Questions about the G-Wagen

This mostly aimed at Gerry who I just found out has one, but I have some questions about the Gelandewagen. Now that I have a summer car, my trusty '08 Acura TL has been demoted to winter car, but it's white, a sports sedan, and FWD: if I'm to have a purely-winter only car, makes sense to get an SUV. And that SUV might as well also have a three-pointed star on it. Been eyeing the upcoming GLB, what some call the "Baby G-Wagen" but I'm also tempted by the real thing.

1. Is it ever annoying to drive a status symbol of a car that rappers, reality show housewives, etc., use?
2. Which model year(s) of the 463 are the ones to have? Which motor?
3. Despite how far it's come, does it still ride like the 1970s military vehicle it is?

Thanks in advance. As a thank you, have a picture of a Canadian Army LUVW (Light Utility Wheeled Vehicle) on a life-fire training range:

G wagen ownership is EXACTLY like owning a boat. The two best days are the day you bring it home, and then the day you sell it.

We had a '13 G550 for about 4.5 or 5 years from new.

Does it attract attention? Yes. But around here they're not all that rare. Typically see one or two per week. I absolutely believe that the average person thinks the typical G wagen driver is a douche. :hammerhead:

What's it like to drive? Steering is vague. Incredibly susceptible to cross winds. Requires fiddling with the wheel on the highway like an old fashioned piece of American iron. Turning radius similar to a cruise ship. 3 point turns become 5 point turns.
Unstoppable. I'd rate it comparable to an 80-Series Land Cruiser.
With all the flat glass, car headlight reflections will play games with your head, until such time as your brain learns to sort-of interpret the information and basically disregard the sensory overload. This was a serious problem for me.
Overall driving comfort was pretty good. Front seats do not adjust all that far back. Leather wore like iron(in a good way). Not even a minor crease after 5 yrs.
Accessing the cargo area sucks. The rear door is heavy and side hinged. And be very, very careful with the roller shade cargo cover. It's a fragile, archaic bit of kit which will set you back $1K for a new one.
Tumbling the second row forward is a truly miserable task. Don't think the G wagen has the utility of a similar sized SUV. It does not. I cannot overstate how much effort is required to enlarge the cargo area floor. And even then, it's barely worth it.
Cycling the door locks is awesome. Like the angriest bolt action rifle you've ever heard.
The M273 motor is a beast. Sounds absolutely wonderful. Produces more power than a shipping container on wheels should ever have. 5.5 seconds to 60 is downright scary. Will spin all four wheels. I can't see any point to the G6X versions. With the 550, you get 80-90% of the performance of the AMGs, for 2/3rs or half the price.
The front windshield is a $3-4K affair. And it's flat. They get broken. I used racing-style tear offs sourced from a shop in Southern VA. Managed to survive with only a couple of small bullseye chips.

Our specific example (2013) became an absolute nightmare toward the end of the warranty period. Windows lowering themselves. COMAND turning itself on after the car was locked. Vehicle/engine not shutting off after the key was removed (no Keyless go).
It was surprisingly gentle on tires. And nothing mechanical failed in 5 yrs/30K miles.
We bought ours for my wife, but she basically stopped driving it after about a year. She was that bored with it. I found myself taking it for groceries because it has sat for weeks on end.
When MB announced the new motor lineup a couple years back, the older ones shot back up in value. My selling dealer made a very strong offer to buy it for his inventory, and I couldn't throw the keys at him any quicker. He added $10K on top of what he paid me, and sold it within a week.

Did I mention that they're unstoppable?

I know that @600Eric and @8899 both daily-drive G-wagens. They should also be able to provide some commentary.

My G-wagen has an M104 engine. Yes, the same old, boring M104 that is used in the E320 sedans, wagons, cabriolets and coupes. It's boring, only 210 HP, hard to get power out of unless you rev it to hell, but it's also reliable as hell, bulletproof as hell, and if anything goes wrong with it, I can fix it because I've torn one apart before.

Totally agree on the electric door locks. That throaty "Zoop!" sound rocks -- sort of like a faster version of cocking my AK-47 before letting loose with a 30-round burst.

Mine doesn't have the roller shade cargo cover, nor a sunroof. Thank Goodness for not having both !! Mine's great for tooling around town.

It's a 12-18 month wait in line to get a G-wagen at the local Annapolis stealership. I will not do business with this stealership (other than the parts department). They can't keep used ones in stock, and don't even have a stealership demo model. I'm being told that many stealerships around the country are marking new G-wagens up by $50-70K above MSRP, and people are willingly paying that.

G-wagen parts availability is excellent, even for mine, simply because they have changed so little over the years. Sure the interiors have changed, and computers now control the diff locks and such. But the actual mechanisms and mechanicals have changed very little, and thus parts are available. I did find that one or two of the fuel lines for my specific model are NLA, but I was able to get new ones made by a local hose shop and/or adapt pedestrian 124 hoses as needed, so it was not a problem.

Engine parts are as with other HFM M104s -- generally available on the aftermarket or through stealers if required.

There's a number of G-wagens tooling around Annapolis. But it's Annapolis......

I have a 1999 Model G500 with new model AMG wheels, front grill and other bits.

1. Is it ever annoying to drive a status symbol of a car that rappers, reality show housewives, etc., use?

It can be, people always stop and want to chat... but really i get similar attention with any of the classic cars I own.
Infact, I find it weird when im driving a normal car and people dont look and point.

The G wagen is pretty common now with them being so popular now.

I dont know what sort of age you are looking at but you get of this with older models.

2. Which model year(s) of the 463 are the ones to have? Which motor?

I went out specifically looking for the model before they used the W203 C Class interior which feels very cheap to me. So for me it would be up to 2000 model or the very latesrt models. The G wagens from 2000-2014ish felt extremely cheap and nasty inside to me.

Motor - for me it had to be the 500. The AMG models seem to be quite abused. So one of the V8 petrols, then depends on condition.

3. Despite how far it's come, does it still ride like the 1970s military vehicle it is?

I like the ride. Steering is not precise but feels confident and the car feels solid.
Much better than an ML or other 4x4 I have driven.
The petrol models are so nice and smooth.
I guess being in USA you wont see many diesels.

I love my G and so do the family. I have fitted the rear seat benches so 9 of us are often out in it!

I suppose so. I just try to be a courteous driver and keep on truckin'

2. Which model year(s) of the 463 are the ones to have? Which motor?

If you want one with a v-8 engine, then I really would not recommend anything older than a 2005 G500/G55. In 2007 the G500 did away with the 722.6 transmission for the 7 speed version. So probably best to avoid the MY 2007 G500. In 2009 M-B cut the M113 engine for the G500 and hence introduced the G550. So probably best to avoid the MY 2009 G550.

The G55 retained the M113 + 722.6 all the way up to MY 2011.

I think the ride is fine. Yes, the steering is not so precise, but you get used to it.

Braking - mine seems to stop fairly well, at the cost of some serious brake dust build-up on the front wheels
Sunroof - glad mine has it. It's great on hot sunny days when parked....leave the G with the sunroof open with the doors locked to vent the hot air build-up.

I picked up my 2008 G55 two years ago with about 108k miles. Did a bunch of base-line maintenance (plugs, fluids, motor mounts, tran mount, etc.) at the time. And since then it has been [knock-on-wood] an extremely reliable and trouble-free vehicle.

Expect a lot of Rust! Even newer G... a never ending Story of them! If you google it, you will never spend that money and buy a G

One other quick thought... on our G, I used the 18" OE wheels for winter duty and then purchased a set of G63 take-offs for 3 season driving. Those wheels were 20" and wore 275/50 Yoko street tires. The ride suffered from the shorty sidewall. Given a do-over, I would have gotten the 19"ers from the earlier G55 with their less agressive Pirelli rubber and taller sidewall.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. All things considered, perhaps one vintage Merc in the garage is enough: I'll get the new GLB when it comes out - they're about the same price anyway.

I'm using the stock ATIK 16" wheels that came with my G-wagen. They are HIGHLY in demand used.

I have more sidewall than I know what to do with !!

My car came with those 16" wheels... When i put them up for sale, I couldn believe people wanted to pay MORE than the 18" originals I wanted to replace them with!

Indeed. They are most in demand among the folks who actually take their G-wagens off road from time to time !
