Isn't clear if the car is for sale, or it was just built as an advertising / marketing tool. Note the adjustable front camber plates, and plastic distributor covers (119.97x items) which did not come on the 119.98x (1996-99) models. Based on the mild power output, I'm guessing it's ~10:1 compression with low boost. Shoot, they were claiming ~440hp at the crank from a naturally-aspirated 6.0L... 510-525hp (article shows 2 conflictig numbers) with twin turbos seems like a lot was left on the table for all the custom work done. Neat car though.

RENNtech’s Resto-Mod 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500

A “Resto-Mod” is a blend of old and new technology. This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500 RENNtech has been fully restored, maintaining the original classic styling while adding the latest technological advances in performance and comfort. On the outside, this classic roadster received new custom metallic dark grey paint, an AMG aero package straight from the factory, and custom RENNtech wheels.

On the inside is where the real fun begins! The ’98 SL500 motor has been bored out 4 mm to 100 mm and stroked to 94.8mm transforming the old 5.0L powerhouse into 6.0 liters. For optimum results, a Bosch Engine Management System was installed together with a handmade wire harness for the engine. Software application and programming of the ignition and fuel required the tedious, time-consuming process of working from the ground up.

RENNtech engineered a custom intake manifold which was handmade by its highly talented fabricators, as well as all the necessary pipes and hoses, for the installation of 2 twin Borg Warner turbos. 400 plus fabrication hours later the custom exhaust and intake along with a water to air intercooling system complete with a heat exchanger lowered in the middle of the V fit perfectly.

To support the extreme power increase, both the chassis and driveline had to be reinforced. The convertible’s inherently soft chassis was upgraded to be stiffer for better handling, on a par with today’s’ convertible. A limited slip differential was added to improve handling and traction, the transmission was reinforced to handle the additional power. This SL500 is equipped with a fully adjustable sport suspension package allowing for the perfect ride height and damper settings in any environment. Finally, the unique custom ceramic brake package was designed, engineered and tested to work with the proper balance of the vehicle, to manage the increase in speed and performance.

At 525 HP / 510 LB-FT TQ at the crank, this resto-mod is certainly measuring up to today’s modern roadster.

Classic Mercedes with modern supercar performance and handling. Contact RENNtech today and breathe some new life back into your Mercedes.

Cool car. I'm sure the turbo is a blast.

The styling on this car is confusing. They kept the stock front bumper, but then put the pre-facelift side vents with the older AMG kit with the decklid. Then they went with the older taillights too.

Precisely what I was going to say, really cool car, but the styling choices to me are a little odd as you mentioned. love the color!

Hi.
Is there a 722.6 gearbox in the car?
When i am counting on this, i get it to be 21% drive train loss!
That sounds a lot ....

Dave,

What’s all that drool on the pics?

Nice one off car. Engine looks awesome! The conservative 525 HP/510 TQ ratings. May be that the 6.0 block can’t take much more and be reliable. That’s still a lot of HP.

It goes to show that RennTech could still do modifications on our E500Es if they chose to go in that direction.

I love the wheels. Are they 18s?

If it’s for sale I’ll bet it will cost a bunch of $$$$$$

I guess this is hobby over a cliff. If I want a TTV12 R129, why wouldn't I get the AMG version from the factory with retractable roof? The wood, leather and build quality are all there. Are people thinking the R129 chassis is actually better than the R230, or is it just older? Am I missing something?

maw

Terry, I think the wheels are 19's, but I can't say for certain. The M119 block was pushed near 1000hp by the factory in the Sauber race cars, so I don't think that is the limiting factor.

The car should have a 722.6 transmission, and AFAIK RENNtech only has chassis dynos, so all the crank HP/TQ numbers are estimates. You can take the rear-wheel dyno data and apply whatever loss factor you think is appropriate. I generally find 18% to be accurate for the 124/722.3 combo, not sure if there is really that much difference with the 722.6 trans. Heavier drivetrain components (LSD, brakes, wheels, tires) also sap power and could eat another percent or two. You'll never get an accurate crankshaft number without putting the motor in an engine dyno cell, out of the car, and even then the numbers will vary depending if the belt-driven accessories are mounted (alternator, PS pump, etc). I much prefer a rear-wheel number, if you know the type of dyno used (i.e., Dynojet vs Mustang, etc).
