Hi All,
Currently in the process of importing my 92 500E with Evo wheels and facelift bonnet. I'm very happy with and excited to get back on the road with its UK plates. car was imported from Japan 3 years ago and in that period had a full respray and suspension and bushing all refreshed.

Bought it in Latvia and driven 1600 Miles home including a nice blast on the autobahn. few issues undoubtedly presented themselves biggest one being the radiator top clips coming loose and causing it to push into the fan and the fan then shattering luckily at a service station.

Minor leaks also appeared which I tried to track down in a hotel car park but all home ok safe and sound 2 days later

Car is now at the garage having new fluids replaced, a few of the rubber hoses refreshed and a new gasket. hopefully, this will remove all the leaks and get it ready for summer of motoring.

its booked in for paint correction to get rid of some of the orange peel on the bonnet and a couple of areas of overspray.

Have to say it has been a baptism of fire. having only previously owned cars from new and then buying a 27-year-old car was a leap of faith but I'm super excited by my purchase, makes me smile when I walk out the door. and hopefully once I get my paperwork will be burbling around London.

Whoa what an adventure already in your new ride! Welcome. And a ride on the Autobahn for a special baptism for your 500E. Very cool.

Coming up to a year of ownership now so thought I’d give an update on my journey so far.

March 2020
First service was nerve racking with them checking over the car over for a first time. Asked them to change Oil, Coolant, Air Filters and a general Check over. They came back with needing new engine mounts, head gasket, oil breather hose and finally MAF sensor not working. Expensive first visit but all considering not too bad.

May 2020
Exciting bit of news was after a couple of months waiting (Thanks Covid) I now I have a UK Registered car.

Next up was something a bit more fun ditching the avantgarde grill and fitting standard grill

June 2020
This months surprise was the transmission leaking if the revs got high, only finding out on a motorway once it dumps a lot of fluid all over the exhaust.

1610467934758.png

Visual inspection shows the old pan was sealed with a lot of gasket sealant. So off to Mercedes to order a new one and gasket and spending a few hours scraping all the crap off the bottom of the transmission.

Unfortunately, it did not fix my issues so off it went to get rebuilt completely.

August 2020
Next up I had a slight lumpy idle when it got hot and the car seemed to run slightly hot when running in London traffic in the summer. They did mention when they replaced the coolant that the old coolant was very brown and had some rust in.

1610467979184.png

Drained the coolant from the radiator, then refilled with deionised water, left engine to run for a little bit with heater on and repeat a lot of times with over 100 litres of water to really flush the crap out as you can see there was a lot of sediment in the cooling system. Then finally filled with antifreeze and now runs a good 10 degrees cooler.

Then on to the lumpy idle as I saw on the forum countless time about checking caps and rotors thought I would just replace anyway as a first point. So, I replaced them with a new set of Bosch caps and rotors.

September 2020
Id noticed when doing other items, the PCV hoses were rock solid and a couple of the joins had small cracks. So armed with the list of part numbers from here I ordered a new set of PCV hoses and replaced them all.

Also the lumpy hot idle was still their so inspected the spark plugs and they were very gunked up so ordered new set of Bosch Ignition Leads and Plugs. Gapped the plugs and installed them. When doing the leads, I removed the caps and rotors again and took out the shields behind them which were also pretty bad state so cleaned them all up and put everything back together. seems to run a lot better now but still a tiny little bit uneven if sat in traffic for a while but pulls better so the final bit will have to be checked over when its back in the garage.

November 2020
After all that I got around to a job that had been annoying me since I got the car. The blower motor would squeak on low fan speeds like crazy. Laptop setup and following the guides on here I got to replacing the motor and also giving the whole area a very good clean before putting it back together.

1610468033824.png

I also flushed the power steering fluid as it was black. I did this by sucking the fluid out of the reservoir and then turning the steering wheel from lock to lock and repeating until the fluid was clean. Which gave a very satisfying before and after picture.

Finally, in what was a busy month on the car my wife had been complaining about back ache which I didn’t understand as I find it a comfortable place to sit. Turns out her seat was only going up and down on one side. Out came both seats and cleaned up all the motors and fixe the cable that had been rounded out.

