I have procured a set of AMG Aero II - 17 x 8.5 / 17 x 10 ET17,18 that are now residing in the lounge (yes the wife is away). The centre bits are black at the moment, and though the wheels seem to be straight without kerb damage or cracks they will need to be split and refurbished as I want them silver.

The question is whether to buy the necessary tools and do it myself, or just take them to a wheel shop and pay somebody else to do it... these guys seem to have most of the hardware http://www.titanium-touch.de/home.php

OK so had them done by a local shop and they came up pretty good, they painted the fasteners but still look the part I think... just waiting for 275/40/17 rubber to come in now.

Tyres fitted today - difficult to find 275/40/17 in Dubai, so ended up with Sumitomo HTR ZIII and 245/45/17 on the fronts.

Had to do a bit of searching for the small stainless valves too, but we got there.

Hoping to have the car out of the paint shop before the 10th.

Hello , have you removed the center pieces before painting ?

From the pictures it looks like the centers , screws and a part of the outer ring are painted all together :detective:

The centre caps were painted separately yes, but because the rims are quite old the wheel shop decided a better result could be had by painting the nasty part of the outer ring and fasteners - they did split the rims because they have been resealed, but yes it looks like they had to mask the rim to paint the fasteners after the rim had been re-assembled.

I know it isn't correct but they still look good IMO

Well had I seen those, perhaps not! I will drive on them like they are for a while, maybe a year or so down the track replace the rings and fasteners.

Do you really think that make sense to restore the old rings...

Just bought myself a new set of those.
Hi Juho.

I have a crack in the inner ring on one of my rear rims (happened with the previous owner). I have welded it using a weld wire with lower tensile properties than the ring material, more silicium instead of magnesium. I also followed a special preparation and weld sequence. It should last forever, but I like to replace the ring sometime.

How is the thickness and the weight on those rings compared to the original OZ? Do they appear to be forged?

Thanks
