M119 6.0 Question

Does anybody know if there are different versions of the M119 6.0 engine? I'm wondering if the M119 6.0 installed in an R129 (SL60) is identical to the one in the w124 (E60) or if there are differences (short deck vs. regular deck). And following on to that question, could a 6.0 from an SL be installed in the w124?

Depends which 129 chassis for the SL60.

If it's a 129.066 (500SL, 1990-92 USA model years) that would be a 119.960 tall-deck block with CIS injection, and shares almost nothing with the W124 short-deck engines with LH-SFI.

If it's a 129.067 with 119.972 engine (93-95 USA model years), either 5.0 or 6.0 displacement, yes it is 100% plug+play into a W124.034/.036 chassis.

If it's a 129.067 with 119.982 engine (96-98 USA model years), it can be done, but is NOT plug+play... a lot of parts have to be swapped around.

If you don't have a VIN of the donor, get a photo of the engine compartment. Easy to spot the CIS-E mechanical injection spiderweb at the back of the airbox on the .960, or lack of distributors on the .980 motor.

Thanks Dave, really appreciate the detailed response. I just started looking into a future engine swap and came across one in Germany. It’s already pulled from the donor car, but with the info you provided I’ll be able to ask the seller some more questions.

My car only has 91k miles on the clock and just has just gone through some servicing with Steve (timing chains, guides, ETA, etc.), so no pressing need to do anything right now, but a 6.0 engine swap is on the list, provided I can find a good one out there.

Have them send a photo of the engine number / serial number stamp. That will tell you most of what you need to know. Does the deal include the matching LH module?

Hi Dave,

Here is what I can gather from the info that the vendor finally provided:

Is that a "plug and play" candidate or a pretty involved effort?

It's not plug+play, but it's possible to do the coversion. You'll have to swap the intake, front head covers + distributors, valve covers, all 4 cam sprockets, ETA/MAF... and the flywheel... and probably some other things I'm forgetting.

Someone else on the forum did this conversion, I think on an AMG W210 E50 engine into a W124. Roger/TaxiDriver? If you can get the engine cheap enough, and don't mind swapping a bunch of parts, I'd be all over this.

Hi Dave,

As always, appreciate your expertise on this. Considering what a damn wild goose chase parts are, I am really scared of lumbering myself with an engine for which I cannot find all the conversion parts. To my mind the level of NLA parts has gotten to be really ridiculous for the regular cars. I don't even dare to think what it will be for E60 parts.

All the parts you need can be sourced from a used 119.97x engine, most even from a 4.2L (more commonly available). I think the only 5.0L-specific item would be the intake manifold? Definitely not worth buying new parts! You could swipe everything from your existing 5.0L engine.

Ok, thank you for explaining that to me Dave! Let's see if I can convince myself to go that route - might need some more convincing from Steve G.

:)