January 2021
I had embarrassingly loud squeak from the rear of the car at low speed which I thought was pads so took off the pads put some grease on the back and that got rid of that.

I also saw the belt was frayed at the edge on one spot. So replaced the belt which was probably one of the easiest jobs I’ve done. Being the 2nd style tensioner it was as easy as pull on tensioner with a spanner and pop the belt off one of the top pulleys and do in reverse a 20 minute job

Belt was actually delaminating in that spot so happy I caught it when I did.

Overall its certainly been an eventful year. And at times I certainly wished it would just be like a new car and I didn't have to worry about anything. but I bought the car with open eyes and new it had been sat for a long time so expected there to be a laundry list. Either way for every time it gets on my nerves their is always another time it makes me smile to see it outside.

Here is a picture from the summer where I got to enjoy it at a drive-in cinema on one of the few occasions we were not in a lockdown.

Sounds like you are tacking things methodically and the right way. Kudos to you for that. It will be never ending, but that is the nature of the beast. Hopefully the issues will become fewer and further in between. Thanks for the update on your beautiful car.

Couple of Smaller Jobs done.

Damp spot in the boot caused by the aerial grommet which had seen better days.

1610625989951.png

Also the guages were a bit of a mess with the needles sun bleached and the bottom looking a bit of a state.

1610626355871.png

Took the guages apart and cleaned up as much as i could. then reapainted the needles with some tamiya model paint. I think the orange is a bit to dark but still looks alot better than it used to.

Finally had some decent weather today where it hasn't been sub-zero or raining. so ticket a couple of jobs off.

First, replace the Fuel Pumps and Fuel filter. no clue when the filter had been done and the pumps were originals so just replaced them all with Bosch ones. Apart from my hose clamps not being wide enough to properly seal the hose causing a slight panic and some fuel leaking all went ok.

Then on to Injectors, when I did the spark plugs I noticed Cylinder No. 6 was coked up and I keep have a very slight lumpy idle when sat in traffic.

Interestingly Cyl 7 on the left Cyl 6 on the right with a completely different tip so glad I'm replacing them all.

Old vs New. Managed to get a whole setup rebuilt on eBay for £180 which I didn't think was bad at all and the look to be spotless and had caps on with the o rings lubricated.

Were the holes in the ends of the pintle caps drilled out appropriately, so as to properly surround the trio of injector jets? The caps that I've seen (and had) required this, as the holes were too small.

Probably me being thick but i don’t follow?

Those look like plastic injectors. Are the metal ones NLA? I got a spare set of new metal injectors a few years ago and although the plastic injectors were offered, I asked if metal ones were still available and was told yes but I would need to wait a few weeks. Three weeks later, the metal injectors were at my service tech’s shop. Not sure how the plastic injectors will fare against the metal ones, but I wanted to have what came with car originally.

The cars came from the factory with combo plastic and metal injectors. The black portion at the bottom is metal.

Look at the post I linked to above. Those are without question my original injectors. First time they’d ever been removed from my intake/cylinder head.

AFAIK, all of the 4-5 different part number OE/Genuine injectors are a mixed of metal and plastic. The upper portion with the electrical connector is plastic. This might just be a plastic external casing around a metal internal body. There are at least 3 different color plastics... white, blue, orange (varied by model year between 1992-94 or so, then I think used the same/final part number from 95-up?).

There was an aftermarket Bosch replacement injector with a narrow body, that appeared to be all blue plastic. I don't know if this is still available, it appears NLA from most sources. Steve, I think this skinny plastic injector was probably what you turned down, in favor of the OE type shown above.

Plastic version shown below.

Thank you for the clarification, gents. Although I did not actually see the plastic injectors, my service tech told me about them and told me to hold tight while the metal ones were available. My original injectors are still ok, with close to 170K miles on the clock. But I did have them cleaned when the car reached 100k miles and that included the full monty, o-rings, spacers and filters. Got a spare new set just because. My service tech has a separate parts storage for my car, so I keep all of my spare parts there.

so all 8 were replaced with the orange ones I went with GSXR post with the below and ordered a complete set seems to drive just fine :)
