FOR SALE USED E500 / E420 ETA, ASR-capable, 2001 date, $550 or $150

I have for sale a used ETA that is suitable for all E500s, as well as E420s with ASR.

This is the factory 000 141 94 25 part number ETA, manufactured in February 2001. That means it will have the "good" (non-biodegradable) wiring.

I will sell this ETA for $150 shipped, as-is, or $550 shipped and refurbished by Don Roden of RFC Electronics in Alabama.

$400 of the $550 cost is for Don Roden to remanufacture / refurbish it to perfect working condition. Otherwise you can use it as-is.

This ETA came out of a 1994 E420, and has the CORRECT "short" cable with smaller round connector used with the later cars, NOT the pancake connector used with 1992 and early 1993 cars. If you have a 500E or a 400E, it's likely that this ETA will NOT work for you, but you will need to check your connector underhood to be sure.

This is NOT an ETA from a W140 model with the significantly longer cable. It is 100% a proper ETA from a 124 chassis.

ETA will be shipped via US Priority Mail.

Ideal to have as a spare, or if needed as a replacement. Again, you can either pay up front to commission me to get it refurbished through Don Roden, or you can buy it for cheaper and pay Don yourself.

I connected this ETA to my car, and it DOES work in current "as-is" condition. Meaning that it connects, buzzes when power is applied, and the throttle plate turns with application of the gas pedal. I have not opened up this ETA, so I cannot guarantee that the interiors (gears, solenoids and what-not) are in perfect condition, but IT DOES WORK and the wiring is well past the biodegradable stage.

If you pay for the $550 refurbished model, then it is guaranteed and 100% tested to work, and Don Roden will stand behind it.

Cheers,
Gerry

A couple of notes:

  1. Pretty much any ETA that is original production (1996 or prior) is going to have the "biodegradable" wiring inside, and in the cable. This is particularly true for 1992-1995 production.
  2. ETAs like this one that are produced after 1996 are going to have updated wiring, which does not degrade. This eliminates probably the most common and major issue relating to the reliability of the ETA. A 2001 date code ETA is very definitely going to have the updated wiring.
  3. Just because an ETA has updated wiring (more recent production), DOES NOT MEAN that it is going to be 100% fine, all of the time. There are gears, solenoids and potentiometers inside the ETA that can and do wear out with age and use. These components are 100% independent of the wiring, and are found in all ETAs. Whether or not the ETA's components are worn out can often only be determined by testing; other times it is apparent through malfunctions.
  4. An ETA that is seemingly working OK, can still be bad. I sent my original ETA in to Don Roden this past summer. The wiring was bad (I knew that as soon as I'd removed it), but in testing it, Don found that there were a couple of issues with the internal components. Even though this was the case, the ETA was seemingly working fine, and I was suffering no running issues with my car as the result of the ETA. This goes to show that there can be hidden problem with ETAs (besides the obvious issue of internal and external wiring) and these issues can only be determined by appropriate testing. This testing is beyond the scope of pretty much anybody here, and should be done by a professional.
I am only making the statement that in connecting this ETA, it made the correct and expected sounds and motions. I have NOT installed it and run it on my (or any other) car. I cannot 100% guarantee that it is working as designed. That said, I know for sure that there is no wiring issue with it, and I would not hesitate to put it on my car and use it as a spare unit. I fully expect (but cannot confirm 100%) that it is working like it was when it was new.

This is why I am offering it for a resonable price ($150), or for more money ($550) as a professionally tested, refurbished, and 100% guaranteed working unit. You can pick what you want -- either buy it for the $150 and try it yourself, or buy it for the $550 and know that there is a warranty on it.

The main thing is that this is the proper part and cable length for a W124 chassis. This IS NOT a W140 unit with the longer cable.

Hopefully this answers some questions that people are having about the unit.

I can tell you that if your ETA is an original unit, and you have more than 100K miles on your car, there is a VERY high probability that your ETA needs repair/refurbishment -- at minimum for only the internal and external wiring -- but even a good change that there is additional refurbishment and repair needed for the internal components, as I found with my 140K mile original ETA.

Really hoping this is still available. Bought a 1994 E420 recently with the dreaded limp mode issue. I have searched and searched for the 0001419425 ASR Throttle Body and can’t find one anywhere for a reasonable price. I will buy your $150 throttle body asap. Can’t wait to fix and enjoy my car

Yes, ETA = electronic throttle actuator. The 400/E420 cars use the same ETA as long as the 400/E420 cars have ASR. The plugs, are different according to model year, not engine size. 92 and 93 years have a different plug than 94/95 years

Hi Gerry, I wanted to ask you if it is still available? I have a 94 E420 with ASR and mines up crap creek. Please let me know if you still have it. Thanks!

Happy to sell it for $150 shipped. I would recommend that you connect with Don to have it rebuilt (mainly internal components that tend to wear out).

Thank you for getting back to me Gerry, I get paid on Friday and I will get a hold of you with $$, and we can put a fork in this deal. Driving my car the way it is now is like having a gal who don't put out, no damn fun at all!!!

It is an abbreviated version of that, along one long wall, yes.

Although I have plastic bins on the top shelves, and large & bulky items like interior lining parts, leather door panels, spare lower body cladding panels, front lower LCAs, struts and hydro-legs, and tie rods/steering shocks on the bottom shelves from the knees down. Someday I'll post some photos in my PWNER thread, though there is more organization to be done.

Thank you!!
I just went down for the third time and scoured my shelves and bins. I cannot find that pipe for the life of me. I KNOW that I have it because I repaired the old one very solidly, and made it a point to save it. And I found where I brought all of the other removed parts from my 2020 COVID project down to the basement, as I have not yet filed them in the appropriate places. But I CANNOT find that pipe at this point, despite looking three different times.

