I ordered this Ate Plastilube from AutohausAZ. The description stated:

Noted uses include brake assembly lubricant, caliper slides and other moving parts such as seat rails, chains, sliding roof guides, hinges, and gears.

Has anyone actually used this to lube the sliding roof guides?

That stuff is more expensive by weight than silver. Do you know of anyone that sells it in less than the 50 gallon drum?

It comes in the same size tub as any wheel bearing grease does. It's not nearly as big as some here (...ahemgsxrahem....) would have you believe. It's not horribly expensive either. Just get the Gleit & be done with it.

There are substitutes that work well, and are just as good as the Gleitpaste. Personally, I have always used the white Lubriplate grease #1200-2, which is available in small cans.

I think I'll look for this. $60 is way too much for lube.

You can also get a garage door lube at ace which has some similar attributes. Never tried it as I have a can of paste for 15 years...

Plastilube looks interesting. Got a part number for it from AHAZ?

:apl:

Gleitpaste from Dave Kent looks like a good idea. I have sent some from my "50 gallon drum" to a couple of folks here on the board, gratis including me paying for postage.

Part No. 1161688

$8.85 from AutohausAZ

According to Kent's video, the felt feet are no longer available from MB. I don't know if it's changed since he made his video. He mentioned that they were looking to outsource the part themselves.

THanks for the part number! :)

For the felt pieces... you mean for the 124 sunroof? This is the first I've heard of them being NLA. I would inquire with your favorite MB dealership as to availability (remember, a price showing at parts.com does NOT mean the part is available).

Thanks, Dave. I'll check those part numbers with the dealer. Gerry, I didn't know Meyle parts were that bad. I guess I can put them in the same category as Uro?

I have one sunroof that doesn't work too well. I'm trying to decide whether to take a chance and open it up, hoping it's just lubrication, because I park it outside.

With Meyle, caveat emptor. Better than URO, but if an aftermarket part from the "top" list is available, or the factory part is available for reasonable cost, it's highly advisable to go with those over a Meyle.

Thanks for the information, Gerry. It's getting harder to tell what is quality and what is not, as most suppliers have gravitated to the Asian and Indian slave labor markets to increase their profits. There seems to be no pride anymore in quality -- just profitability.

Ah, it was Mahle that I was thinking of -- not Meyle. The Mahle is generally good. I think I've used their oil filters before.

I have had only good results with this Lubriplate product. The temperature and pressure characteristics are similar to the OEM spec. :-D

Thanks. I think that's what another member here recommended a few years back. I'll check it out. Maybe it is useful for other things on the car too.

My mechanic shop in Portland has used Lubriplate for many years on sunroofs, etc. with great success. They gave me a can many years ago and I've used it for sunroofs, etc. as well ... at least until I got my own drum of original MB Gleitpaste last year. The stuff that Benzworld people tell you is only available in "huge drums" and only to dealers and independent shops.

Lubiplate is readily available. I get it from Napa. 1# cans or you can get it even in grease gun size tubes. I had a friend that ONLY used it for wheel bearings and greasing suspension. He said on suspension, you had to do several grease services to push out the old stuff as it didn't mix and things could get sticky.
Wurth sells a tube also and I found that ace hardware had a similar lubricant for garage doors. Non-staining, stays put and doesn't attract dirt... hum... that said- I have a can of Gleitpaste.

Just for reference on this, all of the felt sliding pads are available from MB as of present, EXCEPT the 140-782-01-38 pad, which has been NLA for the past year or two. However, it is not one that often requires replacement.

The pad 124 782 00 30 is definitely avaialble again from MB.

I would recommend that all 124 and 126 owners here on the forum get a full set of pads to have on hand as spares, if and when a sunroof service is ever needed.

Nice to hear 124-782-00-30 is available again... note that the supplier changed, indicated by the -64 suffix on the currently-available part, 124-782-00-30-64.

Spendy at $26/ea MSRP, $20/ea Napsterville, 4 req'd... adding up the cost of the felts almost makes you consider buying the entire new lift arm which includes all that stuff, and has 30 years less wear on the bearings/pivots which are not repairable.
