Hello, my name is Rado and I’m 34.
This is my childhood dream and my marriage challenger, the 1994 MB E500 with 145k miles.

My wolf is a keeper and, as I think about it now, a gift at my son’s wedding, btw he’s 6yo now and my wife jokes that I might be just about done restoring it by then. I passed on a 1993 500E as I knew that E500 is the only one I want. Funny enough the guy was selling the 93 500E because he was mad that he’s son is not interested in it and he was studying in NY and will do public transport only :D
I hope I won’t get there.

It’s a marriage challenge as I do spend quite some time diagnosing it’s issues since it has a few and reading all the forums around just to find out that the thing I was reading was for a pre face lift or whatever… the challenge is also that I have a E500 and not a 500E, just try googling e500 and you don’t get the w124 chassis, some of you might feel the pain.

Yes I search by 500E and have to make sure it’s for the later models 😅

I do get projects once in a while, the light ones, and get bored as I finish them. Working on cars lightly helps me relax from work, stress relief. My goal with the wolf is not to be done with it in a month or so as I’m afraid of losing interest in it.

I have a 2 car garage and had to sell my other cars to keep the wife happy. We live in Vegas so parking in the garage is a must during the summer time, now I need a proper 3rd car that I can driver around and park it outside 😅

It’s funny how it’s been out in the sun for over 15 years and now only garaged. One man’s trash another man’s treasure I guess.

About the car, 199 black pearl color with some shade of gray bottom part, cream interior and all stock.

About the previous owner, I say owner since he had it since 1995, so we’ll just forget about that first one who paid msrp. The guy is Japanese and he said this car was taking space in front of his garage for too long. It was posted on auto trader by owner with just a few pics, made an offer sight unseen and he took it, I flew to make sure it’s real and we shake hands. I later shipped it to Las Vegas.

The good things is that it’s a California car with no rust, clean title and no reported accidents. No check engine light. It was a solid start and the goods ended there. Top engine harness replace in 2004, the lower one goes in the bad section.

The bad, I mean not the worst but things that I have to work on. Lower engine harness is leaving the chat, when washing the car the oil pressure is all over. 2 minor mishaps, not sure how to classify them, rear trunk had a dent or something and the guy repaired it by himself, it looks awful, we’ll deal with it on the final stages of repair. And the 2nd he was saying about drivers door dent or something, but this time it was better fixed.

We’ll just skip the burned hood and top as it is obvious, and we’ll add the dry interior with ripped driver seat and somehow stained rear left seat. And don’t forget about sagging headliner.

The good or the bad I’m not sure how to put it is the missing maintenance history, which later I realized it was not only missing from the car history but also from car itself. Truly bone stock and untouched piece of history.

My goal is to first restore it, give it the service it’s been missing for the past all years. Then gently slightly upgrade, like the monoblocks 2, bigger brakes, recaro classic seats, paint the bottom half to match the whole car color, I’m not into the 2 tone.

Know issues which I most tackle already: All vacuum hoses and fittings, all oilers, both valve cover gaskets, chain guides, oil pan gasket, spark plugs, washer tank and many small things.

ABS and ASR lights are on, made my flasher tool to see the codes and I found that my light will stay always on on abs module, found a burned fuse, after replacing it I managed to read codes. Not surprised I found wheel speed sensors are the issue, I cleaned driver side one and when I went to passenger side the bolt just crumpled, need to extract it somehow and then move to the rear one, after checking the codes again - the driver side sensor was not throwing the code anymore.

All filters, the cabin dusters were good to grow potatoes in them. The suspension is surprisingly not that bad the tie rods are gooooone, ordered new genuine for Mercedes SL with the part numbers I found here on the forum. Ordering parts from FCP, eBay, pelican, autohouseAZ and many other sources.

I’m working in steps:

Step 1 - repairs
Step 2 - service
Step 3 - upgrades
Step 4 - interior
Step 5 - exterior

If any of you restored this car before, let me know some insights please, I go by common sense here and it pains me to see the ugly in it until we reach the last step. I’ll throw some pics and add more info as we go.

Thanks for having me and I’m enjoying the support already.

I bought mine about when you were born, Rado. They can be "keepers."
It’s overwhelming when I look realistically how much do I need to do to make it like new.
The idea of selling it and cleaning up half of the garage does not leave me. It all changes when I drive it for a day :) then I decide to put it on pause and get back to it later.

I've had one for 20 years. Same great addiction.
*removes shoes, counts beyond ten*

Me too! I totally missed the "China Anniversary" (20 years). Turns out I bought my silver E500 from Shantá in May 2004. I hadn't realized it was that long ago. Also missed Brass (21), but can celebrate Copper (22) in May 2026, lol...

:oldster:

@Rado,
Keep it. Most members that have sold their’s have regretted doing so. I purchased mine In October of 2004 and haven’t regretted it to this day. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned.

I sold my car and i regreted it ever since it was gone. I got it back this year and although its not pristine im more than happy to work on it and soon drive it again. I tried to fill the 500E void with 600SEL and SL and it just doesnt work.

I put it on pause for now, we’re looking to buy a new house with a bigger garage so I don’t keep my other cars outside during the summer. Vegas sun is burning through everything.

I don’t have much to do to be done with it but I feel like it’s the most expensive part. Interior is dry and old and paint is bad.
The suspension needs a refresh but that’s not expensive.

My father used to have w140’s, I feel I’m too young for it :D

I have refinished the wheels and one is losing air constantly, tried to fix it but still leaks, boy is that annoying. The place is the best in Vegas but they fked up and blame it on me cause I asked to refinish and repair is not that.
They promised to do the right thing so I have to take them back to make sure they’re “round” and they’re “not too old” to be refinished.

