Underbody splash shield

Saw this on the face books

Wow! :kapow:$675.00 for that shield. That’s a real kick in the crotch. I don’t remember how far back BUT I’m sure glad I had bought a new bottom shield when I had the chance. It was under $100.00 at the time. Whew:)

whoa... interesting and unfortunate...

While unfortunate these panels are NLA for both 034 and 036, this is an item that should be possible to reproduce without too much hassle. Shoot, even a stamped-aluminum panel could be produced, although I guess that may cost more than fiberglass like the original. If your existing panel is damaged, they can be repaired. Replacement is only needed if the panel is completely missing. $650 for a NOS panel is something that only would be practical for a full restoration with open chequebook (think 600Eric, lol).

Agreed with this. Since buying my car I haven't had a splash shield on and would love to have one down there. But $650 is way too proud of a price for me to get one. Heck, there is another on eBay that is $2k (NOS Mercedes Benz W124 E500 500E under body tray 1245242730 | eBay)

What in the inflation?! I didn't even know my car had an underbody shield until the discussion on this board! I only started working on cars the last 2-3 years

See?! All a matter of perspective! The $2k splash shield makes rpm retro’s $515 Zoom tubes look like an appropriately priced item(!)

Can’t believe some members use the board’s enthusiast driven “for sale forum” to buy fairly priced parts to then turn around and sell them with a 3-5x markup, driving prices up for everyone.

I see part flipping as even worse than car flipping because it threatens an already fragile parts situation, making maintaining these cars even more difficult than it already is without this kind of “support”

@TimL -- don't get me started on forum members charging exhorbitant prices for parts.

It's why I used to sell sets of aluminum cam oiler tubes (with new o-rings) and valve bodies for half the price that many forum members were selling them at. It helps bring the prices down.

It's fine to make some profit on items, particularly when you go out and make the effort to harvest them. But there has been an element of greed that has crept into used parts pricing among some folks here.

It really shouldn't be about the money -- or less about the money and more about helping fellow community members.

And then there's the parts flipping, like RPM Retro got called out for. Notice that RPM Retro has been quite silent for the past couple of months.

Anyone checked with Retro about the status of repops?

This is a difficult item to ship, without damage, unless fabricating a miniature crate.

:klink:
Yes, the packing is cruisal! I bought a bottom shield plate from a US member last year and it went really well, post #32:

To do it right, the total production costs would result in a pretty hefty per unit cost. If there’s serious demand we can look closer into it and price it out a little more accurately. Would probably have to be in the 100 unit range for the price to be somewhat reasonable.

That would be amazing thank you, @gerryvz @gsxr is this something the site moderators could potentially assist with? As in, spreading the word to gauge interest?
Would be amazing to move as a group on things like this, I know there’s a lot of other parts people are dying for reproductions of as well
