ADMIN EDIT 2: Car is sold as of mid-March-2015. Thread title updated.

Is anyone familiar with this car? Mecum doesn't post any additional information. I'll check it out and see if I can be there when it is auctioned. I doubt there are any real buying "deals" at these big auctions. Mecum sold a few 500es over past year or so. Any more info? Anyone interested?

Re: 1992 500E Black/Grey Going to Mecum Auction Dallas Sept 4

Thanks for spotting this. Hopefully someone can get the VIN, mileage, etc. There's a good bet I've got this car in my database if we can just get the VIN, that should hopefully allow usu to give it a bit of history.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

Looks like a broken front fog light, and those appear to be real Hella smoked taillights (pretty rare). (Update: Might be MHW tails - not sure, see posts below.)

VIN = WDBEA36E1NB713961

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

Based on the pics (air intake hoses and upper radiator hose, seats) I would say mileage most likely is in a range of 100-160k.

I am pretty sure it does need big tune up like wiring harness, spark plug wires, rotors+caps, SLS pump, air intake hoses, radiator, ETA, etc + some exterior parts like Dave noticed.

I doubt it is Hella, I think it is like on the link, MHW brand

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

Like I said, I will head over there tomorrow afternoon. And try to post up the VIN, mileage, etc prior to the auction. Then post the auction strike price. I am temped to register as a bidder, but think that it will highly unlikely that this will be a bargain (sub $10k). Auction time 5pm CT Wednesday Sept 4.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

I think you might have a realistic shot at getting this car for a decent price. What I've seen over the years is that most MBs (often including "collectible" models such as Pagodas) don't often bring as much money at these regional auctions as they tend to do via high-profile national auctions and private sales.

500Es in particular don't do all that well; neither do cars like 126 coupes, 107 SLs, 129 SLs, etc. The "Captain Kirk" car that sold earlier this summer here in Houston is a prime example of this -- the buyer got a great deal on a wonderful car offered at no reserve through a regional auction.

If you can get this car for $7,500-$8,000 I think you would do quite well. Good luck and definitely let us know how things turn out with it - whether you bid or not !

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

Thanks Gerry for the comments.

I looked at Mecum's regional auctions for past strike prices on 500e. Again, no posted information on miles, vin etc. Looks like the Shatner car sold for $15k this spring in Houston. January 2013 a '93 sold for $15k and in May 12 a '93 sold for $11,500.

That is what led me to believe that the Dallas car would not be a steal. Mecum is "trying" to be like Barrett Jackson. I used to live in Scottsdale and attended BJ many times. And there were many cars that went cheap! And more that were unreasonable. They sure get people drinking and bidding.

This car is on the auction's first day at 5 pm. May not have the best pool of bidders. I guess it may be worth $100 to get registered as a bidder.

BTW, I am a Mercedes and Porsche guy. So the 500 is intriguing! I have two Mercedes: '05 G500 and '95 E300D. A Porsche 1997 911 Turbo (actually a RUF Turbo R). And I have one dependable, practical vehicle... '10 Lexus LX570. It reliably gets me to the parts counter for the other cars.

Good to be a part of this group - even if I am not an owner yet.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

Good to be a part of this group - even if I am not an owner yet.
It will be hit or miss on the price depending if there is someone who knows what the car is and wants it (or two people....), timing (as you say), etc. Otherwise it will go for a steal.

:welcome:

More than a few of our members here have started out as "prospective" owners who perused and participated on the site while searching for the "perfect" car. The great thing is that we have an eagle-eyed network of 500E-watchers, so just about anything that pops up for sale anywhere in the world, is posted here. Particularly if the VIN is available, because this can be used to track the car's history over time.

I have compiled a database of cars that have come up for sale over the past 10 years, mostly in the US but some overseas cars (for example, 500E Limited models). (Hard to believe that I started keeping these records 10 years ago last month!!) This means for many cars that pop up for sale, I have prior sale/ownership/condition information, which helps prospective owners and new buyers connect the dots on cars of interest/new purchases.

