them, I bought them, very simple.

Yep, absolutely agree, you can do what you want and it wasn’t my intention to criticize your pricing. I was just saying that it’s all about supply and demand and that the pool of prospective buyers at that price point is likely to be small. They look nice and are NOS and NLA, so there is nothing wrong with them and I hope you find a buyer.

Haven't these lamps / lenses went NLA in the past then came back? Maybe I'm mistaken so correct me if wrong.

If this IS the case them perhaps they will appear back again with another MB production run which would severely hurt any price gougers

This is "I don't want to sell them " price. Or the seller is hoping there a sucker out there willing to spend silly money just to have original E500E lights. He is basing his price on recent asking prices on German Ebay.

I need a set of these lights but when an alternative is usable ( normal W124 lights) at a reasonable price compared to a perceived value due to rarity, I would not buy at this price level. Doesn't stop me driving the car if I use normal W124 lights & 90% of observers would not even notice the difference, unless you enter your in concours.

As JC220 says , maybe MB will do a production run & then the gouging will stop.

As you can gather, I am into driving my cars & not going to concours.

There was a short window in mid-2013 when the Classic Center in the US sold euro headlights (and at a very reasonable price of USD$500 per set) which is when I and a number of members acquired a set. That is the same general period when the "500E" trunk badges were also available for purchase (I should have bought more, could've retired early).

I think that it is likely that items like suspension control arms and headlights will be avaialble again in the future. They are just too important and fundamental not to be available. If not, then the aftermarket will eventually step in to create something.

I do (personally) think that parts hoarding for future speculative purposes is wrong (as in buying up the last 50 trunk badges and then selling them for $500 apiece), but then again it's a free country and people can do what they want.

I do condone buying a spare set of items like headlights or suspension control arms, particularly for long-term owners, as these items do break and wear out eventually.

That said, as stated my set of new MB 124 control arms are certainly for sale to anyone for EUR 5,000. I am also increasing the price of all 500E trunk badges (the repop ones I make from 300E badges) from $50-60 each, to $500 each.

Having dealt in great detail with the folks in Germany over parts related to my former W111/220SEb, I can relate to the "part number is still good but there is nothing in the system" situation. What was explained to my dealer parts guy by a parts person from Germany with me on the call was that they often let stock on older parts drop to "0" before they order more. With the procurement process being what it is, that can cause a 30-90 day window of time before stock is replenished. Under some circumstances they might, but don't definitely do this, make a notation on the part record that it's in procurement and will be replenished. One of the parts I was seeking were rear springs for my car. Good number, still active in Paragon all over the world, "0" stock - everywhere. What they didn't mention was that they were out of stock and had ordered more, which eventually showed up about 45 days later. They were also kind enough to point out a part on the Classic Center search that had an annotation on it stating much the same, that stock was exhausted but more were being procured.

They also explained that in some cases when stock gets exhausted they cut a purchase order to the supplier only to find out they've decided not to make any more of that part. Then they have to go through the whole procurement process to source more, which can take even longer.

They emphasized that if they see a consistent demand over time for a part they'll do whatever they can to continue supplying it. Something else that plays into the decision is how many different models and years it applies to as well, the example being my rear springs, which fit many different models over a decade of production.

Having worked in manufacturing I totally understand their mindset on this, and it's a pretty common one from my experience.

I too run regular Euro lights in the car i drive more. They perform and look fine. I did buy lenses from the Classic Center during the period mentioned but never put them on. It wasn't long after Gerry brought back a bunch of sets for members here.

Hiya Folks,

I picked up an original set of unused original face-lift Euro lamps with indicators included for less than US$2,000 several months ago from a seller in the UK - these are for left hand traffic and are perhaps a little rarer than the more common right hand traffic versions. Mine are slowly deteriorating in the reflectors and replacement is the most viable option. They do come up for sale from time-to-time. I am presently seeking out an LED solution to avert the burning of the reflectors by the conventional globes though.

Regards

Perry

That is awesome, and good to know. Perhaps slightly more realistic than the EUR 5,000. I still want to get EUR 5,000 for my set of late W124 front LCAs, though ;)

It just occurred to me - I have distant relatives in Albania. I wonder if I get a discount for that?

I bought one of the last pairs of left hand traffic E500 headlamp assemblies from MB about 2 years ago. IIRC they cost about £350 for the pair of complete correct 036 headlamps :choochoo:

Can they be de-sulfated and electrically maintained so as to triple their usable life?

How so? I: 1) don't own any left-hand-traffic headlamps to test; and 2) don't own a desulfator/maintainer (as I expect that 95+% of the members of this forum do not).

Dan, I also want MB reproduction of Euro 036 headlights so we don’t have to worry about NLA items as headlights are a major safety issue and not only for looks. Like I mentioned before this price as they say in English “I don’t want to sell them” price.
I have had them for 4-5 years only taken out twice for photos and very worried not dropping them 😂

Hiya Folks,

I have found the best way to preserve the reflectors is to alter the bulbs to LED and reduce the heat that causes the damage. I have found a replacement for the H7 but have been struggling with the H3 main beam. The biggest challenge is finding a globe which has a compact heat sink so that it can fit into the housing - any suggestions?

Cheers

Perry

LED's have their own challenges... @Jlaa experimented with them, and eventually returned to halogens, IIRC? He had a detailed thread on this.

I assume you mean H4 main lamp, and H3 for the auxiliary high beams, as there was no H7 used on the 124 chassis lamps.

I've also not encountered any issues with bulb heat in the Euro headlamp assemblies, even with overwattage bulbs (100/90w H4, 100w H3) and relays / heavy gauge wire. The light output is fantastic with this setup, but no heat problems at all. Has anyone experienced heat-related failures on the Euro-spec lights with H4/H3 bulbs?

Yeah. The beam pattern of LEDs bulbs just suck, regardless if they throw out more lumens. Reason is because the individual LED chips throw off light in a geometry that is totally not the same as the geometry of a hot glowing tungsten filament ..... and the reflectors are not made to cope with that. I went back to halogens after playing around with LED "bulbs...."

I recently bought a brand new set of UK suited (RH drive position, LH dipping) headlamp assemblies for £2000. I think I got a bargain!

You sure did -- almost the equivalent of the USD $35 used 500E trunk emblem that @captruff scored recently!! The seller for your lamps probably didn't know he walked away from EUR 2,500 !!! :woohoo:
