The time has come after two years of ownership and restoration to hand my 1992 500E to its new caretaker. During my two years of ownership I've spent over $38,000 (excluding purchase price) refreshing the car and tending to deferred maintenance items that should have been done by prior owners. Significant items I've tended to (primarily by Texas German Autohaus in Houston, whose owner is a fellow 500E owner/enthusiast) include pulling the engine and replacing the timing chain, replacing the timing chain tensioner, replacing both distributor caps, replacing the valve cover gaskets, replacing the thermostat, replacing the rear main seal, rebuilding the transmission (at ~87,000 mi), replacing the blower motor and blower motor regulator, replacing front right ABS speed sensor, replacing both front lower control arm bushings, replaced catalytic converter (MagnaFlow), replacing the Basic Module, replacing the radiator and fan shrouds, replacing AC compressor and drier, and replacing the engine belt tensioner. In addition, I had the antenna deleted and replaced with an internal antenna installed in the rear deck. All of the previously listed work is well supported by receipts. The passenger side front seat leather has been repaired in the rear part on the main seat cushion (prior owner). Date code on the upper wiring harness is 2010.

New Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 225/55 R16 tires were installed in May 2017 at ~88,000 miles.

The remaining issues with the car are primarily cosmetic. Noted issues are: (i) the speedometer sticks between 78-85 mph, (ii) the rear shade only goes up about two-thirds of the way, (iii) nick in the driver window tinting from my replacing the window motor, (iv) the interior lights to the AC controls don't come on on the driver side, (v) burlwood between front seats is aging, (vi) numerous paint chips, (vii) paint hazing spots on hood, roof/sunroof, trunk, (viii) minor body dings (including one on the roof that was there when I purchased...no idea how it happened), (ix) a couple of paint cracks, (x) a rock ding in the front grill, (xi) two chips in the windshield (both have been filled), (xii) both front door card's vinyl is no longer adhering well at the edge of the the map pockets, (xiii) the heating lines to the windshield washer sprayer have been disconnected, (xiv) staining in the floor mats, and (xv) very minor rust inside the trunk on the seam under the taillight (see picture in gallery). Other than the nick in the tint, all of these items existed at the time of my purchase (most of which were not disclosed in the Bring A Trailer ad by the seller).

With the exception of the paint work that was performed during the antenna delete, and the prior owner claims to have repainted the trunk lid, I don't believe the car has received any other paint work. At the time of doing that paint work, I found rust on the seam in the trunk below the driver side tail light which was mostly repaired/sealed by the paint shop (as noted above, there is still minor rust on the lowest part of that seam, which I don't know why the shop didn't address as I didn't inspect it for a while after). The CarFAX does note an accident in 1999, but I have found no evidence of any repairs.

Other items I've tended to, but aren't as well documented are replacing both front window motors, replacing the driver-side rod which holds the lock pull, replacing a poorly installed after-market radio with a new Alpine unit (previous seller claimed to have original radio, but couldn't find it when I took delivery...), replacing the side mirror boots which were badly cracking, replaced both sun visors (old ones' plastic was severely cracking), replaced brake pads (Akebono EUR561 EURO Ultra-Premium Ceramic Brake Pad Set), replaced the center console, reverted to the original 16" wheels as the after-market 18" wheels the prior owner had put on the car were improperly offset for the car, and replacing the temperature readout in the gauge cluster. I documented a number of these items in my owner thread here: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10262

You can find the Bring A Trailer listing from when I purchased the car here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1992-mercedes-500e-3/

I've got a clean Texas Title in hand. Car comes with detailed records from my ownership and some records from the prior owner. I also have all owners manual, original window sticker and two keys.

My part of Houston did NOT flood and this car was not exposed to any Harvey flooding. Thanks!

I'm sad to see this one leaving your care, wf758, especially after you've put in SO. MUCH. EFFORT. (USD 38K worth of effort above and beyond the orig purchase price of the car). Here is the latest Haggerty price estimation that I just pulled yesterday on Sept 15, 2018. I'll note that the top line price estimation jumped by +5K since Aug 24, 2018, which was when that super nice low miles car got auctioned off @ Monterey Car Week. (Concours Quality used to be 75K in Aug ---- now is 80K in September)

Lowered price to $36,500. Anyone know how to change the Thread Title?

Admin update: Done!

Beautiful work.....I too sadly know from experience how this kind of money can add up to even take a really “nice” starting car and get it to picky standards....I thought I had a nice car and inevitably I have spent more than damn near $50k to get it to my standard now (I was a high 20s purchase from another forum member here in 2015)......IMO this is the steal of the century for a would be buyer

I would happily guide anyone that buying a “not turd” decent $19-24k example in today’s market and then thinking you are going to inevitably get it to where you want it with $5-7k deferred maint is a fantasy......perhaps there are some on here that may feel different but I would clarify that those individuals probably are insanely skilled with the wrenches / have all the tools already / and most importantly have all of the excess time on their hands to be able to devote

Those of us that spend USD 20K/30K/40K+ to bring a car "up to our standards" are realists. We know what we can tolerate as subpar and what we cannot. And mostly, the list of things that we can tolerate as subpar can be counted on one hand, if not no hands. For if the list of subpar items is greater than one hand can count, we know that we will not derive any satisfaction, let alone pleasure, from this hobby of ours. We will be tortured with anxiety - the demons-of-imperfection will haunt us until these items are corrected.

And so we know we are to be doomed to be wedded - for eternity - to our OCD disease. Every car we "bring up to our standards" is a "marriage car" as opposed to a "dating car" which one might sell in a few years.

I've submitted the listing to Bring A Trailer and they have accepted it. Once I make the payment for the auction, I am required to pull this sale ad. Please let me know if you are interested. In going through the BAT process, I note that I did not previously disclose very minor rust inside the trunk (now disclosed above) on the seam underneath the tail light on the driver side. I had most of this repaired when they did the antenna delete, but for some reason, they did not get the very bottom portion. Here is a picture, which I've also included in the gallery. For reference, the photo is turned on its side (not sure why).

We can delete this thread from view, and for some reason if the car doesn’t sell we can reconstitute it. Just let me or GSXR or Glen know.

My guess is it’ll bring way more than $36.5k. It certainly should. But this will be a good market check (for me anyway), as I’ve detected some cooling in the car market these past few months (as the Fed, the stock market, Trump and the midterm elections all march forward). But I’m always open to being wrong, which is why I prefer data over opinion. Kudos to 600Eric for nudging the data upward over the summer.

Beautiful car, and hopefully rewarding ownership. “Right is right and nothing else is,” is my ownership mantra too. But alas, there’s only so much attention I can pay. So I get to it when I have to, or when I want to. Otherwise I just drive the damned thing, wash it, wax it, put it back up ‘til next time.

GLWS

Cheers,

maw

Re: FS: My 1992 500E, Black Pearl/Grey, 97kmi, $36.5k (Houston, TX)

Rewarding, indeed. I love this car and so do my teenage sons, who are sad to see it leave the stable. Yes...I've passed on the car obsession to the next generation!

I've paid BaT. Will be a bit before the auction goes live, but the car is no longer for sale here. Thanks guys!

Re: FS: My 1992 500E, Black Pearl/Grey, 97kmi, $36.5k (Houston, TX)

So if you post car for sale on BAT you cant have it listed elsewhere? Wtf

Re: FS: My 1992 500E, Black Pearl/Grey, 97kmi, $36.5k (Houston, TX)

So if you post car for sale on BAT you cant have it listed elsewhere?

BaT wants it to only be listed with them for the 7 days of the listing. They want to ensure that the car has the best chance of selling with a captive audience. After all, they get their fee from the buyer (aside from the $99 listing fee the seller pays).
