WANTED US-Spec E500E Instrument Cluster

Hi, so, I've yet again joined the ranks of Mercedes owners with my 4th W124, but this time it's a full on proper one, an E500.

I've currently got a kmh instrument cluster and am desperately searching for a late mph donor cluster with 160mph showing (and apparently without a manual speedo cable).

Any help in sourcing one very much appreciated, p.s. I've already read that the Lockwood conversion facia is poor quality so am actually looking for a full on 160 mpg speedo. Thank you.

500E speedos are hard to find, but 400E speedos are pretty common. The only difference is the shift point indicators will be off (most people would never notice), and of course you'll need to use an electronic conversion box to adjust for the USA-spec 2.24 gears vs the 2.82 gears in the 500E. This would be the easiest and cheapest retrofit.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

:welcome5:

I am from UK and have a few spare w124 clusters - including V8 ones. PM me if interested in details of tnem and welcome to the forum!

Welcome!:welcome: I have a spare 500E cluster i may part with. It shows some fading and 178,000 miles. I will be replacing the odometer gears after i swap it out.

C'mon, stop being modest. In your case, I am sure "few" = several hundred, if not thousands.

I think I have about 15 spare :oldman: But most are pedestrian units. And some w201 on top of that just because. (For when I get a Cosworth! 2021 plan to add one to the fleet)

Could a pedestrian W124 unit be converted to E500E specs by a speedometer restoration shop?
Yes, if they know what they are doing. The donor MUST be from another V8 car, as only V8's had electronic speedos.

1800 for E60 cluster? Is there a difference to "normal" 500E?

They should be the same. Can you post a close-up photo of the speedometer from a normal Euro-spec 500E with 260kph speedometer? Even better, a photo of the decal on the back of the 500E Euro speedometer. The K-number of the speedo for sale appears to be 5585, if that is the same as a stock 500E, and the shift point indicators are in the same location, the item for sale is not any different.

BTW, note the date code of 7/92, indicating this cluster is not from a factory E60. Could be from a 500E AMG 6.0L conversion though.

:update:

Based on other photos on the interwebz, it appears that €1800 cluster shown in post #9 is bone-stock E500E, Euro-spec / KPH.

Interestingly, I also found the UK and USA speedos are very slightly different. They have different part numbers, and the UK number is really hard to locate in the EPC. The upshift markings are a few mph different between the USA and UK faces. Someone with a UK cluster would need to remove it and check the K-number to see if it matches USA (which it should). Really weird that the UK speedo is different!

Anyone know the mathematical formula for the K= value? Can't convince any Speedo shops to modify the speedo electronics to adjust speed. And, no, I do not want to use any module like a DD. Already tried that with bad results from EFI messing with my other gauges.

The K-value affects not only the speedometer, but also the odometer. That is why USA and Euro specs 036's have different K-values, despite the speedometer needle moving the same amount for a given speed.

A converter box (YellowBox, Dakota Digital) should cause *zero* problems on the 034/036, because the signal is only modified between the source (transmission) and the receiver (speedometer input). There's no effect on powertrain modules. I've done this to adjust for different gear ratios with zero problems.

Where it gets tricky is if you change the speedometer range, i.e. make a 190mph speedo face... then the speedo and odo have to be adjusted separately! I was able to get a VDO shop in SoCal (?) to do this years ago. Wasn't cheap, but they did it correctly, ±1% or so verified afterwards via GPS and freeway mile markers.

@JC220, I have obtained top-secret drone footage video evidence that details your stores massive hoard. Here it is. Please stop hiding the real number with your fake "15 spare" cover story. :thumbsup2::):omg:

My only question is how did you get this footage? I'll have to dig a bigger moat around the hoard again!

The photo is not dissimilar to reality actually :5150:

i can make new speedometer scale pads for both us version and european version
