Hi All,

I'm doing a Germany trip here in a few weeks. Will be visting Berlin, Neurumburg, Stuttgart, and Munich.

We plan to be in Stuttgart on Nov 27 and are signed up to do a 3 hr tour at the Sindelfingen factory, will also stop by the MB and Porsche museums. Also considering Technik Museum Sinsheim.

Are there any other car things around Stuttgart worth checking out? Are there any old electronic / automotive flea markets or anything in the area? I love going to old junk stores and wouldn't mind coming home with a suitcase full of old hazet tools or old MB parts books, diagnostic tools, etc. Is there anything like this I should check out ?

Open to any suggestions if you have been in the area.

Thanks,
Nate

Hi, I can’t recommend any flea markets or similar, but I strongly recommend visiting Sinsheim. I visited Stuttgart this time last year with two friends, driving over from the UK. The MB museum is superb, and will take at least half a day to see properly - I have been three times now and would happily go again! My friends are both Porsche nuts, but the Porsche museum is pretty thin compared to the MB museum, so we finished that up in a couple of hours (the day after we visited the MB museum). We then drove out to the Technik museum and spent the rest of the day there. It is an amazing place - from Concorde and Concordski mounted on the roof, through the fantastic car display to the extensive WW2 equipment, railway locomotives and aircraft. Highly recommended and ideally needs at least half a day.

I've visited the Sinsheim museum at least 5 times over the years.

I'd also recommend its "sister" museum, which is the Technik Museum Speyer, located in Speyer. I'd do both of them if you can. I have been to Speyer two times, last being probably 2017 or so.

Speyer is only a 30-minute drive from Sinsheim (40 km) and the museum is equally as good. They have more aircraft at Speyer and you can climb up these huge elevated staircases and walk completely through several pretty cool planes, such as a Russian Antonov AN-22 transport plane and a 747. They also have an interesting collection of naval vessels (including the U-9, a German submarine), as well as steam locomotives and of course, cars and such. A "Buran" Space Shuttle clone too.

Sinsheim has a lot of aircraft (Concorde, etc.) up on the roof, and a much larger collection of cars and such. Sinsheim also has a nice collection of military vehicles, and locomotives and such. I think you can also go inside the displayed Concordes at Sinsheim, if I remember correctly.

I think tickets are around $30 at each museum, but it's worth checking both out. Sinsheim is more of an "indoor" museum where much of their collections are inside; Speyer has a large indoor area, but has a lot of their stuff (naval vessels, etc.) outside where you walk around.

As pointed out above by Gerry: Sinsheim and Speyer are great!
Other than that there is the Daimler memorial in Stuttgart. Its in his old gardenhouse where he and Maybach worked together. It still looks like it did back then with tools and his workshop. The memorial is about 10 minutes from the MB museum.
Theres the Daimler birthplace in Schorndorf as well. Its a small museum about Gottlieb Daimler in the middle of the historic city center of Schorndorf.
Schorndorf is about 30 minutes from the MB museum in Stuttgart.
