My 94 E420, approximately 170K kms on it.
Small mods: 92 LH module, no cats (they were plugged and removed) otherwise stock exhaust, lightweight Tolliman wheels. Otherwise completely stock, just in good tune.
Mission Raceway Friday night, sea level.
Passes in order:
15.332 @ 94.73
15.281 @ 94.48
15.085 @ 95.11

And!

14.819 @ 96.40!

I was pretty happy seeing a 14!

Very nice! And, Malachite with forged CLK's too! Last time I was at Mission was, uh, 2010 IIRC. Yup, it was:

If you go back, in between rounds pull the airbox to help cool the engine & airbox, and run the heater on max for 5-10 mins or so after you park. Try to get the coolant temp around 60°C before pulling into the lanes, which should be possible if there's an hour or more between runs, and/or if it's cool ambients. Finally, to improve your reaction time with the tall 2.24 gears, hit the gas just before the third yellow illuminates. You may have been "going on green", which is too late for these cars with tall gears & tight torque converters.

Thanks. This event was Friday night street legals, no eliminations. They were running the tree all 3 yellow at once, then the green. Yes, my reaction time could be better.
I was mainly looking for the car time though. It was bloody hot on Friday, my last run was after dark, the car and ambients had cooled off by then.
Although an E420 is usually in the 15's, my gut said this one could do 14's, just wanted to prove it to myself (and bragging rights!)
It was fun. Only MB that night, lots of other cool cars though.

Seriously? All 3 ambers lit simultaneously? That's a "Pro Tree", and is rarely used for street cars, and almost never for the typical "street legal" events. Normally they should have what is known as a Sportsman tree or "Full" tree, where each amber lights for 0.5 seconds followed by the green 0.5 sec after the last amber as seen in the emoticon/smiley in my previous post.

Actually, on a Pro tree, those RT's aren't bad at all! You can't get much better without deep staging, which is tricky, and also slows your ET by a tenth or more depending how deep you rolled into the staging beams.

A good-running USA-spec 034 should be capable of high 14's when running correctly, as you proved with your car. Other tips... remove the spare tire & empty the trunk, and arrive with 1/4 tank of fuel. This will remove over 100 lbs of ballast which makes a measurable difference. Assuming the engine is ~60C, cool ambients help, but the M119's can also respond to barometric pressure (higher is better). And when it gets too cold, wheelspin can become an issue, lowering tire pressure helps but you don't want to go below 18-20 psi with street tires. After that you need stickier tires.

Nice to see someone else going to the track! Not many owners do... which is a shame, it's really a lot of fun, and not expensive either.

Yes, 3 amber then green. My best reaction time was a .327. By that last best run it was getting late, I was getting tired.
I had emptied my trunk, arrived with about 1/2 tank of fuel.
I'm on Vancouver Island, a bit of a trek to get to Mission, probably won't again this year, maybe next year.
I just remembered that I have a 500E 2.82 diff on hand, winter swap project? Be curious to see what that does to my times!
It was fun. I grew up in the muscle car Era, the drag strip was a regular pilgrimage.

Insane. If they do that again, I'd ask a staff member (preferably the track manager) why the hell they are running a Pro tree for amateur hour street races. Ridiculous. I've never heard of that before. In 15+ years racing at Firebird in Boise, the Pro tree is only used is for a specific class a few times per year. Maybe it was a mistake and the staff didn't know how to fix it.

The 2.82 diff should drop your ET's by a lot, at least a half-second, probably more. However you may have issues with wheelspin, depending how well the track surface is prepped. Some tracks don't want to spend the $$$ for traction compound for street races. With 2.82's and grip, it could run low 14's, at the same mid-90's trap speed. Note you can only use the 500E diff if your E420 has ASR.

My car does have ASR, so could try that diff. On my first pass, I had a little wheelspin, ASR kicked in. I paid closer attention to where I selected in the lane after that. I was ‘brakestanding’ the car trying to get a faster launch.
Good point, with other gears more of a possibility.

Assuming you are not doing a burnout, lower tire pressures until the wheelspin is eliminated. If you run 30-35psi cold on the street, try 28-26psi hot, and drop 2-4psi at a time. Drive around the waterbox if possible (last time I was at Mission, this wasn't an option) and make sure you are in the center of the lane when staging.

This primarily helps your reaction time and does little, if anything, to your ET. You'd get more ET improvement by being very careful to shallow stage, every time, per Bracket Racing 101.

Swap in the 2.82 ASR diff after replacing the side seals and re-sealing the rear cover (cheap insurance against leaks). Use a YellowBox or Dakota Digital correction module for the speedo. You'll love the gearing change, it transforms the car.
