FOR SALE W124 E60 AMG Shocks - Japan Yahoo

Saw this auction on Japan Yahoo - set of F/R AMG W124 E60 shocks.

Used set but look to be in nice condition. Below is a translation of the auction listing. Currently 1 bid with the Auction ending Sunday morning US Eastern time. Current JPY.USD FX rate is around 0.006, so 400,000 JPY is about $2,400. Add in all the fees and shipping, estimate $3,200 or so.

HOWEVER, getting shocks shipped is a whole other issue. My Japan auction intermediary won't ship shocks - which is stupid because any car that is air freighted (collector cars) all have 4 of them....

This machine translation is meant for reference only. In case of any discrepancies, the Japanese text is always the final authority.

W124 AMG 500E 6.0 AMG E60 AMG genuine shock used
The condition is in good condition. No oil leaks etc. are found. There is still damper compression.
It was in normal use when I removed it, but please understand that it was removed, wrapped in plastic wrap, and stored for a long period of time before bidding.
It's probably quite rare, so why not take this opportunity to get it?
We also sell other AMG parts.

Nice find! I may be overly suspicious, but don't the decals look a little too fresh / new compared to the condition of the shock/strut body? Shouldn't there be more patina on the decals? Maybe not, just seems slightly odd.

Also, an Instagrammer in eastern Europe was listing these same items for sale in a "reel" for $4500 (not sure if USD or EUR). Seems the same guy has been doing this for a long time - finding rare parts for sale in Japan or elsewhere, and listing them for sale at a steep markup when he does not have the items in his possession. Click here for a previous example from 2017 with a $750 swaybar offered for a mere $2k. Buyer beware on the socials...

Scammers scour the internet for pictures of highly sought after car parts, then list them for sale on social media using fake or stolen accounts. They request PayPal FF or Western Union and most of these for sale posts turn off comments due to most people seeing the fraud and calling out the scammer. Nevertheless, people still fall for these scams.

The Seller has a decent rating on Japan Yahoo - 738 reviews and 98% thumbs up. I will say that over the past 15 years, I have done at least 200 purchases from Japan Yahoo and only one time was I dissatisfied - got a URO brand part instead of OEM MB that was not disclosed in the auction.

Wouldn't the shock tubes have an MB part # on them? I know the Bilstein AMG shocks for the W126's had the AMG logo and an AMG/126 part # engraved in the tubes. Anyone here ever handled these W124 AMG shocks? Absent the AMG stickers, do these shocks look the same as normal .036 shocks?

I cannot recall seeing PN hardstamping on any AMG shocks for the 036. Just seen it once on a set for the W201.

I believe the AMG Shocks are standard Sachs with different valving and, of course, the most expensive part - the genuine AMG sticker.
Pre Merger AMG, or at least before the advent of the post 1995 models. was a small company operating on a more or less shoestring budget. That they would expend money on tooling for a completely new shock flies in the face of how cheap (frugal...) they were.
I studied both my Pre Merger cars, the 126 Wide Body and the 89 500SL - 6.0 and the WB in particular had all the engineering expertise of a backyard California hot rodders creation in the early 1950's.
The access to one of the rear spark plugs was particularly noteworthy. Couldn't remove the plug, no problem, call Wolfgang and have him bring over a 25mm hole saw and point him towards the firewall. Oops, too small, anyone have a 30mm wooden dowel rod? Instant access....
A piece of cheesecloth was less porous than the early heads not to mention the engine compartment insulation had all the fireproofing of barn full of hay after a 3 month draught.
Fortunately Jono has addressed all these issues and did what A + M in G did not.
