Windshield wipers turned on by themselves

I was driving along the highway today and my windshield wiper turned on by itelf just as I went over a small bump (barely noticeable so I'm not 100% sure the bump had anything to do with it). It wouldn't turn off by turning the switch on the stalk, but it would speed up from turning the stalk switch. I was on the highway so it was a few minutes before I could stop the car, but turning it off and then on again didn't fix it. Wiper was still on even though the stalk was off. Then, by itself, it turned off. When I bought the car, the previous owner told me the wiper wouldn't turn off once after he sprayed the windshield with the washers.

I just tested the wiper now and it's fine.

Any ideas? Faulty stalk?

Could be the beginnings of failure of the wiper interval relay.....

Thanks Gerry. I searched for wiper interval relay and got this thread:

Before posting I did some searches but didn't find anything. Clearly I'm not very good at finding search terms.

I'll check out the relay and maybe clean up the pins.
