AAMOF, I recently considered auctioning off my Guzzi gear. I tried on my jacket one last time for old time's sake. It fit like a lifelong leather glove. I changed my mind. It (and the rest of the swag) stays for now.

Back to Stealth Mode

Driving season is culminating. In anticipation of my upcoming last long distance drives, today was the day I swapped the 17" Monoblocks for the refurb'd 16" painted stock 8 holers shod with the Michelins from my old chrome rims.

I flogged the sh*t out on some of the Hinterland's back roads today like a Rallye car. What a blast! Listening to Frank Black: Teenager of the Year full blast (Divine Providence picked the album...I hadn't listened to it in decades).

Leaves, gravel & flotsam flying everywhere. The funny part was, I even sent a bunch of Hillbillys scattering for cover (them thinking I was the "Guy" coming to crush or collect on their backwood Meth lab debts). Shiny big bad black car coming in hot out of Nowhere. Whoo! Good Times.

One of the 2 Guzzis you mentioned was my first ride on a real road bike. I think it was the Ambassador. You make me want to put my stock wheels back on. Unfortunately they won't fit anymore and don't look as nice on the silver. Excellent.

Agreed! The summer of '89 I took my Yamaha FZ750 and rode to the Grand Tetons and had two cassettes loaded in my Walkman and routed into my Shoei helmet: U2's Joshua Tree and Pixies Dolittle. Blasting across Nebraska blaring Monkey Gone to Heaven.

Wheels look stellar!

The leaves have left. Its profoundly colder this evening with rumors of upcoming snow flurries. Now that my O2 sensor has been re-tightened, I gotta sneak out onto the motorway early tomorrow to try to recreate my recent LHM situation before the snow flies. Otherwise, after a final wash down, this year's enjoyable driving season is pretty much done for me.

Happy Ending?

I had a window of opportunity today to test the car regarding my recent LHM situation & then wash it afterwards.

The test seems a success...

...and the car always looks and feels better when it is clean. I have a random orbital & am actually looking forward to finally waxing this car for the first time of my ownership.

Captruff saves my MoJo!

I noticed a disturbing pattern forming towards the end of Summer. While festively driving around the Lake, the Chicks became less & less inclined to expose themselves to the outside world via the 500E sunroof.

For a while I was erroneously thinking it was something about me...

Then it all made sense when I discovered the front trim strip of my sunroof opening was missing a couple of screws! Oh why Me?! What to do Now??

Chicks HATE missing hardware. I was literally quaking in my Recaro with self-doubt until I remembered captruff was parting out some W124s. I explained the situation & he immediately express mailed some replacements. What a valued forum member!

Needless to say, I loctite-blued these into place. I never want to go thru that type of trauma again. :shitnot:

W124 Mania

The delivery of email gave me lots of reading to do. Some of the recent forum posts & discussions regarding the virtues of the venerable W124 product-line must have planted subliminal seeds in my mind...

While bushwhacking my way back to Civilization from the Boonies, I peripherally spied a familiar shape parked trail-side. A quick backtrack revealed a 1993 300CE...a rare sight indeed around here...more rarely seen than the elusive albino deer.

Blue with Camel interior & blue ragtop. 125K miles. Chrome arch accents & wheels. No dents, but a few knicks here & there. The ragtop is intact, but has two areas of contact point abrasion apparently from resting in the retracted position. Also a slight bit of door line droop.

Looks like the car was imported to the Hinterlands from Indiana. The interior is decent for its age. No apparent seat rips. Typical console wood cracking. Has an aftermarket audio head unit.

NA head lights. The hood could use a good color sanding or reshoot. I haven't had the VIN or a Carfax processed yet.

Took advantage of nice clearance prices from FCP for some “good to have” spares, including Meyle tranny filter kit, Behr radiator elbow pipe, 30A strip fuses, Mann air filter & Meyle strut dust boots/stop buffers.

The fuses & elbow pipe will go into the car's road kit. The others will all get installed in due time throughout the year.

I reinstalled the 17” Monoblocks for local driving. All but one tire held its air pressure over the off-season. No surprises were discovered when inspecting the wheel well regions. I will invest in new disc rotors. This is the last driving season for the current rotors (which came with my car purchase).

It's been a rather overall damp Summer, but the weather was decent for a drive this day. I’ve done minimal driving since bringing the car out on July 2. The ambient temperature displayed 82 deg F (28C), but felt like 92 F (33C) with the humidity.

I filled up on 91 octane ethanol-free premium & took a spirited drive up into the Hills on one of my favorite routes full of twisties & elevation changes. I had a ball averaging 80 mph (129 kph). The temp gauge kept a rock steady smidge over 80C (approx 180F). Both the car & I reacted nimbly in avoiding several blind curve centerline roadkill carcasses (which would have messed up the front bumper cover). :-o

As I powered down a certain section of road, I was reminded of a 500SL that was displayed for sale last year or the year before…son of a gun, it still was there! I double-backed & pulled over to check it out. I kept the 500E running with the hazard lights on. I was happy to hear the fans actuate.

