Rear Windshild

As in aftermarket like regular rear 124 glass because 500E is diff glass then other 124’s
 
There is no such thing as in aftermarket 500E specific rear glass. You need to go to dealer
 
950 isn't bad at all!

Now you can do like a lot of dealers were back in the day when they were fighting de-lam and just go std 124/single pane for a lot less...

Last time I checked (about 2 months ago) the rear windows were not available, none in US, none in Germany. It didn't specify NLA though, so maybe they will be producing more?
 
It appears that the front windshield part number has been superseded ... the new part number being 124 670 33 01 64, with a current MBUSA list price of $402.00. This windshield glass appears to be correct for all W124 sedans and S124 wagons, but NOT for A124 coupes and cabriolets.

Rear windscreen does appear to also be available from MB both in the US and Germany, part number 124 670 10 80, MBUSA list price of $1,220.

Pedestrian (single-sheet) W124 US-spec rear glass is part number 124 670 33 80, current MB list price $458.00.

...and goo too....but the gaskets suck and that's what I remember most...that and getting the trim out/off w/o bending it.

No, that is the difference... standard glass has fewer, thicker, more obvious defrost wires.

The compound glass used on the 036 has more, thinner, nearly invisible defrost wires.

Thanks GSXR! Are the connections to the deicer/defogger interchangeable between the two styles?
My 1992 only has one thin strand that operates. All the others have delaminated.

AFAIK, the two types are completely interchangeable. I really, really like the fancy 036 glass and personally wouldn't use standard rear glass in an E500E. I'd actually like to upgrade my ' 87 300D project car to the fancy glass, someday, if it's still available for less than a kidney.

Well, now that the cars are collector-ish, I’m a little wobbly on that. Back in the day, I used the conventional glass all day long. Got sick of re-replacing rear glasses every 3 years/40k miles. That was about as long as they would last in the central Florida heat and humidity. And yes, it is glued in and ALSO has gaskets and rain guttering. It’s a job you don’t even want to do once, much less over and over...

You guys are scaring me. Mine has a slight delam... something people will tell me not to worry about. And now I’ll be trying to convince those same people to do a hard job, in the FL heat and humidity. I’ve done it before, and often, tell them to do anyway what they tell me not to worry about. But I like to use that card sparingly. Ugh...

Dumb question: Is the outer edge of the fancy compound glass sealed, or open? If not sealed, perhaps running a bead of sealant around the edge of new compound glass might prevent or at least slow down the delamination issue in hot, high-humidity environments?

Actually, that is a good question. Later on after redoing a few of them, I did start running a few coats of the “glass primer” paint right on the edges to hopefully give them a little extra sealing. Don’t know if that did any good, or not. My own cars back in the day got the single pane along with a tasteful “does not look like window tint” window tint, applied BEFORE the glass was installed. Much easier that way....

Just to be clear, I was referring to the central Florida heat and humidity because that seemed to dramatically shorten the lifespan before visible delamination set in...

Yes. For those that did not know, in many markets other than the USA, the laminated fine wire back glass was an extra cost option across the 124 sedan model range. It was specified as standard for the E500E.
