Rear view mirror round rubber stickers??

Hi guys what are these 2 stickers in back of my mirror?

They aren't stickers, meaning they aren't held in place with adhesive. They are buttons that press through small holes in the mirror corners.

I've seen these on mirrors in later 124 production, usually 1992-1994 or so... but I have no clue what they are for, and why only certain years seem to have them.

Not all cars of a given year have the mirrors with the round buttons, either.

Bump ons so they don't strike the glass. Both my 93 and 94 had them, not sure when they started to show up.

I had about 2 dozen w124 mirrors at one point. Down to about 10 now.

But what I can say for sure is that botton or no botton is not dependant on model year. It must seems some had them and some did not.