Are the leaking wheels chrome? If so... yeah... they are notorious for leaking air. If the leak is confirmed at the bead, you can ask a tire shop to try adding a sealant at the beads to see if it helps. Otherwise, swap on non-chromed wheels.

Silver Arrow calipers look nice! Are those painted or powder coated?

The wheels used to be chrome, I have them chemically stripped and cnc machine lipped then painted and clear coated.
The inside of the wheel have been resealed. Still leaks 🤣

The calipers I think are powder coated.
The downside is that I can’t use my old rims on the car as they don’t fit over the calipers. I’m left with no way back to non leaking wheels :D

Sweet! What did it cost to get the calipers powder coated, btw? Were they coated as-is, or disassembled?

That's crazy about the air leak. I'd use bubble solution to pinpoint the leak source... make sure it's not the tire. Although, after the brake upgrade it won't matter.

It was about $400 for all calipers. The deal was that they check if calipers work and seals are good and powder coat as is or if there’s issues and needs rebuild - they’ll disassemble. It turns out they were fine.

The leak is small and they can’t pin point it. It drops from 40 to 30 psi in a couple of days.
Tires are brand new and that wheel has been repaired/welded previously.
The issue as they are guessing is “old rim” and previous repairs don’t help. My question is why resealing it doesn’t work.
I always had in mind to paint it silver and have this wheels, now that I’ve decided on original color - I like evo wheels more. But I’m too deep into this ones for now. Have to make it work.

40 to 30 psi in a couple days is a BIG leak. Should show up in a dunk tank. Definitely something weird. Triple check the valve stem, and the core, btw.

The rim was welded before and nothing seems to help, I’m in a big a55 with this wheels. I regret the journey.
I need new wheels. Original chrome don’t look good (pealing) and don’t fit over my new calipers.

I need to be done with the car mechanically so I can move to the next steps (mechanical -> suspension -> body -> interior). I’m stuck with damn wheels, leaking hydraulic pump, fuel issues and bad transmission.

The leaking ex-chrome wheels are the stock 16", right? Those won't be any use with the SA calipers. The new Monoblocks have no issues, correct?

Is the tandem pump leaking SLS fluid, or PS fluid? Shouldn't be a big deal to reseal. From your post on the other thread it sounds like you may need to replace the fuel tank vent valve.

What's wrong with the transmission?

:hornets:

@gsxr,
I interpret the leaking rim to be a welded repaired Monoblock.
@Rado,
Can you confirm? If so why don’t you replace the leaking rim? Your going to have to do something if you want to use the SA Calipers.

You should be able to find one on eBay.

Yes, the leaking rim is former chrome monoblock. I look on eBay for a similar one. Then the rear one of them has been sealed twice already. Still leaking but on a much slower place. Did the road force balancing and all of them came close to the out limit, that’s after second repair and reseal. Wheels are a painful topic for me as I’m about $4k in them. I should’ve just custom make them, there’s a Russian company, Power Wheels that did Evo 2 19” for a E500

Leaking pump it’s something I don’t want to tackle alone, I only do straight forward jobs )

Thank vent and hoses ordered last night.

Transmission kicks from 2nd to 3rd I guess, that’s the starting gear. Makes a whining noise when in reverse. Car pulls strong as long as not on kickdown, once fully pressed - warning is flashing like im doing burnouts and cuts power. Put new oil and filter, same. Diff abs sensor can’t be removed without lowering subframe, o wanted to clean it.

Found an older guy that worked at Mercedes dealer since forever and now as a retired I guess, picks only interesting jobs to do at his home. I managed to catch his interest on this unit and might go to see him next week.
It pisses me off that driving the car feels like vibrating chair massage. There’s no vibration whatsoever with the stock chrome 16”
I also want to take the stock front calipers and paint them silver and put stock wheels for now.

Ouch, that's painful... $4k invested and you still don't have a set of straight wheels that hold air. HRE and some other US companies will also custom make wheels for you at similar price ranges, no need to go to Russia. If you like the Evo style, just order NEEZ, they have the correct width/offset. I would not recommend 19" though.

Transmission shift issues might be resolved with some springs tweaks in the VB, but if there's whining in reverse, that's not good. Sun Valley rebuild may be the easiest option.

For the ASR engagement when you haven't broken traction... first question, what size tires do you have mounted front vs rear? If they are 275/35R18 and 245/40R18 as seen in your photos above, those are correct.

Next, are there any fault codes appearing on the ASR/ABS module? Need to check that also. It is most likely NOT the wheel speed sensors on the diff. Nothing to remove or clean there, don't bother. Use a blink code reader and check all modules.

@Rado,
Sorry to hear your having so many problems with your car. The E500E is really a great car once the issues are resolved.

BTW, Where did you get those rims? I may be wrong but it sounds like an unscrupulous seller tried to repair an unfixable set. There may be recourse there.

I concur w/ gsxr on running 19”’wheels. 18” wheels are the limit on E500Es. I run thru two sets of Michelins in your sizes without any problems.

noted everything you said.
There’s no warning lights of any kind and the tires are from a e55 door sticker.
Any place I can find this neez to order? I mean do they make them new? I kinda had enough of old wheels.

I was undocumented when I got the rims, o thought the initial product is not an issue, that it can be fixed. I should’ve done more research then)

I need 2 weeks to put my life back in place, hopefully, then it’ll be full send on bringing this car back.
I’m getting quotes on paint and interior. Might as well send it overseas with cheap labor to do it ))
