Given the private sales that have been taking place over the last couple of years now not nearly as shocking as it would otherwise seem. New record but not by a staggering amount.
Agreed, seemed like $600-700k was where the smart money thought it would land.
It's interesting to think about that number relative to other MBs though...am I right in thinking this is a high watermark for anything that's not a Gullwing, not a pre-war item, and then not a CLK-GTR? I think SLRs are still worth more but if I'm being honest I'd much rather have this and I'm sure I'm not alone so maybe these are still....undervalued?

In private, this level of pricing has been going on for a while. This car is coming to Miami, just a few blocks away from my office. I’ll go check it out and maybe have a photo op with a certain Silver 4 door sibling a few years younger… I’ll post that on my ownerr’s thread…
The Holy Grail 957/958 I posted there sold/traded not too far from this. And that was 3-4 months ago. These examples will always have a place among the ones that know the scarcity and low production numbers. The car was bought for inventory so expect it to trade even higher on next round.
I’m still mind boggled as to why a well sorted .036 can’t get out of its way on value under 6 figures, save for the few 958s that have traded at $100+ in the last 2 years.
With such low production numbers and even lower as USA specs, they should all median above $50-$60k+ at least if they are mid mileage cars. All things being equal. When most parts become NLA value will just go down, so thank MB for that. No thank you.

For that tow cover I will try to find you the strap part number, I changed them last year on the C36.

I, like a wally, and being in a rush, broke one of the retaining straps taking off the tow hook cover, and was wondering if anyone out there has just one spare hanging around that they don't need. Will gladly pay for cost and shipping. Russell

I supposedly won an auction on HaT due to a glitch in their system. I was bidding/watching on 2 computers and on my phone.
Pierre's $0.02 below. Difficult to claim BlueRidge was shilling when five other bidders went well beyond his max bid. 
Amazing the owner bought it for $50k and sold it nearly 30 years later for 15x. Bummer they didn't make the final bids public after it was over, or at least which of the Final Five sealed the deal.

Not very familiar with MBM, what are the seller's or MBM's rights for the buyer's privacy? Can they elect to remain anonymous or do they sign that right away when bidding?
What if tuned is higher quality than stock? 
I understand Pierre's comment on the term ""Hammer". Having examined the 300E Hammer the M-B museum displayed last year, I can confirm the engine bay is a mess. The fire wall was bent to accommodate the engine and has sharp edges, and there is a jungle of wiring and vacuum hoses. The Museum car had everything sprayed in 199 black even the window trim and rubber parts!
Having owned stock and tuned M-Bs for long term. Stock is of course easier to fix.. but tuning takes these cars to a new level.

I have no idea, but in a normal auction, you can see each bidder's user ID and bid amount. Would be nice to see that data for the 'sealed' process as well, for grins.
It will also be interesting to see if other DOHC M117 owners decide to retire early based on the recent results!
What a shitty, embarassing experience on the MB market. Wasn't the whole point of these online auctions to have more transperancy and also have potential buyers avoid getting 'sniped' at the last moment like on eBay motors? I bought two cars on BaT and found that part useful and de-stressed the entire experience.
