Under dash veneer trim on pre 1989 AMG Hammer

Hi All,

Was the timber trim along the dash board as below fitted to some normal pre 89 W124 models or only the AMG Hammers? It’s of course noticeably different to the trim introduced in the 2nd generation W124 interior.

Only AMG. Not particularly Hammer. Wooden stripe what all 036 have was an option on pedestrian 124 ( second pic)

These wood kits in zebrano were fairly common in the 80s. There's also a kit that goes on the door panels that surrounds the handle. Some MB dealers even sold these as accessories, alongside the cheesy gold license plate frames. I wonder if the same company made these trims in different versions: zebrano, burl and maple.

The more exotic burlwood and maple versions may have been made exclusively for AMG (I haven't seen these sold separately) whereas the plain-jane zebranos were available to the general public (some sets pop up on German eBay occasionally).

Well, kind of. Are you looking to buy it? What kind? Zebrano or burlwood?
If I could get either I don’t mind I’d change my centre console to suit, my car is an ‘88 300E and doesn’t have any wood in doors or dash.

My centre console is Zebrano but I’d happily swap to burl if I could get my hands on a RHD set either way

I asked one of THE guys for wood here in D.
Will see. But there is no space for word "cheap" or "affordable" there, hope you know that.
And RHD??? I might be out....

The wood was standard equipment on 1990-up USA model years (aka MOFP-1). Get 1990-up door panels with pleated leather & wood, and a 1990-up dash as well, for a "factory" conversion. Probably need to pull the dash to replace the HVAC vacuum pods anyway.

As speedy explained above, the stick-on wood was an aftermarket thing. AMG only used this in the 80's because the factory wood didn't exist yet.

Surprised your not asking about the item directly in front of the center console storage unit. Something I have not seen before, wouldn't be applicable for most cars due to switches being located there, but would be nice to see better pictures of it

What you’ve suggested was my original plan but it has been difficult in Australia to source a black leather interior for some reason they just weren’t at all popular here. A pre 89’ donor vehicle with black leather interior has finally become available to me hence the questioning on this earlier wood trim.

What I am doing with my 88 300E (currently grey leather) is building a full hammer tribute but with modern driveline M156 and CD009 6 speed manual. So I started to think I would keep the interior as original as possible to the model year of my 300E, I have already ordered a set of Recaro CSE for the with the leather panels running longitudinal as per the pre 89 AMG W124 and to match the stitching of the rear seats.

I do like the pleated leather door panels though and Im not sure what to do with the flat door panel inserts of the early interior I may cover them in Alcantara as I will do the head lining and pillars in Alcantara.

M156 into an early W124 would be quite the build. Make sure you document this with lots of photos! I assume you know the 300E will need the complete V8 subframe and larger diff/axles, plus serious brakes to handle ~7lb/hp power/weight ratio.

Wood trim will be, literally, the easiest part of your build.

Haha yeah right about the trim. Go over to Benzworld and check out my M113K into 560SEC build thread, I’m no stranger to a little difficulty, I’ve upgraded all those parts you’ve mentioned plus many more!

Ok so I’ve got this sorted, many of the kits around I found and including on eBay Germany adhere to the existing panels under dash and glove box. I have found a company here in Australia that takes the trim pieces back to plastic then fits the veneer to them. Just waiting for price and also restoration of my centre console panels so fingers crossed it is not crazy expensive.

I also notice Apsis USA sells the kits, has anyone had experience with them before?

I did manage to get a trim set sorted for my 300E, I had it finished in Birdseye Maple and it looks amazing see below photo of my trims. So the time has come soon to fit them, were the trim pieces simply adhered externally to the interior panels such as doors, dash etc. or was the vinyl and foam removed to recess the timber trims?

My friend in Germany has these full optioned AMG door panels that they call Mpof 1.5. They were completely done in Buffalo leather to match the Recaro Classic seats! 😍

He confirmed the the wood panels are just glued on top of the leather. Same for the dash and glovebox pieces.

Thanks for the info kegmankipp, love those panels your friend was lucky to get them. I’ve decided I am going to do the infills in black alcantara to match in with my headliner and pillar covers.

Hello Brento,

May I ask who/where you had your trims refinished in Birdseye Maple? I wanted to have my R129 trim done in that finish, for a future interior upgrade.

Thank you in advance.

Chicky, I got them done by Wood and Carbon Works in Turkey, Ilker is the proprietor of the business, the quality is excellent, price is competitive and they are very easy to deal with. I have a R129 that I will be doing the same also: Wood and Carbon Works
Thank you Brento ... even if my reply was late. I highly appreciate the info 👍
