Tool Bank

Not sure where to post this but here's something I'd like to see.
A tool bank.

Those of us who have certain tools would lend them out to those who don't and are in need.
Perhaps it would work something like this.
Say I need the tool to center my nuts or compress my springs, pretty much a once in a lifetime use (for me), but I really don't want to spend the $45 or $600.
I would Paypal the owner the full cost of the tool. Upon return of the tool the owner would return the amount, less rental charge and postage.
There would be a "Master List" of tools that member would be willing to rent out. Maybe this would be available for members with XXX number of posts, etc., etc.
Details could be worked out and of course participation is voluntary.
Just an idea.
Comments?

I believe this was proposed at an earlier date - there's a thread on it somewhere.

Nothing against anyone here, but personally I am very reticent to have my own tools leave my own shop -- although I have three loaned out at the current time (two of them to the Jack-Man). I think I got that reticence from my dad. Heck, he didn't even like ME to use his tools...I spent half a lifetime building my own sets of tools, and now I'm about to get deluged with a workshop full of his as well.

It's a great idea, if folks will participate.

:plusone:

Ditto what Gerry said. It becomes more complicated when the tool is NLA and irreplaceable if UPS/USPS loses it, or the renter breaks it. The deposit may not be much comfort at that point.

On the flip side, another option for folks who need the tool is to buy it new, use it, and then offer it for sale in the classifieds. Total cost may end up being similar but with less risk all around. Same problem applies with items that are NLA though.

:seesaw:

I believe a few folks have done just that - bought tools and then sold them to another after using them. One of these was the rear camber support arm bushing press.

I think forum based tool libraries are too risky and I'm not talking about the cost of the specific tool or it's possible loss. It's really the misuse of said tool. Catastrophic damage to the car or person using it is the real danger.

Ron that is a very generous and kind suggestion.

I know a lot of the mercedes tools are very difficult to find and expensive. Some tools can be rented from your local auto parts store. Not many MB tools but something that might get the job done. I typically try to buy the tool I need or at least something that will do the job and then I rarely sell them. Every time I've sold a tool thinking I would never need it again I need it again. I am willing to loan out to someone local though.

I used to rent out my spring compressor...even though one of the renters blew out the retaining clips from improper use. I don't rent my ball joint press after the lip started to get mangled... again, improper use..
In theory I think it's a Great idea, but in reality too many people don't know what they are doing and end up taking considerable life out of a tool relative to the job they are completing.

So, that said I do still send my tools out to individuals I Know will take care of them Properly..!

GO to Mercedesshop.com / peachparts - whatever they call it these days. There is a thread about renting tools.

I lent my Klann kit to a member here...and never got it back !

When you least expect it bro....you will regret fucking me over like that. Mark my words and keep those eyes in the back of your pin-head open wide.

who was the lame duck?

Tool ...

I won't air his name in the name of my dirty laundry but I'll take a picture of his bloody grill after I knock him out cold. Perhaps there also will be a newspaper article on-line on how this person had emergency surgery to remove the whole set from his rectum....along with my size 12 boot.

I guess my input on this thread should be to maybe get a deposit equal or greater to the value of the tool, just in case there are more opportunistic strangers lurking here.

Happy Holidays and I hope it was worth it ! (sorry G for the rant)

I agree. I've only loaned tools to people that are not tools, or required a full retail deposit. Usually, they go away after that.

+1. After getting tools back broken, or having to chase them down, I started requiring a deposit equal to the replacement cost. Got some complaints, but my tools started coming back in better shape and sooner. Funny how that works...

I didn't suspect or realize this guy was tool until it was after the fact...you'd like to think owning a .036 would kinda/hopefully negate the 'tool' factor, at least I did. My mistake !

Le$$on learned. Require a Depo$it next time! =)

It was the klann spring compressor tool?

Totally Austin, lesson learned...though I don't think I myself will be sending and lending tools out anymore, kinda sour on it now.

Yes, full spring compressor kit in the nice red box, it was practically new...they aren't cheap; as you know.

That is indeed, exceptionally bogus, if a member here borrowed Jimbo's tool & then deliberately refused to return it. Whoever that individual 589 is, should make good on the deal with apologies.

As a rule I never loan out tools though Jackasic has a couple of mine & I have a triple-square XZN Hazet head bolt socket (one of two I own) loaned out to a local Houston Benz owner.

I goes back to the rule that our fathers should have taught us:

Always return something borrowed in BETTER condition than what was received. . . and promptly!

I'm agreeable to the concept here with the deposit however it seems shipping costs would cut a slice from the usefulness on some items. If anyone needs something I have i'll co-operate. If any local members need to get under their cars for something let me know. I have a lift. All I ask is you let me tear around town with your ride for a few days. Anyone with a 6.L goes to the front of the line.
