Car Cover for 500E

Last spring on 500Ecstacy, there was discussion about car covers and it was noted that Performance Products had a 99-795 cover that was specific to the 500E. Unfortunately, they no longer seem to carry that cover, so I am starting pretty much from scratch looking for an outdoor cover. They still have the 99-796 cover for the W124, but I was hoping to find one specific to the 500e.

Griots has 92430 that appears to be generic for the W124 cars for $235 (plus shipping). Or should I go with a generic W124 cover from the dealer, even though it may be a little snug? If I do so, is it so snug that it will compromise the waterproofing? Both are Noah fabric.

Any other suggestions or comments?

I use a standard W124 factory MB cover on my 500e, it fits and looks fine, although it does fit a little tight. The fitament won't affect the water resistance of the cover.

If your spending that much on a cover, seems logical to get a 500e specific cover, but your chances of finding a standard W124 cover used are much higher, think I paid $70 for mine.

That is exactly what I am looking for, but it appears they no longer carry it. I have tried the 99-275 p/n, along with all the others in the 500Ecstacy thread, and I tried using their fitment guide as well. No problem finding a genuine MB Noah cover for the W124 from Performance Products at $246 plus shipping, but no genuine MB cover for the 500E.

They do offer the custom covers from Cover King, with the Stormproof going for $250 plus shipping.

I bought the exact same cover for my 500E from Performance Products. Came in a MBZ parts box and everything, even a MBZ storage bag for it. So with all the embroidered Mercedes livery on it I believe it's the factory cover, same style and fit as the factory cover on my neighbors SL600, I had to wait 5 weeks to get it tho.

Understood. Btw, is it worth contacting Covercraft directly and see if they have the covers for 500E or at least the cover with the OMB660-18 part number; or maybe anoter authorized Covercraft retailer has them? Home www.covercraft.com and www.carcoversplus.com for discontinued items.

I bought a coverking stormproof car cover from performance products. Fit and finish was good, but it " breathes through the seams" ie. LEAKS...

I told them I am glad that they don't make my breathable snowboarding clothes...LOL.

Griots garage has a very nice car cover, and as you know they are located in Tacoma WA and Ive seen the carcover on several of the cars there, and it seems pretty good in terms of keeping water off the car.

It depends on what you are doing.

A leaking cover is not good for me -- I need it to be waterproof.

I bought this car as a driver, and as such, it will end up being outside, sometimes for days at a time. I want to protect it the best way possible in case it rains and also from the sun.

The Griots cover appears to be a generic W124 Noah cover, so I would probably opt for the MB one unless there is some other reason to buy the Griots.

Yeah, that is exactly why I insulted their carcover making abilities. they told me the carcover breathes through the stitched seams...whatever! My snowboarding pants are breathable, but they are water proof thank God right?

Ridiculous! Anyway, they should rename the stormproof to something like, leaky carcover for $250...anyway, I am not happy about it.

Griots looks better than the noah in terms of waterproof. I had the OE noah 300E cover too.

I would have been quite dissapointed as well. I don't mind a cover that is not waterproof, as long as I bought a cotton one for in garage storage only. It is too bad that Cover King has not come through with a waterproof cover, since they are the only ones that I have found so far that make a cover specific to the 500E. I have to do a more thorough search.

Its description & actual appearance were real nice (cut more for a standard W124; not quite covering the lower skirting of the 500E as I would have preferred) but in reality it’s a real POS. Within 4 months of very mild weather exposure it was dramatically deteriorating right before my very eyes.

My $.02. Don't buy the Weathershield cover from Covercraft. It's a royal PIA. Unless it is dead calm or you have 2-4 people to help you put it on it's a slick piece of major annoyance. The underside is so slick that you cannot put it on!

Looking for a great alternative that doesn't cost a fortune...

Questions ordering Converking cover from Perfomanceproducts4benz

Has anyone ordered Coverking covers from performanceproducts4benz.com?

Its vehicle selection process is slightly different from the Coverking website where it asks, "Doesyour vehicle have OEM fender flares." I also spoke to one of the reps @ performancproducts, but I don't think the guy quite knew what I was talking about. Our 500e/e500's obviously have OEM fenders that are different from w124 OEM fenders, and I was not exactly sure if you need to answer "no" to the above vehicle selection question. Coverking website on the other hand has a selection that says "W124 bodystyle for 500E and E500 ONLY." I just don't want end up receiving a customized cover that is too tight around fender areas. Anybody know the correct part number for the 500e specific car cover sold by Mercedes? I thought it was Q6600018, as Steve noted, but that is shown as a W126 cover in the Mercedes parts list.

My bet is there isn't a car cover specific to the .036 and the stealership will only have general car covers for the W124. Since the W126 is a larger car, the W126 cover will at least fit the .036 without being too tight and will almost cover the entire car. As you can see from my pics, the W126 cover will cover the whole car down to the bottom of the wheels. If there was a cover made with flared fenders in mind, I would have found it and bought it by now.

There was one (Q-660-0025), but it has been NLA (no longer available) for many years. The standard W124 OE cover (Q-660-0016) from the dealership fits very well, it's slightly snug, but completely acceptable IMO. Note that both of these have been superceded to a single newer part number, Q-660-0039.

