WANTED Rear hub puller tool

Want to buy (or rent) rear hub puller. Think it’s a SIR B90 (or equivalent). Not sure I want to take a chance on the big slide hammer method…. Thanks!

J.M., if you have a slide hammer setup... it won't hurt to try. You'll know pretty quick if the hubs will come out or not. If they move at all, keep hammering and eventually the hub will pop out. One advantage to the slide hammer is that you don't have to disassemble all the parking brake mechanism.

However if the hub doesn't budge - then you need the big guns (B90-M or similar). And, the parking brake stuff all has to come off.

There are some offshore copies of the B90 tool now. See links below. Ignore the silly picture of the tool sitting on top of a brake rotor in the eBay listing.

Thanks! If I try the slide hammer, should I be worried about damaging suspension components with all that banging? Also, any guess for the chance of success with the slide hammer? I did a rear bearing on our 124 wagon about 15 years ago, I just took the whole hub assembly out and had a machine shop remove/install the bearing.

Nope. Shouldn't damage anything. Remember to remove the axle shaft nut.

I think it depends on the size of the slide hammer. The larger the hammer, chances improve. However, sometimes the hammer just won't be enough. I wouldn't buy a slide hammer, only try that if you have one laying around (and, an adapter to bolt to the wheel hub). If you have to buy something anyway, get the real tools. Both of the aftermarket tools above are quite a bit cheaper than the B90-M (which is ~$500).

Yeah, if you don't have the B90 tool, the next step is removing the complete wheel carrier and paying a shop to use a hydraulic press on it. That's actually more work, and it isn't fun to access the bolts for the 5 links at the carrier... and when installing the bolts must only be tightened in the 'ready to drive' position. I wouldn't remove the carrier from the car unless the B90 tool was unable to pull the hub out.

J.M. - forgot to ask, do you have the tool to R&R the bearing? This is available separately, but if you don't have it, the B90 kits include the pieces needed to R&R the bearing.

:seesaw:

Hmmm. Any chance you can borrow a slide hammer for free? Any free rentals from the local McParts / FLAPS?

If you gotta spend money, I'd shell out for one of the B90 clones instead. Those are guaranteed to work.
