Windshield Repair Metro Detroit?

While driving home from the airport on I-275 my windshield was nailed by a golf ball sized rock. Can anyone recommend a reputable shop in the area?

Hagerty recommended Safelite. Have you had good luck with them?

Whoa, that's a big hit! Sorry to see but the upside is you will have a nice new windshield. I've been too long away but you might go to a local body shop you trust (Motorwerks?) and ask for a recommendation. They should know who's good if someone here does not.

It's been ten weeks and I finally received confirmation that an OEM windshield has arrived stateside. Good news for anyone waiting for one.

MotorWerks will have it replaced this Wednesday.

Max, when you say OEM, do you mean Genuine Mercedes from the dealership?

Awesome! Any chance you can check the box/label for a country of manufacture, and also a brand name of the glass? After they went temporarily NLA, there was some concern about MB switching sources.

:wormhole:

I have one on order and I was told they are from PGW. There were initially 5 available and all were spoken for. There is now another batch on its way in the next month that is supposed to fulfill all outstanding orders.

I wonder what the quantity is on the second batch. Sounds like awfully small numbers - I'd think they would keep a few dozen on hand, these have to be common replacement items, even now!

Did not get a chance to check the packaging. Does this photo help identify?

PGW is the manufacturer. I am curious where it was made... speculation was that it could be right here in US of A.

:klink:

I was able to confirm that it was Made In The U.S.A.
AWESOME. Thank you sir! A related question is, if the OE glass is any different/better than PGW's aftermarket glass. That may be difficult or impossible to find out without getting a snitch from inside the factory though.

Still waiting for my replacement windshield to arrive. But wanted to know if there were suggestions on exactly what should be replaced along with the windshield? I am going to have Safelite install the new one (talked to a Safelite installer who was in my neighborhood installing a new windshield for a Porsche 911 GT3) and want to have all necessary / suggested replacement parts available at time of install.

Windshield finally came in and I picked it up at the dealership this morning. Now I need to determine what parts should be replaced with the new windshield.

. . . Now I need to determine what parts should be replaced with the new windshield.

At a minimum, you will need a new molding that runs along the bottom of the windshield and into which the rubber weatherstripping attaches. Sorry, don't have a part#, IIFC, its about $50.

I've never been able to find a place that sells this piece separately. Where did you buy it? The piece should be included with a new dealer windshield; for aftermarket glass vendors you need to make sure to specify for 94-95 model and glass "with hardware", according to my glass guy. Most of the time they screw it up, don't have the extra piece, and re-use the old one which is always, and I mean always, cracked and buggered so it won't hold the rubber in place.

Can you identify which part you are referencing based on the parts pictures below? (first is from the EPC and second is from online parts diagram).

Dave is absolutely correct, comes with OE dealer windshield, which is where I got mine from (FWIW $340 in 2014). Molding came pre-installed IIRC. Sprnova, I believe that its #35 on the first diagram, though its difficult to tell from the diagram.

#35 in the diagram is the small rubber seal for the upper edge the early-style 2-piece trim pieces used through late 1993 (USA model year) production. Not what we need for the late wiper rubber trim, which needs the extra plastic channel attached to the bottom of the windshield. This design was phased in late in pre-facelift production, despite the EPC stating it was a break at 93/94 model year, I owned a 124.128 (B99xxxx) which had the late setup from the factory. My 93 500E is B93xxxx and has the early style.

:klink:

BTW, the channel is not shown in the EPC. I believe it is ONLY available with a new windshield, which is a shame. Photos attached.

Yes, unfortunately, channels are only available free of charge with all new MB 124 windshields. Interestingly enough, a person or two over the years has a mistakenly thought that their new glass somehow had the "wrong" channel because the channel is shipped an insert inside of it that protects it from damage during shipment and handling, etc...

Hi Folks, new to this forum. Daily driver is a 94 E320 so no V8 but lots of good chassis info here. I had a factory windshield installed about 2 yrs ago. Plastic channel does indeed come with a new windshield; not sold separately. Sprnova, you stated Safelite was doing the install. Is this the installer your local dealer uses? Best to find someone experienced with W124 chassis.

Regards,

Peter Weissman
