1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E​

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is finished in Blue-Black Metallic over a gray leather interior, and power is from a 5.0L V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The car was reportedly acquired by the seller from his brother five years ago, and approximately 1k of the 133k indicated miles have since been added. Equipment includes a sunroof, heated seats, automatic climate control, a rear sun shade, and more. New rear control arms and bushings are said to have been installed last year, and the car passed a California emissions test in October 2019. This W124 is now offered with a clean Carfax report and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s business.​

The car was finished in Blue-Black Metallic (199U) with gray lower body cladding from the factory and was repainted in 2018. The seller states that the front bumper cover, headlamps, grille, and auxiliary fans were replaced by his shop following front-end damage under previous ownership. A rear badge from a later model has been added, and close-up photos of the lenses and trim are shown in the image gallery below. Blemishes are noted on the corner of the passenger side lower front valance.​

Factory 16″ eight-hole wheels are mounted with Michelin Premier A/S tires displaying 2018 date codes. The 500E featured Porsche-tuned suspension with a lower ride height than other contemporary W124 models. The seller states that the rear control arms and bushings were replaced in 2018 along with the front bushings.​

The cabin is trimmed in grey leather (271) (278) and features Recaro sports seats which are power-adjustable and heated up front. Additional amenities include a power sunroof, automatic climate control, cruise control, a premium sound system, and an electric roller blind for the rear window. Wear is noted on the steering wheel, and cracks are present in the center console wood.​

VDO instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a six-digit odometer showing just over 133k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the current owner. The 5.0L DOHC M119 V8 was factory-rated at 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, and drive is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. Additional photos of the underbody are viewable below. The January 2020 Carfax report lists no accidents or other damage and displays registration history in California from new.​

Everything about this car just feels...off, down to the peeling door jam SRS label.
The steering is def a flag, but oddly the passenger mirror boot looks brand new if it's original...odd.

You Guys shouldn’t be so picky. After all it is a 28 year old used car w/ 133K miles on it. It’s going to have some issues. I’m sure you can probably add some of Gerry’s deferred maintenance costs.

IMOP, Looks like it could be a nice example. BaT mentions front end damage but it was apparently not reported to authorities (not shown on auto check report. Maybe it would show up on a Car Fax).

Driver’s seat looks good and the door pocket is not peeling. That’s a good sign. Engine compartment looks clean (has a new overflow tank)

It would be nice to see some undercarriage pic but since it’s a SoCal car I wouldn’t be worried to much about rust. Leaks and other wear and tear could be present though.

We shall see shorty what the “Peanut Gallery” thinks.

This is very clearly a car with $10K of deferred maintenance and cosmetics. For the right price, I think this is a nice example. It has some quirks (the trunk ledge decal up by the trunk lamp is one oddity), but nothing on this car isn't fixable or couldn't be made right.

I will peg this car in this market at around $30K, give or take, with the top-end being $35K including fees.

It would be a nice driver example for someone to buy, enjoy and maintain. $30K would be a nice price to do this.

I get the trunk badge, but, also, I don't get it. I love the look of the old-school badges. A tiny part of me wants to put one on! But the rest says, never, ever mess with a badge.

What's interesting is, I haven't really paid attention to a boot lid decal in so long (mine is not), I looked at it oddly for about 1/3 of a second but it didn't appear immediately to me what was wrong with it ... until GVZ said this. Now I see it.

I think this car would be a solid buy at $20-23K. Then $15K to bring it up to where it needs to be, and it would be worth exactly what was paid out, and a solid driver that would hold its value.

What am I missing? The pics looked good. Drivers seat bolster almost looks new. That’s unusual for the grey leather.

Maybe in real life it doesn’t look so nice.

Completely repainted within last 2 years to the highest degree of Mercedes original standards. A refurbishment of the undercarriage suspension components has just been gone through by prior ownership. Servicing through the years has primarily been done by W.I. Simonson and Beverly Hills Mercedes authorized dealerships.

Grey leather interior is in wonderful preserved condition with supple leather showing correct patina and negligible wear. Perfect original dash-pad. Brand new black Mercedes floor mats. Sunroof equipped model. Original Becker works as it should. Nice wood showing minor cracks on middle consul. Door panels show beautiful condition. AC is in excellent working condition cooling properly on all fan speeds.

Undercarriage is as clean as one would expect having lived its entire life in California.

Superb drive quality. An absolute pleasure to pilot this amazingly engineered vehicle.

I've owned this car since Nov 2020 and after two years and 10k miles I've decided it's time to let it go to a new home.

I've made a few fairly easily reversible modifications, most of which are small quality of life improvements. They are as follows:

- New continental head unit w/ bluetooth (see pictures), still have original Becker deck
- 35% window tint with UV film front and rear
- 18" refurbished AMG wheels (still have original 16" 8 holes in decent shape)
- Brabus tip cat back exhaust system by this forum's very own 5thscaleracer

Otherwise the car is completely stock. It looks and drives beautifully and I always get at least a handful of compliments driving it around town every week.

Total maintenance spend in 2 years was approximately $6k, the most significant items being:

Nov 2020 new windshield wiper gear and reservoir
Jan 2022 rebuilt transmission
Feb 2022 new LH Fuel Injection control module ECU ECM Bosch
Nov 2022 new steering lock/tumbler assembly

Obviously I have receipts for all of this and a lot more.

It currently sits on Bridgestone Potenza RE-980 A/S (235 front 265 rear) that were mounted and balanced in January. Roughly 3-4k miles on them (the 8 holes also have relatively fresh rubber but unsure of the brand, but its decent).

The AC blows cold and everything works as it should. There are a couple minor cosmetic flaws I haven't brought myself to deal with. One is a small dent in the right rear fender from someone winging it with their door pretty hard a few weeks ago. The other is a small tear in the left rear seat. I think it's from shoving my bike in there a couple times last year. At any rate these two things are highlighted in some of the pictures.

The car has been maintained by Stepke Imports for the entirety of my ownership.