I will look one more time every tonight. If I can't find it, when I do you will have first dibs on it.

Separately, I did find the ETAs and I have one right and ready to go.

That looks like the McKesson pharmaceutical plant that I worked on in Clear Lake Iowa! (Where Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper's plane crashed) Now that's a big ole warehouse there.

ah damn! All good, I'll be waiting patiently. Thank you for the effort

Jerry, do you still have this? The ETA on my 92 034 is factory still and it would be good to have a spare. Cheers

This ETA is still available, but the price for it (given relative rarity) is $350 shipped. Unfortunately the rebuild from Don Roden is no longer available.

For $550, the original price of a guaranteed expert's rebuild was an excellent deal for this ETA. Sad how the market has changed in the past few years, on so many levels.

I only have this ETA plus one additional spare for the E500E and ASR-equipped 400E420s.

Gerry, thanks for this update. I would like to purchase this IF you can ship it to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Thanks @gerryvz

May I ask - to where are you sending yours off for rebuild? I had one ETA with the pancake connector rebuilt by Don Roden. My second ETA .... I was too late in getting that to Don. :-(.
Good question. Finding a supplier was tough post Don Roden. I had the non-ASR ETA in my 94 E420 that I sold to Alphasud40 serviced by Beckman Technologies in Durham NC. They calibrated, serviced and replaced the wiring in the ETA.

They did great work; cheaper than Vlad of Restoreyourmercedes.com (he wanted $800). Beckman charged $650 including shipping. They have ones on the shelf ready to go and you send back your core to be rebuilt. They include a return label for the core in the box which was convenient.

For my 92 400E, I'll have mine rebuilt for the incremental $300 for piece of mind. The ETA on my 500E was rebuilt a couple years ago, not sure by whom.

GLWS, Gerrry.

The problem with the Vlad and Beckmann refirbs, is that they don't replace the INTERNAL COMPONENTS of the ETAs. They just replace the wiring, which is of course the obvious thing, and for ETAs of a certain age, a major problem area.

BUT, given these ETAs are now 20 and 30+ years old, they have a LOT of wear and tear just from simple use -- nothing to do with the wiring. The internal electromechanical components such as potentiometers, switches and such also go bad, and these are very specialized and specially sourced components that the Beckmanns and Vlads of the world either don't have access to, or don't want to bother with. Doing the wiring is easy; doing the ENTIRE ETA is much more difficult.

This was the beauty of Don Roden, he focused on the ENTIRE ETA with his refirbs, and methodically tested and replaced the internal components as well as doing the wiring. He had sources for all of the parts. He also tested every single ETA he rebuild by mounting it on an actual car and driving it, as well as electrical bench-testing for proper function.

Can't get better than that. Don Roden retiring was a HUGE loss to the MB community.

From Beckman's webpage:

Throttle Actuator Reman Service

First, our actuators go through a media blasting process in order to clean off years of harsh grime and dirt. Most actuators suffer from degrading wiring, so that is often the first thing to be removed and replaced with new, Teflon-coated wires and brand new rubberized tubing. We also inspect, clean, or replace each potentiometer, switch, motor and gear to ensure it is above factory specifications.

Ahh, OK then. We'll see how their refirbs pan out over time! Thanks for providing this info.

I am very happy to send overseas. Perhaps you want to pay a bit more and get a fully refurbished Beckmann unit, though, per above? May be the way to go, honestly, since it seems that Beckmann says they replace everything that needs replacing. What I have is not actually tested on a car.

See highlight above. Seems they test (inspect) and clean, but only replace if a component has failed already - no proactive replacements.

I'm curious how they obtained the factory specifications and are able to go "above" them.

I will throw my .02 into the discussion. I think the refurbished ETA on the 034 I purchased from Ian has an issue. A rather strange one that I have yet to confirm with the scan tool. It’s on the list of things to do as I continue to sort the car. This car jumps off the line which I thought was a function of having a throttle cable directly act on the throttle plate. The ASR cars I have driven have a very typical German linear throttle delivery. Also when driving away from a stop and as you approach the target speed and lift the car will feel as it’s speeding up then abruptly go into decel cutoff. Very strange sensation. I have so far only adjusted the throttle cable but this has to changed the characteristics. I know my 400SE did not have this condition. My plan to to pick up a spare ETA and swap at some point if I don’t see anything on the scan tool data stream.

Good to know, I'll look out for this issue while I'm driving the car this week.

Alphasud, is your 034 a non-ASR car? What you describe is pretty odd for non-ASR.

Ok let me check with them - thanks Gerry

Yes, initially I thought it was because it was a non ASR car but the more I drove it I realized something seemed off. This car launches harder than the ASR 034 car I owned and the non ASR W140 with the 2.82 final drive. I suspect the TPS has an issue or its calibration is not right and the throttle plate is being opened by the throttle motor just off the idle stop and not the throttle cable. Also experience an idle hunt at times + or - 100RPM when hot.

Four years after I installed it, my Don Roden refirb has performed absolutely flawlessly.

And note that my ETA was working just fine (no issues outwardly) when I sent it to him back in 2020. I knew the wiring had gone, but it also had not been disturbed, so the cable wiring was still working fine.

But after Don got my ETA, he emailed me to let me know that there were a number of internal components that were either not working correctly and/or in need of replacement, which he rapidly did. I was surprised to hear this given that I had no issues prior to removing it from the intake manifold.

My point is that even if an ETA is working, it may be in need of repair on the inside. Per my message above.

Don was a former career-long MB tech, so he (sort of like @Klink) knew a lot of the "secret sauce" stuff on dealing with the older MBs, and had a lot of informational access and institutional knowledge that no non-MB employee could have or get.

I'm not so sure that Beckmann or RestoreYourMercedes would have all of this knowledge or access......