This is a great group to ask questions of as a prospective owner. Most questions have honestly been asked already, so some judicious searching will get just about any query you have, answered by the numerous model/chassis/marque experts who reside here.

No question is too dumb either....so ask away. We're a friendly bunch.

Cheers,
Gerry

You could be right. I forgot about the MHW's. They are a close replica of the Hellas, difficult to tell from photos which type they are. I have the Hellas on two of my cars and they are nearly identical to the MHW. I'm tempted to pick up a set of those MHW's (only at the sale price!) for comparison...

The tail lights might be from Hella. When I got my Hella tail lights, Speed-Autoteile had a set of dark tail lights available and I believe Speed told me they were quite dark.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

I actually saw, at Home Depot recently, in the spray paint section....some spray paint that is "blackout" paint for automotive lights. LOL !

My W210 appears to have the spray stuff. It works surprisingly well, believe it or not. Never tried it myself though.

Well, you should pick up some, then, and use it on your silver '94. It would (as compared to the smoked Hellas or MHWs) be very much in line with the long-standing "Ballin' on a Budget" heritage of that particular car. :stickpoke:

The silver '94 has clear tails, something I've not seen for sale. I'm not real crazy about them but I got multiple compliments that the clears went well with the silver color, so I decided to just leave them alone. I think the clears only look ok on a light color though (silver or white). Pretty much any other color and I'd prefer the smoked tails.

Well yea, and your clear tails do match nicely with the clear corners! I plan to, at some point this winter, put clear corners on my car....but let me know if you decide to switch out your clear tails...I could be interested in them if you decide to sell them.

Speaking of which. Anyone know of a vendor offering clear W124 taillights for sale? I've not been able to find them anywhere.

Standard as in clear? Compared to the Hella front turn signals, the tail lights look a bit smoked.

The Euro rear tails are a light smoke, very similar to the 94-95 USA rears, but not quite identical. The Hella smoked tails are quite dark by comparison.

Do clear or smoked tails, help one get more tail?

By the way, thanks Vookster with your recent sideways and upside down posts....I'm going to have to go to the chiropractor this week to work the kinks out of my neck and spine from looking at your photos !!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX)

Mecum provided me with a VIN: WDBEA36E1NB713961

Seller didn't provide the mileage, which can likely be pulled from the carfax/autocheck.

Can you all pull one? At least we are putting together the pieces of the puzzle.

Thanks!

Yikes, 60k miles and 5 years in Michigan! Lots of owners. Poor car. I'll check it out and report back.

I am sure that rust will be a big issue to watch for, particularly on the underside.

Thanks for posting, Karl!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX)

I checked out the car today. Wow, what a mess. This car is in very, very poor condition. I would not have purchased it for $4k. But it was bid up to $10k! But it didn't meet the reserve.

It had been repainted, was sitting very low, had pools of red fluid underneath, tires were showing cords, interior was dirty and very worn. Headlamps faded, and glass cracked. Rust spots here and there - small ones. Many rusted nuts/bolts under the hood. Probably much more underneath. One of the auction personnel stated that when he drove it, the AC didn't work.

There were two other guys looking at the car while I was there. They were disappointed in the car too.

I took some pics, but they really don't show the problems. Funny how digital pictures really make bad cars look good.

Would definitely be interesting to see what has changed, if anything, since texas993 inspected the car in September 2013 (see post #32 above).

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi, $19k (Houston, TX)

The paint was recently treated with C-Quartz Paint Protection after a thorough paint correction was performed

I wonder what percentage of "Bro-Juice" is included in that? <Stealing from Gerry>

Seems like plenty of it used in the interior.

If the description is to be believed they have done more than spit and shine - but I am always cynical of such things

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX)

...It had been repainted, was sitting very low, had pools of red fluid underneath, tires were showing cords, interior was dirty and very worn.

