Beautiful girl!!!

A few photos of my rig from last Saturday's Houston Coffee & Cars ....

You should have seen the chicks crowding around when one of them spotted the retrofitted trunk light switch !!

Re: 1994 E500 Emission Results (cumulative)

You're car looks fantastic, Gerry! I'm sure the NOS bottle brings added interest at shows. Love those wheels. Need one of those trunk switches... I'm not getting any younger.

I think they were more impressed with the brand new air intake hoses...

Great looking car, Gerry. Also good of you to finally get her out of garage again!

Gerry, you need to replace that yellow coolant tank, man...Lol! They're not getting cheaper.

I have one of those strut brace laying around in the garage in zurich still. I might pick it up this summer and sell it to Jelmer. Can't remember the brand but I think it begins with a "W" ?? Would it not sit/fit better if you cut out the rubber trim above the firewalls??

Looking sweet though!

Actually the coolant tank is one of the next things on my list to do. I just did my coolant tank in the SEC last year, so you are very right. Yes, that's a "Wiechers" bar. I didn't want to cut the trim piece, so I just bent it. Something to consider though.

This was a one-hour detail job with quick detailer and wheel cleaner, and some dressing on the engine. So not an extensive detailing by any means. I had to get up at 6AM to do it before I drove down to the show.

The air intake hoses, like the coolant tank, really do dress things up underhood. Worthy purchases !!

Here's the new coolant tank in the SEC engine compartment....

Awesome, I have the coolant tank here waiting to be installed, too, together with the low-water sender and the t-stat. If you get around to it, I'd really appreciate a nice step-by-step, possibly with part numbers!

So far I have:
Expansion tank = 124-500-15-49 € 76,30
Level sender = 124-540-02-44 € 28,28
Radiator cap = 124-500-04-06 € 7,64
Windshield t-stat = 126-830-07-84 € 14,09
termostat O-ring = 140-997-06-45 <-- 2x € 1,63 (p.st)
radiator hose: 124-501-92-82 €21,58

Windshield t-stat = 126-830-07-84 € 14,09
termostat O-ring = 140-997-06-45 <-- 2x € 1,63 (p.st)
radiator hose: 124-501-92-82 €21,58

Is the windshield t-stat leaking? Meaning are you getting some coolant mixing with the screenwash? This rarely fails.

.

Gerry, on this note, is the SLS reservoir worth changing too? Haven't seen what a new one looks like but if it's white then it should match all the other white tanks. :banana2:I'm thinking about this.

The t-stat inside the washer bottle is more of a medium failure rather than rare. I've had to replace this on at least 3 different W124's in my family due to coolant leaking into the washer bottle. Sometimes it just needs new O-rings, other times the t-stat is cracked and must be replaced, as shown below.

SLS tanks are cheap enough that it's easier to replace them than to try and clean an old one. The new ones come with the lid, filter, dipstick, etc. Under $50 USD last time I checked? Make sure you get new hose too, the old stuff generally gets ruined during removal.

:banana1:

Maybe split this stuff off of this thread into a new thread called something like "Little replacements for under the hood" and make it a general topic? If the SLS reservoir is cheap and easy to replace, I want to do that as well.

And it wasn't leaking, it just didn't get warm anymore inside the wiper reservoir. Had something todo with the duovalve, we learned afterwards. Oh well.

Gerry,
We operate much the same way here in NC. I drive the stock 93' 500E as a daily driver and the 92' Renntech 500E at least once every two weeks.
I bought a 2001 SL500 for my wife's 45th birthday that is a garage queen with 54k on the odometer.
For the family, the 2000 Chevy 3500 van is the people hauler with 15 seats. (We have six kids.)
I am so thankful that this site is here! I am learning soooo much.

Thanks !

I have a set of proper Euro lights waiting for me already in Germany, and the chromed wheels will come off in favor or a set of "regular" wheels or something else that is tasteful and proper for the car. Otherwise, not much to do on it....

Hi Gvz, Looks like a proper example, congrads... though I am not a fan of those US bumpers.

