E320 Rotor Dust Shield Replacement

Folks, the right hand dust shield on my 94 W124.032 is badly rusted and thanks to a referral from Dave I bought a used set from David Hendy. Unfort. the 3 small allen bolts holding the shield on are rusted to the plate and someone deformed the bolts in a previous effort to remove them . I tried a larger torx bit to no avail. I guess you have to cut the bolt heads off and drill out the threaded portion. I could use some advice how to do this.

In any event I decided to replace the wheel bearings due to high mileage -311K miles. I did it using the FSM and watching numerous 'How To' videos. Pretty straight forward. Some comments:

Bought a cheap scale to weigh the green MB grease.
Don't bother with a seal puller to remove the sealing ring. After 30 years its rusted in place. You drive out the interior race with a punch which will push out the seal.
Put the races in your freezer and heat the hub in your oven ( 250 degrees).
Bought an inexpensive bearing drive set at Harbor Freight. Makes driving the new races in a no drama affair. I think it would be difficult using the old races as a drift as many people did.
Don't grease the spindle.
Used a dial indicator to set the play. Took me several attempts to mount the device properly and then set the 2mm preload. Then several more trys to set the play at .01 to .02 mm.

I used factory parts. The bearing kit contains 2 bearings, 2 races, 2 caliper bolts, hub cap, locking screw, a radio interference clip which is no longer used and a sealing ring. Toss out the hub cap....it does not fit, I reused the old one.
Bearings and races made in Japan. Sealing ring from Germany.

Regards,

Peter
