Rotor drive tightness

Hi all,

I’m changing the distributor insulators on my 1991 500e and have found that someone has been in there in the past. It has done 237,000km so it’s not un-expected.

The rotor drive which bolts to the camshaft has about 2mm of slop, this is on the passenger side. Is this an issue?

It looks like someone tightened it up over the locating tag and then filed the damage away a little too excitedly.

The back of the distributors were very wet though so at least it’s a worthwhile job.

It's probably not a big deal... if you can pick up a good replacement without much trouble, that would be ideal, but otherwise just bolt it up with the pin located properly in the slot.

Also, after having the center bolt loosen up and back out (destroying the cap, rotor, and insulator)... I now recommend using a bit of blue threadlock on the center bolt for extra insurance.

This is good, I was worried the location was particularly important, I know it shouldn’t be but considering how picky the ignition system on these is I wanted to be sure.

Unfortunately Workshop information does not state torque values for the distributor system.

Centre ignition rotor bracket bolt: 9nm

Note that unless you have a special low range 1/4 drive torque wrench I would not attempt this at such a low value
