What am I doing wrong? Why must I log in repeatedly and find my writing gone?

Gentlemen,

Often I will be logged in and attempt to post something, usually a reply. Then when I go to submit it, I get the message that I must refresh the page and log in. Then if my text even reappears at all, half or more of it is missing.
Why should I have to log in again when I was already logged in? What disables my log in while I'm writing? I just had this event sequence blow up a long reply that I actually thought was pretty good, and I'm almost too pissed to go back and redo it.

I told myself that I wouldn't take this on line thing too seriously once I placed a toe in, and now here I am VIOLENTLY angry because my post got blown up!

I guess this is how addictions start. Dammit!
:banghead:

I run into the same problem. I think the system times you out after a certain period of inactivity. What I usually end up doing, if it's a long post, is finishing typing, then I highlight it and copy to my computer's scratchpad (Ctrl and c). Refresh the browser at the top using that circular arrow and that will take you to a login page. Once you log in again, go to the reply button as if you were replying for the first time, then paste your reply with Ctrl and v.

I have lost a lot of long posts by not copying first.

It just did it to me again when I replied to your running fault thread.

I always mean to do the copy/paste thing, but I forgot and now I'm pissed to the max about it.

I'm sure this also extends to my comprehensive computer illiteracy. I mean I was disappointed when I found out that "Broadband" wasn't Courtney Love's new group.
And don't even get me started on computer sex!
Why the hell didn't somebody tell me there's a FAN in there? I suppose there are a few things even more embarrassing in an ER, but there can't be many. I told them it was an accident with a pneumatic stapler. Sounded more macho.
I tried it again once after a lonely night with too much absinthe and when the screen said "insert small floppy" I was so insulted I just smashed the damn thing!

Sounds like you have a browser issue. I'd recommend you use Firefox or Google Chrome, or if on a Mac, use Safari as your browser.

What? You're suggesting that there could be a problem with this Microsoft stuff ! How could that be... Just FYI, It happens to me on Safari, too, but that's on my IPhone. Regarding the IPhone, what's to know about this "taptalk" or whatever that comes up. Should I try it? In the meantime, I'll just have to be more careful to save my stuff before I press "submit" in case it gets blown up.

Thanks!

Colonel, Tapatalk is free forum reader software for iPhones and android phones and tablets. Works well. Get it.

FYI, I have always had the problem with getting kicked off while writing long posts and I'm using Firefox and Windows 7. I have it set to block cookies, not track anything and not remember my password. That could be what's causing it.

Yes...I run all manner of flash/add block and ghostery...unless I click "remember me" I'll get kicked out in a matter of 15 minutes. Clicking Remember me will Only keep my logged in as long as I maintain that browser window. Once I close/shut down I will need to log in again etc, etc..
I'm running FF on a very stripped down version of XP..slowly migrating my way towards Linux.

You shouldn't have to re-login ... EVER. The system should, as long as you have checked the "remember me" box at the top of the page, remain logged in until you explicitly log out. I have tested this in numerous platforms and browsers and it works the same on all of them -- Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, etc. And including Firefox, Internet Exploder, Opera, Safari, Chrome browsers.

If the system is not remembering you between sessions, and requires you to log in either frequently or every time you log into the site, then you have a browser configuration issue and it is evidently deleting cookies between sessions. You need to reconfigure your browser to either retain all cookies or white-list this site's cookie so that it is not deleted.

Not remembering your login is NOT an issue with the software on this site. It works perfectly and I have used it daily since we switched over to the vBulletin software in July of 2011 with no issues.

Cheers,
Gerry

I'll check my settings. I'm sure that's what's going on. I'm curious though. If one doesn't check the "Remember Me" does it log you out after a time? If so in that case, how long is a log in valid for? Not the end of the world, just curious.

If you don't check remember me, then it will log you bout after that window or browser is closed.

Nearly every site that requires you to login needs cookies to work. Either that or you would get URLs like http://www.500eboard.com/forums/?phpsessionid=[longstringofgarbage] OR you get these login issues. If you really don't want anything left behind, use incognito mode. Then the browser takes care of everything and closing the browser cleans up everything - but at least you stay logged in.

Besides, our governments really don't need cookies to trace our online behavior, so I'm wondering why you would block ALL cookies... HTTPSEverywhere is a much better add-on to start with.

Tapatalk works well ! Even alerts you when your post gets quoted ( if u have it set this way of course) and PMs. Now you'll be truly addicted ! Lol .!

I use a VPN and change it often, so I'm accessing the Internet from a different IP address (not mine). I also reset my DSL modem every few days to acquire a different IP from Century Link. Maybe it's a bit of paranoia but why make it easy for these fascist, globalist pigs at NSA. I have no complaints about having to log in repeatedly. It's my decision not to accept cookies, so I just copy and past when I go to publish a post. If I had to log in ten times a day--which I have done at least that amount today--it is still worth the visit to this site.

Fremdscham und Schadenfreude. They're what make the world go around !

Tip Of The Day:
WHen typing an epic post... before you click "Submit", copy the entire post to your clipboard. Better yet, paste it into Notepad for extra security. Then click "post reply". If the browser or forum chokes and your post vanishes, you've now got it saved in the clipboard to easily paste & re-post. Another alternative is to author the epic posts in Notepad, Word, or whatever your favorite text editor is. When ready, copy/paste into the forum, and make sure the post appears before closing the text editor app. Just be careful with the copy/paste if you are adding URL's... nothing worse than thinking your ten paragraph post is safely in the clipboard, then pasting and finding out there was just your last URL. Woooops. Aren't computers great?

I will do that from now on. My epic post went to epic fail...

Guys ... the forum is also set up to "auto-save" all text being entered as a reply -- I believe about twice per minute. If you do get logged off, you should be able to log back in and "restore" the auto-saved text. You should see the little yellow flag pop up saying "Auto-Saved" in the lower right corner of the "Quick Reply" window if you are using that, about every 30 seconds.

To restore text, when you log back in you should see a button in the lower left corner of the Quick Reply pane (of the same thread, if you go back to it) that says "Restore Auto-Saved Content" and this should allow you to restore what you typed in.

See attached photos (click on them to enlarge).

Cheers,
Gerry

Yes, I saw that going on as I talked away then manually edited (this was on an iPhone using Safari, BTW). Since I saw the "Auto saved" flash up happening all along, I had no worries. Then when I went to submit, I had to do the re-login routine, clicked on the "restore auto saved" and found only about a third of it, and with out a number of edits, so it had stopped auto storing for some time. So I'm sure I've also got browser, etc. issues going on.
Thanks for all the feedback on this.