The car has evidently not moved much since I last saw it (a leafy tree branch has been allowed to grow into contact with the rear window). 040 paint with camel interior. The car mileage is only 65,828 (105,940 km). Other than a cock-eyed passenger side headlight wiper, the body looks fine.

Hmmm…what would be more fun, this 500SL or last week’s 300CE? Regardless, it is quite unusual to see either around here these days & especially so close in succession.

of Loss & Gain

...I've also scored a rather new backup battery for the 500E (although it comes by the detriment of another car owner). You see, BMW-guy finally tapped out of ownership. NO MAS!

He had sidelined his 7-series for a season or two after his kid (who has since been excommunicated) screwed up a transmission control feature.

Equivalent to the frequency of a total eclipse of the sun, I discovered a similar model 740-series (different color) in the local boneyard & tallied the cost of all the items required to get his car back to a state of respectfulness. Via empathy, I'd get this car stripped & then install the items for him.

Upon later visiting his residence, I noticed the car was gone...I was informed that he had become so intensely sick & angry of his perpetually problematic situation that he sold the car to the same boneyard for chump-change. Ouch!

Anyhoo, I recently built a set of new steps for his back porch. He gave me his 3 month old Interstate car battery (made in Germany) as a bonus for a job well done.

...and he finally did what I suggested he should do when he first informed me he was seriously thinking about buying the BMW. He bought a Jeep.

PS: I didn't have the heart to tell him that on the day I originally visited, I was prepared to make an offer to buy the car from him if he wasn't interested in or couldn't buy the replacement parts.

Just a Guy in a Car

What a gorgeous day it was to be driving one of the best cars ever made. After toughing it out dockside with a cocktail, I trolled along (in the ‘fishing’ context) miles of Lake road at @ 5mph checking out all the views & properties.

Sun roof open. All windows down. Armored Saint, Saxon & Maiden playing discreetly. I also enjoyed politely waving at whomever I encountered along the way... just being friendly, but also curiously gauging reactions (if any) to me & the car.

Even at this speed, the temp gauge consistently maintains just above 80C. Concluding cottage lane, I then found myself rocketing back uphill to one of my favorite roads ever. An absolute roller-coaster ride in the 500E, whereby gravitational forces can become quite evident on the delightful year-old pavement.

What an adrenalin-rush. With the wider contact patch, the car responsively handles twisty-turny, upsy-downys just as well as motorways. Didn’t use much brakes…mostly just gas & gears. Then a few 100+mph bursts on the way home along a secondary road running parallel to the motorway. It was fun leaving motorway traffic behind.

I will never tire of this car.

I am a bit disappointed in myself, however. I’ve got 2 car cams still in boxes. I’ve yet to set them up. This particular road will be the first I will record once I operationally familiarize with them.

Safely back home heating the garage with the hood popped up. No traffic, problems, police or other concerning issues encountered along the way. A very enjoyable day.

The weather has been exceptionally warm & pleasant around here. Pleasant, like early June instead of the late October it truly is. Perfect for bringing Klaus the Heckflosse out & around this past weekend for its end of the year wash down.

The W111 front end is a timeless piece of automotive artwork. I will always love the way it looks.

The Shark returns

The V12 Dinan 850i Shark came into port today for a bit of brake light circuit fixing. A new brake light switch & bulbs took care of the situation.

Back out to sea it goes...although with only 33k miles, I think it spends most of its time lounging in its lair instead of marauding the open sea lanes. :bimmer:

It was another glorious Autumn morning today. I took the Cat to the veterinarian for a checkup. The office is 21 miles (34km) away from town. I chose this veterinary group because they have ties to Cornell University & charge only 1/3 the rate of the more local groups,...plus the 21 miles of roadway provides timelessly beautiful scenery, is recently paved, & is great for providing me a reason to drive the 500E.

This Cat drives in style. :coolgleam:

The Cat takes the ride quite well with her cage securely seat belted on the passenger side. I drove casually, but then there is one long, straight section that I love to open it up on. I very quickly punched it up to 100mph, but then backed off because the Cat started chiding me.

Chalk one up to feline intuition…about 3 miles down the road a County Sherriff was facing me from the other side of the road.

I was a good boy for the remainder of the trip, choosing scenery over speed while listening to the Cat warble about telling me so. :jono:

During this past summer’s annual State inspection, I noticed a few rear end items requiring further investigation. The most important item is a fissured inner axle shaft boot now making a grimy mess of everything within its lube-slinging radius. I need to determine if boot repair kit A1243500 737 is the correct item for this situation.

