Hi,
Is there a resource that would detail the production of the 1994 model year? Specifically, of the 374 sent to the USA, how many were Silver Exterior with Black Interior?

I think Gerry casually mentioned that Silver is actually a fairly common color. Maybe not as common as black pearl, but certainly more plentiful then white or green. The funny thing is I've only seen maybe a dozen brilliant silver 500's over the years and that's all years not just '94.

Mine is brilliant silver but with gray interior... dunno if Gerry has full data on the various color combos, but I'm sure he has a fair amount.

I'm not talking.
But I will say that Brilliant and smoke silver (together) are the second most common color behind the gray-blue metallic cars. Brilliant silver being more common.

Thanks, guys. But is there data out there that lists what came into the US in 1994 Just curious to see what color combo's, from the common to the rare, came over. And, how many 94's do you think are still surviving here?

Spruce Green cars are more common than many people think, believe it or not. They are in the "top half" of the most common color cars that came into the US market. There are a number of far more rare colors, such as arctic white, bornite, nautical blue, pearl blue metallic (i.e. the RENNtech 6.0L 6-speed car), pajett red, and especially the ultimate (not just holy, that's too pedestrian) grail: the 040 "quintuple black" cars.

Gerry, just curious, do you mean to say the rarity specifically for the .036, or for the W124 in general? Based on simple observations (no data to back it up), for the E500E.... 199 Pearl Black seems to be by far the most populous, perhaps followed by 744 Briliant Silver in second place. Maybe Smoke Silver and Spruce Green are next in line, and the rest get into really rare territory (blues, reds, whites, etc).
Do you have any data from your collection that shows (for USA, and worldwide) the E500E color percentages? In the USA, it seems to me like:
Pearl Black = 50%
Brilliant Silver = 35%
Everything else combined = 15%
That could be all wrong, and probably is, lol. Does your registry include the exterior & interior color codes based on the datacards? That would be SWEET.

I am talking for the 036 Image. I couldn't give a crap about non-.03X W124s. Especially Diesel versions of the W124.
Gray-blue metallic (DB 199 color code) is indeed the most popular color for US-market cars, with more than 50% imported being that color (though as you know some had black and some had gray leather interiors).
I once posted a thread on Scott's site with the percentages and yes, they roughly correspond to what you say - 199, than brilliant silver, then other colors. It's on Scott's site.
Now, yes all individual car data I have has interior and exterior color codes.

Most popular for MBNA to import, anyway... I believe MBNA felt it was their duty to tell customers what they wanted, rather than let customers decide for themselves. For some reason, MBNA thought Pearl Black was the best color. I personally would have preferred a little more variety in the .036's that were sent over to the USA! I wonder if the rest of the world also got the same "50% pearl black" allocation.

This is 100% correct - there was (and is?) a team of "marketing experts" at MBUSA who pre-decided and pre-ordered the colors and feature-load for US-market cars. That is why the consistency of the option load, and paint/upholstery availability, is so limited/narrow. It's totally unlike most of the rest of the world, where customers can order exactly the options that they want.
MBUSA does this for two reasons - to reinforce the US marketing perception of MBs as "luxury" cars that are fully loaded, and also to pad their profit margins with lots of costly extras.

In 1992, I actually set foot into a Mercedes Benz dealership to inquire about the 500E. I was told that because the 500E was to be a fully loaded vehicle with every available option, they were only offered in metallic paint. Later, in 1994 I came very close to purchasing a 1994 silver/black car when I was told of a low mileage 1993 500E in black/black. I almost dismissed the 1993 car without going to see it as I assumed it was Pearl Black, not that I dislike the Pearl Black, but I do prefer Silver to Pearl Black. I was very surprised when I saw the car was 040 Black. I have been since told by several "old school" sales representatives that 500Es could in fact be ordered in flat colors which makes sense to me.

Gerry, my recollection of the numbers you posted on Scott's site is that all silver cars are lumped together. Do you havy any figures for the different silver hues independent of each other?

- one in Boston
- one recently sold in VA (craigslist)
- one in NV
I have noticed from my own shopping experience that majority are 199 blue-black as everyone have commented. Does anyone know how many are 040 black? Hatch had one that they sold last year. I would be also very curious to find out how many of each color were imported to US (if there is data on this).