I've used my Noah car cover outside for a while (not now though, garaged at home and garaged at work but with the cover on) and each time I took the cover off, the car was never dusty or had any moisture left over. Here's the info from the Covercraft site - "The barrier layer is breathable film, a proprietary stretch-film technology developed exclusively for Kimberly-Clark. The film is stretched and subjected to a chemical process that creates microscopic holes smaller than droplets of water or dust, yet large enough to allow moisture vapor to escape." http://www.carcoverusa.com/NOAH-Car-Cover.html

Even after washing the cover and leaving it on the car to dry (the best way to dry a car cover fast), upon removing the cover, no moisture was left over. Even my coworkers are always asking if my car has been repainted since the car looks quite clean each time. With using my car cover, I only wash my car once every 5 to 6 weeks (if there's no rain) and keep my car always covered.

Q-660-0016 is no longer available, even though it may still appear on a current price list. If you place an order for it, you'll receive Q-660-0039. Same with Q-660-0025... although parts.com shows a price, this does not mean it's available.

MBNA has a habit of leaving old, defunct part numbers on their price list for years - not sure why. The only way to determine availability is to call your local dealership and have them look up the part, asking if it's been superceded, and if so, what is the new/current part number. Nothing online will tell you this.

I'd rather have a snug-fitting W124 cover than a loose W126 cover, for a 500E anyway. The #39 cover fits fine, especially if you don't have a funky aftermarket rear wing like my E500 does.

The MB cover i have, which i believe is the factory 036 specific cover has the following numbers in the location Dave shows in his post: OMB66003 over top the no.s 01 92 13. The cover has pockets for the mirrors and the hood star as well as a star embroidered over the grill area and Mercedes-benz embroidered on the back. It is not snug at the fenders. It looks to be made of the 3-layer Kimberly Clark material.

It's not loose at all to be left outside in average weather with moderate winds, its quite snug. For higher winds, the cable to run underneath the car to connect the cover on the sides has always kept the cover on even during quite high winds. Nevertheless, the W126 cover fits just right and drops in deep in the rear to cover a good size of the rear bumper. The elastic band has held up to washing and weather abuse so far without any significant loss in elasticity. I quite like it and like how low it covers my car.

When I got my cover, I did call Covercraft directly and told them what my car was, they immediately told to me what I needed - it's only from the forums that I was informed of the W126 chassis based on the part number I gave.

I have a '3M weathershield' one for when the car used to sit outside, it's for a regular W124 tho and fits really tight over the fenders, but man, for the money, it is great and kept the car completely dry and clean through a whole nasty winter.

I ordered an indoor cover from an UK bsed company for the 500E, i had an stock MB transportcover which isn't realy good, it covers only the top side. The cover i ordered fits very well and tight and looks great. The companys advert was in an british classic car magazin, maybe i still have the old mails lets see, if i cn find it i'll post it here.

Q-660-0016 is no longer available, even though it may still appear on a current price list. If you place an order for it, you'll receive Q-660-0039. Same with Q-660-0025... although parts.com shows a price, this does not mean it's available.

When I ordered the -0016 from parts.com, they emailed me that it is NLA and that -0039 would be substituted.

The deterioration of my -0016 cover is partially due to the tight fit, but I decided to replace it with the similar model because I don't want a loose cover catching any light debris falling from all the trees in my area.

I have both the OEM one and a Weathershield HP one. Have experienced the moisture issue described below. Am thinking maybe I should put BOTH covers on?!? The OEM one is more water resistant than water proof, while the Weathershield simply sheds water. I am actually trying the dual cover approach on my Porsche. I live close to the beach so maybe this issue is unique to the location?

You can get the OE/dealer Noah cover for standard W124 for $250 list, maybe $200 plus shipping from the discount dealers. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it is a snug fit on the E500E, but it does work. See post #14.

I have two Noah covers that I bougth used which seem to have shrunk, I don't know if a previous owner improperly washed/dried them, or if they tend to shrink over time when used outdoors. The one I bought new years ago still fits correctly but I've only used that one indoors.

I've purchased a couple of Empire covers through the Mercedes Club website. I bought one for the 500E and one for the wagon. The wagon cover fits pretty good. The 500E cover is pretty big but for indoor use it is fine.

I have a leftover C6 corvette cover that fits fairly well on my SL.

I have noah covers for couple cars and HP HD covers i am hands down slowly switching to non noah covers. They decompose quickly when outside and trap lots more dirt. I just ordered a coverking autobody armor cover to replace a decomposing noah cover and i got it for pretty close to noah prices with the holiday sales

my noah cover i ordered for 500 fits great and is long and since its not outside i presume it will last longer than the outdoor noah covers but i never saw options for any covers specific to 500 maybe i missed it

one thing noah covers offer is a bit better ding protection etc cuz theyre a bit thicker

I jumped all over Jimbo’s screaming deal on a Weathershield HP a few months ago. The same cover from Griot’s will run close to $400 with shipping.

This cover is impervious to the weather conditions I encounter. I use it while storing the 500E inside the garage during the off-season & especially for the seldom few times the car may be parked outside.

Recently I jockeyed the 500E outside the garage just prior to a snowstorm so I could help fix BMW-guy's latest problem. Crappy weather be damned! Water & snow rolled right off the cover.

The coverage on the 500E is excellent. As shown in Jimbo’s photos, the cover completely wraps around both front & rear bumpers (and well down to the bottom of my 16” rims). Minor caveat...the side mirror pockets are a couple inches longer than they need to be.

I have no trouble solo donning or doffing the cover when following Griot’s recommended procedure.

I've used custom fitted weather-shield covers on my last 2 cars and I have never been disappointed. They're light and easy to pack and unpack. Plus they provide excellent protection for the outdoors.