The new pictures present well & suggest a lot of the previous issues may have been addressed, however the dealer listing of recent service doesn't state anything about the tranny (the place where red pools of fluid comes from when any one of the multitude of seals fails).

If I were a prospective buyer trying to establish a comfort level with the asking price, I would inquire if recent tranny work was indeed performed.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi, $19k (Houston, TX)

Two major changes:

1) Front & rear facelift
2) Burled walnut wood refinished to dark/black color

This is literally next door to the '94 Spruce/Shroom and E36 wagon that we saw on Monday. I'm all kinds of busy tomorrow and 1/2 of Friday, but I'll see if I can get there Friday afternoon for a viewing.

I still wouldn't even consider it after seeing it in the condition it was when for sale in Dallas! If I recall, the car needed to be repainted - not "corrected".

Seller Comments
The wood is finished in ultra rare e60 AMG Birds Eye Maple. :star:

I noticed that as well and thought, "Does it matter if it's Bird's Eye Maple if you've turned it to black laquer"?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey (Mecum Auction, Dallas, TX

I have a set of new Hella clear corners (front) I'll be listing here shortly. Let me know if you're interested.

I was thinking the same thing. We have photos of the car not long ago with stock wood. New BEM is NLA so it's unlikely it now has original/genuine BEM wood.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi, $19k (Houston, TX)

Finally got to see this car today and it looks like someone has put some time and money into it since it was seen about 18 months ago in Dallas. Story is that the car was purchased by an older guy that started the work and passed away before it ended up in the current dealers hands.

Current dealer has a Bosch repair facility in his building and is supposed to call me when they find the documentation that came with the car and what they've done since it's been there. It should have significant receipts from the last 100 miles or so. All facelifted parts (hood, truck, lights, etc. excluding the stereo) are available and come with the car. He claims the black birdseye is the E60 wood? I actually liked it, but I think it would look much better in a black interior vs. the grey. Substantial restoration on the paint, replacement of 2/3 of the horizontal surface helped no doubt. They said it spent 2 weeks at the detail place getting a full rub down and some paint sealing process that I had never heard of before, but I'm going to follow up on that with the shop. Compared to 993's previous description, the paint looked good and I want to know more about that process. I should ahve asked to see the original hood and trunk to get a better appreciation of the previous condition. Lowers looked fresh, wheels refinished, new tires (although probably a brand that no one on the board would buy with their own money), original spare in the trunk with the storage tub/tools in place. All books, stamps recorded until it left Michigan (1992-2000) and, again, supposed to be more receipts that I'll get a call/email about when located. Door pockets were perfect, but the leather did have holes that had been patched from cup holders. Seats good shape for 138k miles. Under the hood: fresh radiator, fans, upper wiring harness, plugs, bright white coolant overflow tank even. drove well with no extra noises, but I did think the trans. was a little slow to downshift when prompted. SRS and CEL were on, but they claimed the seat had been unplugged for the radio upgrade and it just needed to be reset and the CEL was something else that was handled (don't remember what it was now) and just needed to be reset. Did not see any leaks, but the engine had been cleaned and detailed fairly recently (no death by Amorall, just clean) and it's probably gone less than 100 miles since all the work was done.

I totally forgot to look at the undercarriage...DUH!

I have pics, but have never successfully uploaded onto the site, so I'll need to send to GVZ and let him upload for future reference.

If anyone is interested in more detail, I can follow up or forward contact info. Place is between my house and my office (less than 2 miles), so no problem going by for more info or pics if needed. All that said, without support of some major receipts, I can't see $18k for this one and it makes the Spruce/Shroom one from next door look like a steal although it's more original and complete.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Grey, 139kmi, $19k (Houston, TX)

If I recall, Michigan was tough on the car. The bolt heads were rusted. I didn't look at the underside either.
