BERU EVIL183 Rotors at NAPA Auto Parts

Commute is 35mi each way. Another day of no warning lights so I'm in the clear with the EGR issue. Accel really feels better and smoother but still some issues when hot at idle so will be grabbing parts and going after LH module to get this baby to 100%.

I believe Bosch is the right source for those ignition coils?

Also, at the risk of starting a holy way, I'm going to grab a spare set of rotors - is Bosch or Bremi preferred (post weird 3.25mm Alan head retrofit of course)?
You can get the BERU-boxed rotors from NAPA ---- made in Germany. These are sold at NAPA as "Altrom" which are actually boxed as "BERU EVL 183" which are actually reboxed OE/Doduco. Note "EVL183". The EVL183 by Beru are reboxed OE/Doduco - #9 -- see this link from @gsxr

Lots of other aftermarket places sell the updated EVL1831... which is not what you want...... because the "1831" signifies the Facet-made ones which are made in someplace else.... for Beru.

Note the 20% off coupon. Also note that you can make out the "119" on the part as well as the MB star. These rotors do not have the weird 3.25mm Allen head bolts.

Oooo. If you can still get the EVL183 (reboxed OE Doduco)... get 'em while you can!

OE are $134 list each, $100 Naperville. Shockingly (*rimshot*), they are not yet NLA.

:spend:

As of Sep12th2023, I was able to get 4 of the EVL183 rotors from Napa. Didn't inquire on stock notes, but they were sourced out of Nashville TN -> shipped to my local Napa. Decent price with the 20% off putting things at $47/per after tax.

EVIL183 rotors are definitely still available from NAPA, either in-store, or free shipping. If you are a AAA member, you can enter your number for an $11.00 discount on a pair of rotors. These are the real-deal BERU manufactured rotors, same as those from MB that are double the cost.

Get a spare pair while you can!

NO such luck here in Kingwood TX, it crashes and says UHOH something went wrong and that is for 1. I do have 2 left out of the 6 I ordered a few years back from NAPA

It seems the NAPA cart will only let you purchase if local stores have inventory - and it doesn't make this clear. Also, it doesn't have any way to check what stores have inventory, without entering random zipcodes. Talk about a bad eCommerce experience.

I can't buy any at Napa either. Grrrr
Are Bosch via RM my next best substitute?
Yes. Bosch is second choice. I wouldn't use anything else.

Did you try punching in other zipcodes to see if you can find a store with inventory, either near you, or near some friends/relatives?

:archer:

Here you go. Still available on the aftermarket. Everyone should get a spare pair. Caps and insulators too.

Depending on mileage driven, rotors aren't really an item that requires changing frequently. I think in 20 years of owning my car, I've changed them, what, TWICE now?

Rotors are NOT a frequent wear item... but at this price (half of what you'll pay at the dealer for the same thing), it doesn't hurt to put a pair on the shelf for the future.

I think a lot of caps+rotors get replaced due to either looking terrible, or when chasing a misfire that is actually caused by something else (moisture, oil from cam seals, etc). YMMV, etc...

:shocking:

It appears that NAPA is also carrying the Beru caps (under the Altrom brand, part number ATM VK475S) for $135 apiece.

The MB caps are now part number 119 158 01 02 26, and list price is $260 each (discountable to ~$200). With the 26 suffix, it is very possible that Doduco caps are NLA from MB and they have moved to another supplier.

Insulators are now list price $200 from MB, discounted to around $150 apiece....

List price of rotors from MB is $134, discounted to ~$100 each. So the NAPA deal on the EVIL183s at one-half the discounted price is a good one, indeed.

OE/Genuine caps had been Bosch. I believe years ago, they were different/better than aftermarket Bosch, because the OE version had a clear lacquer coating which the aftermarket caps did not have. However, I recall reading posts here in recent years that the OE caps no longer had the extra coating, and were otherwise identical to aftermarket Bosch. I have no idea what the -26 suffix indicates, someone would need to order a pair (at $400!) to find out.

I still do not know if the Beru caps are any better than Bosch, but more than one person (myself included) has received a defective Bosch cap new out of the box, which really soured me on buying them again. NAPA is showing the Beru/Altrom caps as "Call store for availability", which is odd.

Insulators are still ~$50 for Bosch aftermarket, last I checked.

I picked up the three available at my local napa today. All 3 are black Duduco 😍

Tried to order more and find out why the weird pick up only/no shipping issue online. Guy had no clue and couldn’t order any more 😣

Good point. If an M119 has 1 distributor fail catastrophically, the car will still run and be drivable don't ask how I know.

:duck:
at the risk of dumping fuel into the exhaust and killing the cat.

Yeah, M104s will also run in a coil pack or two fail, but same problem. Had that happen twice, maybe three times over many years.

M117 distributors/rotors/coils are exceedingly reliable, and very definitely don't have the moisture and internal cap arcing issues that M119s do. I've in 21 years never had an ignition failure on an M117, and I've owned three of them plus an M116 !!

You won't immediately kill the cats if you're careful, meaning light throttle, careful acceleration etc. It really acts as a great safety feature, and allows you to pull over into a parking lot safely without the car dying, and becoming a danger/hazard. I did exactly this when my passenger side distributor rotor failed completely, while accelerating from a light on a major state route.

Yep, I drove my E500 on 4 cylinders for about 15 miles when the EZL failed in 2009 and killed one bank of cylinders. Didn’t kill my cats but I’m sure didn’t do them too much good. New spare EZL solved the problem.

Still, never had an ig failure on a 117, including EZL.