One of those heinous California shopping plaza speed bumps must've kissed the right spring control arm cover during previous ownership. The plastic cover (A1293520188) snaps over the control arm & is secured with 2 bolts. One of the cover’s bolt holes was split & pulled over the bolt meant to secure it. I removed the cover, assessed & cleaned it. It can still remain in service. If I want a new one, the part has been superseded by A2033520088.

Directly above the cover, the plastic bracket securing the brake sensor wire to the control arm was broken. Superglue failed to re-secure it. I’d like to replace the bracket but have so far been unable to determine the part number off the EPC. As is, there is no detrimental risk to the sensor wire.

Cap cover to rail A1295460064 is also MIA & must be ordered. The cables within the rail housing are secured with 3 zip ties.

With a recently purchased case of Brakleen, I got busy blasting and scrubbing the grime away until I could start seeing gleaming cad plated hardware and red torque marks. Looks like I now have a few more jobs besides my planned brake rotor replacements to do during the off season.

The garage window blackout curtains were no match for the unfathomable amount of Mojo emitted by the 2M1 W124 self-dimming rear view mirror with compass & Homelink. The masses are instinctively drawn by its presence. I realize the risks involved, but will not consider deenergizing the unit for the time being.

Today was the last sunny dry day before a supposed wintry mix weather front moves in. I uneventfully left the garage while no one was looking & had a final end of season carwash. I then took a casual low speed circuitous drive to calibrate the new mirror's compass. I took a certain pleasure in observing the compass display changing all along the drive. All systems go on all features!

I dig all the mirror features (especially the convenience of garage door control) & appreciate 2Phast making this mirror for my 500E.

Renew/replace with OE

I was fortunate to liberate some undamaged plastic parts from a donor car to replace the damaged or missing equivalents on my car. I was happily surprised to safely remove them in sub-freezing temperature.

The LCA cover & Rail Cap cover cleaned up well (they were partially covered in semi-petrified differential lube goo). I'll spray some preservative on them & store them in the 500E trunk until its time to install.

I'm a miner.
I mine Unobtanium.
The Unobtanium mining business has been severely depressed for too many years out here in the Hinterlands, forcing miners like me to travel farther for opportunity or partake other less satisfying activities.

But, as the Boy Scouts of America motto states, "Be Prepared"...you'll want to be ready when that opportunity to strike a motherlode manifests.

An opportunity arose & I am striking with near-surgical precision. It's been said a 400E is 80% of a 500E at 20% the cost. Well, I've laid claim & have been mining a 400E that is providing me well over 80% of the Unobtanium I've been questing for my 500E.

The #1 item on my list was obtained recently. A complete, near mint OE Premium Sound System has finally been reunited to my 500E. I now have all the missing pieces (including a 10-disc Becker Silverstone CD player). :hearts:

The most recent, previous owner of my car was a California Silicon Valley hot shot with a big check book. I thank this person for basically providing me a somewhat "brand new" old car when I bought it. However, one caveat that has bugged me ever since day one of my ownership was the PO's replacement of the original audio system with an aftermarket system (& the way it was "installed") that I promptly replaced with something of my own liking.

I vowed that over time, I would hope to reunite the car with its stock audio equipment. That day has arrived after 9 years of prospecting.

I am very happy & thankful to finally bring this load of Unobtanium home to the 500E where it belongs!

Congrats on your re-unification. IMHO nothing detracts more in the interior of these cars than an aftermarket head unit. It just never looks right!

Alt, if you want Period correct their TD line of head units.

Imho, the only aftermarket solution that never looked aftermarket.

Derf, since your car has an aftermarket setup... have you inspected to see if your wiring harness has been sliced & diced? If so, you may want/need to extract the harness from the donor.

FWIW... I plan to do a similar swap, except I'm pulling the stock harness/system from a 1994-95 model (1492 head unit), and installing the late setup in a 1993 500E to replace the 1432 which I love to hate.

And, +1 on what Jono said. I have the Nak CD-700 in three cars. LOVE that thing, especially the analog volume knob! No rotary encoder!

More Renew/Replace with OE

A couple years ago I was doing some engine compartment or transmission work that necessitated radiator shroud removal. I went thru an ordeal to remove & rectify some frozen shroud fasteners. No used replacement shrouds were readily available at the time, & I wasn't going to shell out for new. My "repaired" shroud would suffice until "whenever".

"Whenever" has arrived.

I am happy to have recently liberated a pristine OE replacement shroud assembly from a donor. I was even happier as I ever-so-carefully successfully removed its final fastener without issue.

Good ol' Jelmer. Our long lost Dutch Daddy posted this @6 years ago. I never really paid much attention to the underhood front seal (124 682 05 26) until now...now that I've liberated (actually, super-carefully extracted) a pristine example from a donor.

It looks almost new, & I removed it with all of its mounting tabs intact.

A chick magnet? I don't think so, but in this condition it is quite damn sexy in its own underhood kind of way

A good-to-have spare, especially when over $60 new.