Nice car! You have a very nice collection :) Where do you store all these? Do you have such a big garage at home?

Also: this car demands you hire a driver, and you don a hat, a cigar and sit in the rear, reading your paper ;-))

Why another pearl black car?
Doesn't look too bad on a 126, and I don't come across SELs this nice every day...there is another one locally for sale here in Houston that's sort of a dark blood red (not pajettrot/cabarnet red) with palomino interior. I prefer dark exterior colors though. And this one has tinted windows to preserve the interior.

So which one will be your daily driver now? So many cars; so little time! I'm sure the price of fuel must enter the picture sometime.

Well, one can only drive one car at a time, so fuel costs shouldn't be any more than they already are. The SEC will probably continue to be my daily driver, because it has more than 200K miles on it and I want to get it up above 300K !

I feel the same way about the 1993 500E. It already has 185k on the odometer and has become the daily driver (20.3mpg) highway; thus keeping the miles off the 92' Renntech.
Your new car is gorgeous. I just don't know anything about the 126. How does it ride/handle compared to the 500E on I-45? Would you rather take the 560 or the 500E on a long trip?
We have taken the 500E into the mountains and it is a pleasure to drive up and down the inclines. You can set the cruise control and it never misses a beat.
My in-laws have a NEW E350 (2011) and there are so many gears that it seems to "search" for the most economical setting on any kind of incline.

There's a white albatross missing from the photo as well. Don't tell me the wagon has to sit... sit... OUTSIDE! In the Texas heat and sun? OH, the horror!

A group of real Mercedes Benzes

where's the SEL ?

Great looking stable!

Indeed! Poper old skool. You now have a complete set of 560s, congrats!

Nice one Gerry, what a long driveway you have by the way. What was the squeaking sound in the background?

Great video...very tasteful Benz collection indeed! What do your neighbors think ;)

Just came across this photo, of me with my 1984 VW Rabbit (Golf I) GTI. This car was fully Neuspeed and Techtonics-enabled, bored to 2.0 liters from the stock 1.8.

This was a self-portrait that I did for a summer photography class at University. It would have been taken outside of my apartment in Corvallis, Oregon in July of 1989, so I was 21 years old there. Sorry for the crappy scan; the photo is also underexposed.

The car had fully tinted windows and you can see the wide rear-view mirror (quite fashionable at the time)....

By the way, I did replace my coolant expansion tank some months ago this year...it's now nice and snow-white :)

Re-adding some photos of my E500, since the original links from my initial "PWNER" post are now off-line. These photos were taken circa 2005, so quite some time ago....

The iPod installation is old; that was a first-gen iPod with a cassette adapter. Not long after these photos were taken, I installed a cable that plugs into the back of the head-unit where the CD changer goes. I am using a 5th-Generation 160GB iPod for the past 6-7 years now...

Cheers,
Gerry

I took my 560SEC in to get emissions & safety inspected -- an annual necessity in the Republic of Texas.:Texas:

The inspector told me when he saw the car's insurance certificate that it would be the last emissions inspection ($40) that the car would need. "From here on out, it's safety inspections only!" ($13 annually).

He also said, when the tests were over, "Man, that's one heck of a clean-burning car! Those numbers are really quite good!" When I told him that the cats were original (206,000 miles) he was impressed. He then told me "You ought to take those cats off now and run straight pipes, and recycle them old-school cats at a metal recycler! The platinum in those things is worth some big bucks!"

Lastly he complimented me on the condition of the SEC. "Really a beautiful car! You just ever see them like that anymore."

I updated my emissions results table earlier in this thread, posted here.

As you can see, a couple of measurements were slightly ahead of recent years, but certainly still in overall excellent condition.

Cheers,
Gerry

Commuted to work in my E500 a couple of days this week. Took these at a Shell station adjacent to my office (at the corner of SH 249 and Louetta Rd, Houston), right after work on Tuesday.

Jimbonian(TM) headlight wiper airflow panels installed.

Cheers,
Gerry

Pretty!

That grille looks very nice, but sometimes at a quick glance it looks like a W140
